Hi there,

Just doin some research for an upcoming trip to the UK and ireland. I think we wanna see a few castles along the way but are pretty sure that some will be great and others not worth bothering with. What I\'m hoping u good people can tell me is based on ur experiences, are there any that are just NOT worth it and any that are a MUST? Any help or guidance would be great...
thank you 😊

Where abouts in the UK and Ireland are you planning to visit. This would narrow it down abit. They are quite big places and there are various castles all over!

I see, I could totally recommend castles in France, but that's a little off your plan! Wish I could be of more help... Reply to this

A month for all four countries? That doesn't seem long, I'm guessing you will be doing a lot of driving and not staying long in any place then? The UK isn't very big, especially if you compare it to the USA, but there is a lot of history to see packed into a very small area.

Some good places for castles then.

1. Northumbria.
Go and see Annwick castle, some of the first Harry Potter films were filmed there. www.alnwickcastle.com/
Banburgh castle is also increadibly situated. www.bamburghcastle.com/
From there you can go over to Holy Island and see Lindesfarne www.lindisfarne.org.uk/

2. Scotland.
Of course, Edinburgh castle is lovely. Dunvegan on Skye is great. Kinloch Castle on Rum is special because you can stay in it cheaply. www.isleofrum.com/kinlochcastle-bu.html
I would recommend driving the road to the Isles, from Fort William up to Mallaig and Oban. Spectacular scenery.

When you say 'castles' are you including stately homes in this as well? There are some great estates all over the UK. Check out www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ and www.english-heritage.org.uk/ www.snh.org.uk/ for inspiration.

There are also some incredible cathedrals in many cities around the UK like York, Liverpool, Winchester, Lincoln.....
