Getting around in Australia

Hi,

I'm planning for my first 10 weeks trip to Australia in the end of Jan. I am from Sg, and with the benefit of Trains and buses and a small city, traveling within Sg is very convenient. I was wondering, how actually will the transport system be in Australia. I will be going to places like sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Btw, I won't be traveling by car since I don't have a license.

If you're just going between major cities, there are buses and trains to get you where you need to go. I travelled by bus in New South Wales (Newcastle to Sydney on Greyhound and between Sydney and Canberra), and I took the train from Sydney to Melbourne. Not the cheapest fares in the world, but not too terrible. You can also fly to a lot of places on Qantas or Virgin Blue (discount airline).

For getting to more remote places, if you aren't driving, you'll probably want to join a tour. There are lots of tour companies in Australia that offer trips to popular wilderness areas.

If you're staying in hostels they should have information about different buses, trains, and tour companies.

Information about trains:

Greyhound Australia (bus company - not the only one, if they don't have your destination look for other companies):

Let me know if you need more info, I travelled to every state and territory while in Australia so I can offer some more specific advice if you're interested. Reply to this

Many people do not realize just how large Australia is. The shortest distance between Melbourne and Adelaide takes about 8 hours to drive, Sydney to Melbourne about 12 hours, Sydney to Brisbane about 14-16 hours, and so on.

Personally, I would fly. I know it can become expensive, but hey why sit on a bus for so long. There are several bus journeys that are good if you get off and stay for a couple of days. Sydney to Brisbane, and Melbourne to Adelaide. but that is about it.
