Help with Europe travel

Suggestions, ideas, thoughts, for one month travel!
15 years ago, March 11th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #65588
Hi everyone!

My brother and I are going to travel in Europe for a month (I wish I could just quit my job and go for two) and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions as far as countries and locations to visit. We're flying into the UK and want to go around England and Scotland for a bit, then head to the mainland and see France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece (maybe others) Is that realistic? Does anyone have suggestions on places to stay? And what is the travel time between countries (say Paris to Madrid) Thanks for the help!

Hello Samantha 😊

It is realistic, if you dont expect to see everything in each country. You would need to pick and choose which parts interest you most, or choose the most convenient route through the countires you want to visit.

There might be a table on the internet that shows how long a train journey from one point to another would take in Europe. If you are taking long journeys such as Madrid to Paris, it may be an idea to take over night trains to save some time.

That's exactly what I was thinking about the trains, travel and spend the night on the train then spend the days sightseeing etc. We may nix out Portugal purely because of time constraints, and we're having trouble finding an easy route into Greece :/ because there's a bunch of countries in between that require visas to visit. You can take a ferry from the South of Italy. They go from Brindisi as far as I know. Maybe from other places on the east coast of Italy too. Reply to this

You can check out "Blue Star" ferries. I know they leave from Ancona and from Bari. We recently returned from 3 weeks in the region of Puglia (Italy's heel) and it is definitely worth a look see. The Itri valley in the area of Alberobello is really beautiful. Reply to this

London! Its always on my list.

One thing that I like in London is...

Palace Guards.

Just because we dont have ones like them in the Philippines.

Kidding aside. If you go there, just don't forget to ride London Eye. Bring a nice camera. The view will really fascinate you, especially during the night.

Hi Samantha,
I would suggest you decide which countries and places are your focus and spend a little time in them, rather than spending all your time travelling between places. Nothing worse than going to Europe spending 1 day in Paris. Also check out coach tour brochures as these give you a good idea of how long it takes to get from A to B.

I worked in Europe in touring a few years ago, so if you need any ideas, just drop me a line.

Hi Paddo,

I think we've settled on London, Paris, Bern, Rome, Venice (maybe), Austria, Munich, Berlin, and Amsterdam. And the way we've scheduled it out that gives us at least three days or so in each location. Have you any suggestions on what to see in those places? Reply to this

Hi Samantha,

Well how long is a piece of string! here goes some suggestions. Without knowing your interests its pretty difficult to get this right but....

London - All the usual things like Tower of London, Shakespeares dome, london eye plus make time for Camden markets.
Paris - Eiffel tower (right to the top), arc de triomphe, louvre and musee dorsay, St Chapelle and Notre dame, Montmartre and make at least half a day for versailles.
Bern? why. not that much there. Your better off heading to Interlaken and spend a day doing the Jungfrau trip. Unbelieveable. or stay in Lauterbrunnen. not as much accom but really nice valley.
Rome - forum, coluseum, vatican, trevi fountain, catacombs (just outside the city) church of capucin monks (kind of weird but cool), piazza di spagna and my favourite, piazza navona!
Venice - definitely - st marks and doges palace (bridge of sighs), Rialto bridge and markets. Go to one of the outer islands like burano or Torcello for something different. Also, take a day just wandering and see where you end up. you can't get too lost. Stay in the main part of the city, not Mestre if the budget stretches.
Austria? where. From Venice its fairly easy train ride to Vienna, the 2nd most beautiful city in Europe. Imperial vienna and St stephensdom, Prater funpark and Belvedere and Schonbrun palaces. You can do a day trip to salzburg by car, which is also a beautiful town and stop at Melk abbey along the way, just for an hour or so.
Munich - beer halls, Marienplatz, deutches museum, frauenkirche, viktueliennmarket and please visit Dachau, just outside munich. Its not pleasant, but so important everyone sees it.
Berlin - not as much fun as when it was divided but still worth a look. kirfestendam is the hub of the western part of the city. check out the old parts of the wall. brandenburg gate, unterdenlinden (easts version of K'dam). Berlin has a different buzz now the wall has come down.
Amsterdam - Great town. check out Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. Get a bike and ride around town. ANNE FRANK huis and of course the red light area, just for a look.

This is only touching the surface, but you get the idea. Jump onto some of the tourist info sights for each of the cities and you'll get more info. Hope this helps

Paddo

That is certainly a matter of personal taste. Some love to see just the most famous tourist attactions and spend the rest of their time relaxing in restauants, bars and cafes etc, while others want to spend all day every day visiting attractions, museums and going one tours. And there are the sporty types who want to hike etc and lots of other types of people. So pick and choose what you like to do.

Paddo,

Those all sound like great suggestions thanks! I think were chose Bern because we weren't sure what to do, and we wanted to get up to the Matterhorn. So we'll have to work that bit out.

Mel,

Good point. I think though for this time around we wanna hit the hot spots. If I ever get to go again, I'll go for the more back roads route :D Reply to this

As an update, we accidentally left Switzerland off our trip, but it ended up for the better because now we have at least three or four days to spend in each location. We may not get to go everywhere, but we'll get to see more of where we are going, which I like. We've also reserved our hostels. I plan to write a blog (if I have the time) after each place we visit for a review. If not after each place, then at least when I get back :D Also, I plan to make a post with costs/trains/locations/etc. to make planning a trip like this easier for others!

Thanks for everyone's help! Reply to this
