We are looking for travel blogs of fellow caravan travellers doing the trip around "the block" . We are an Australian couple in our 50's and would be interested to hear tips about parks etc. Heading to Sth Australia in the next week. Currently in Deniliquin NSW. Reply to this

Hello,

I have just joined Travelblog and noticed that you are doing a trip around Aust by caravan. We are in our early 40's travelling with 2 children and leave from Melbourne in April. I will be following your blog along the way as we are heading to SA, to the West up to NT and back through the centre. We will be gone for only 6 months. I hope you are enjoying your travels and very interested in where you stay and what caravan parks you stay in. Reply to this

I regularly travel with my caravan and take photos of caravan parks for my website Australia Travel Now. When I first started travelling with my van I had no way of checking whether the caravan park was any good so I decided to set myself the task of photographing as many as I could. I've done a few parks in South Australia and lots in NSW and Queensland which you may find interesting. I'd be glad to get your comments of parks you stay in on your current trip as I plan in a few weeks to head south and to do the Great Ocean Road ... probably the "freezing ocean road" in May/June. Great idea to photograph caravan parks - make sure you show us your photos here! Caravan parks are a great option in Australia (and NZ) especially when travelling with children and even if you don't have a caravan or even a tent. Most caravan parks have cabins you can stay in for as little as one night (although some have a minimum 2 night stay). You can pay surprisingly little in the offseason (basically April to October) for these cabins esp. for the basic ones where you share cooking facilities and bathrooms with the campers. They usually have a pool or a beach, playground, jumping pillows, etc. for children - and of course other children! - which can be exactly what both parents and children need for a couple of hours after being in a car most of the day. The owner/operators of these holiday parks are usually extremely helpful and go out of their way to make sure that you are happy and your questions are answered. The price usually turns out to be less for a family (in the offseason) than at hostels or even the most basic fleabag motel (like 50 or 60 Aussie Bucks), and don't underestimate the ability of these parks to supply some of the children's most memorable moments in Australia!

Anyway John, I got off-topic a bit there because I just had to do some effusing about the holiday park option down under. To address your question - one of the very best holiday parks we stayed at down under was Pelican Shores near Geelong at the east side of the Great Ocean Road. The kids still talk about that one - a year later. In talking to my wife and kids here again, here are the others in our top 5: Racecourse Beach at Bawley Point, NSW; Ballina Lakeside Holiday Park in Ballina, NSW; Airlie Cove Resort at Airlie Beach, QSLD; and Crystal Cascades Holiday Park at Cairns.

Wish we could be with you (do you have room for a family of 4 - we're not very big). Have a great trip and we'll be following your blog...You are going to do a blog aren't you?.... Stay safe and stay free..... Reply to this

I'll check out Pelican Shores following your recommendation. I will also post some photos to my blog. All of the caravan photos from the trip with be on Caravan Park Photos and Reviews and the golf courses I play at Golf in Pictures. Somehow I don't think by 15 foot caravan would be roomy enough for your family ... but thanks for the offer !!! Reply to this

hi, I am from Hong Kong and planning to have a caravan (Kea Camper) trip from Sydney to Melbourne, then to Philip Island and drive along the Great Ocean Road. I travel with my husband and a 7- year-old girl and a 4 -year-old boy as well. We booked the air ticket already. It is end July and the beginning of August. I wonder will it be a good idea to travel on a caravan in winter with 2 kids in the south area of OZ.
Your advice will be much appreciated! Please help! Reply to this

If you travel along the coast the probability of poor weather is slim. If you travel through the mountains though you may get some snow and if you are not experienced driving in snow you may want to avoid those routes... Make sure you fill up your fuel tank regularly as there are stretches of road where stations are few and far between. You don't want to run out of petrol! Generally though I think you'll be fine. Check out the Big 4 caravan parks website - we had great luck with these...

Bill & Sue MacCallum, Thank you so much for your advice. I wonder do I need to bring along four sleeping bag for four of us. I think there should be no blankets in the R.V. Sorry for this silly question cause I am the first-time van campers. I worry it may be not warm enough for my kids to sleep in the R.V. in the cold night in Winter. Do you think would it be better to hire a car and sleep in the Park's cabin? Reply to this

Sleeping bags are a good idea.

We hired a car and slept in the cabins and they were great. Most campgrounds have a wide range of cabins from very basic without bathroom or kitchen, to fully equipped. The basic cabins are very cheap during the offseason. Some of them are closed in the winter I think - make sure you check on the website and you can phone ahead. Many of them charge extra for sheets and blankets - so if you have the space in the car, bringing sleeping bags is a good idea. Small sleeping bags are available for children. I would recommend this option as the amount you will spend in fuel will be enormous with an RV, so I think you will actually spend a lot less if you hire a car and stay in cabins. Just have a good look at the Big 4 website and make sure that the specific campgrounds that you might use are open at that time of year and have cabins in your price range. I think the family membership is $40. There are other campgrounds as well but we found no problems with Big 4.

Is Camper Travel a reliable company? We are going to hire a Maui Spirit 4 to drive from Sydney to Melbourn and then around the Great Ocean Road.
Anyone can give me advice? Thank you so much! Reply to this
