I'm just wondering what all this claiming tax back is all about? Other travellers seem to be claiming their tax back from stopping work in the UK and I wondered if anyone who has done it can tell me how? I'm not working in Oz I just want to claim back what I've paid from Jan - April 09 back home and I also wonder if there is a time limit for claiming it back aswell?
Reply to this Did you work for less than the whole tax year in the UK - i.e. less than April 08 to March 09? They calculate your tax code based on a full year, so you may be entitled to some money back.
There is a form you should have filled in to say that you were leaving the country. You send in your P45 into the tax office with this form and they send you whatever you are owed.
There are companies available who will do it for you, but we didn't need them.
Since it's the end of the tax year now, the tax office MAY send you anything you are owed automatically. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
This is if you have not worked abroad since leaving. If you have then you hit double tax issues, and you may have to pay extra tax on what you have earned since leaving the UK.
Reply to this Hello, No i've not worked since leaving the UK, I didn't fill in the form to say I was leaving the country and i paid tax from april 08 to Jan 09. We will see, hopefully they will do it automatically. Thanks for your advice :-)
Reply to this If not you can apply for it when you get home, or you should get it automatically when you start working in the Uk again.
