hey guys, i'm from the UK and i'm planning on going travelling after i finish uni next summer. i've not started planning properly yet as i dont have a clue where to start! i want to go to India and south-east asia, then down to oz, nz and fiji!
would someone be able to give me an idea of how much money i would need to travel across these places for around 9-12 months?
thank you! xx
Reply to this Difficult to say as it depends where you'll spend longest - India and SE Asia are very cheap and Oz and NZ much more expensive. so a very loose estimate I'd say would be between £5,000 and 10,000.
You can get accommodation in India as cheaply as anything from 60p to £4 a night, and £5 or £6 a night in SE Asia (sometimes cheaper if you look); whereas Oz and NZ you'll be paying £10-15 a night for accommodation.
Reply to this hey there.. im from australia, and depending on where you are going, and if ur looking for hostel type accomodation, genrally 50 AUD wil get you a decent non seedy hostel. hotels.. your lookng anything from 150 up!
food, rail tickets, and everything hetre at the moment is quite expensive. just the heads up
Reply to this Keep in mind accommodation is a huge part of your overall, daily running-total budget. You might consider being creative with that by looking into homestays, house swapping, volunteering like WWOOF, or short working stints to make ends meet. I know there is work you can get with your UK passport once you get to Oz.
In the meantime, think of each non-essential purchase in travel terms. Every time you want a latte, another pint, takeaways, etc, translate it into travel terms. You can either have a latte (or a weeks worth of them) now or a tuk-tuk ride through the streets of Mumbai while sipping a cocktail. That new pair of trainers could be a balloon ride, weekend at the beach, etc. Every time you stop yourself and make that choice, put that money you would have spent into a savings account (one you cannot access with your cards). An online savings account may pay better interest than your local bank. Maximize the money you put into the account by making sure you have the best possible interest rate.
Look at sites like
and see for yourself how much money your GBP will buy you in each country, and how that translates into actual goods and services. Also, buy gear carefully. Buy the minimum you will need, not anything you could possibly need. You can always make do later. A good pack, daily footwear, and a weeks worth of clothes are essential as far as quality and comfort. And a camera! Spend the most on those. Anything else is secondary, and there is no need to go crazy. Toiletries can be bought, and left, along the way. Clothes can be bought (and they will have lots of cheap clothes in SEAsia). You will be gone so long, there is no way to pack for that whole trip at the outset, you will likely have changing personal care needs, as well as clothes and gear. Most of that can be left until the situation arises. A good place to buy gear is from Australia, as they tend to have low international shipping rates, and neat stuff. Gear in the UK, I think, is ridiculously expensive. Try here: , , , .
Good luck, it sounds like an awesome trip!! Reply to this A great way to save money on accomodation is to check out a website like couchsurfing. It's basically people offering to let you crash on their couch in exchange for a little culture swapping. Plus it's a great way to see the place as a local. I don't know about SE Asia but I'm sure Australia and NZ has a ton of Couchsurfers. Cheers
