Basically i have a few questions for all those who have done the big trip. Firstly i currently have a partner we had planned this to happen together however i felt that it was something i really wanted to do alone to get space and freedom having been in Her Majestys Service for 10 years. So i have now told her i need to do this alone of which she is finding this very very hard to grasp but hopefully in time will become easier.

I have planned my trip to last around 6 months in total and the following is roughly where i plan to go and time spent there.

Countries plan to stop within are as follows along with time spent in that country.

Vietnam - 3 weeks
Cambodia - 3 weeks
Thailand - 4 weeks (including Phi Phi island)
Australia - 8 weeks (Possibly working however is a working visa required or is it at all possible to work over there escaping the requirement of a working visa??)
Cook Islands - 10 days
LA travelling around the west coast etc - 6 weeks

Total of 25 weeks around 6 months away.

my budget is Flight cost for a 6 possibly 7 stop ticket is around £1200-00 including Taxes.

Budget for spending £5000-00

Is this realistic or not?

And will i meet actually many people during my trip i am slightly worried of being alone and wonder if i have made the right choice choosing this to go solo?

Thank you very very much for any help or advice anybody out there can offer.

Regards Jon.

Hello Jonathan :)

You have an average of 27 pounds per day if I calculate right. This is an above average backpacker budget for Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. However it is on the skimpy side for the other places. I would spend more time in the Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and less in the other places to make the money stretch.
Another thing to take into consideration are the visa and possible departure tax expenses. Departure taxes are sometimes included in flight prices but not always.

You will meet people without a doubt. Lots of them.
You could post in the following forum to search for people to meet up with if you want.

Should I travel solo?

Yeah, explaining why you want to do this alone to you partner is a difficulty that many travellers have. Maybe some who have done it will give you some good tips here.

not sure if you already checked this out or if its even cheaper, but i came across RTW fares for crazy low amounts on oneworld.com and staralliance.com. but anyways your budget looks fine, especially since youre spending pounds. they will get you far in se asia and in the US too.

i've never done this, but i always speculated that using couchsurfing.com or whatever for sleeping arrangements would be a good way to cure loneliness while traveling. my rationale: if you're staying with someone who lives in the city they'll show you around and invite you out with their friends or something. maybe thats just wishful thinking.

hostels are great for meeting people, but not guaranteed. if you're going to san diego while on the west coast, try staying at the ocean beach international or the banana bungalow in mission beach. i've never stayed in either one, but i used to live in san diego and they are located in cool areas within walking distance to the beach.

I highly suggest Couch surfing to avoid being lonely. It's a great community to meet locals in almost any major destination and the people I have met have been awesome!
I've travelled alone before and I found that as a foreigner it's actually a lot easier to meet people, esp in Asia because they normally go out of thier way to accomodate you. Plus, if you are out going you are bound to meet heaps of people along the way.. it's the absolute best part of travelling, all the friendships that will change your life.
