So we are now in Cuidad Bolivar. It was another long day of travelling, but we finally got here about 6pm after leaving Margarita Island at 8am. Our Posada(hostel), Don Carlos is a lovely old building. There were´t many rooms left so we are all sharing one big room. Mandy & I are downstairs and the boys upstairs. Apparently Chris´s snoring hasn´t been too bad, Miles has reported. We´ve spent the last few days looking around the town, having breakfast next to the River Rio Orinoco. We have booked our trip to Angel Falls and leave tomorrow at 7.30am. It is a 3 day - 2 night trip, where we will spend both of the two nights at different camps sleeping in hammocks. Can´t wait - very excited!! To pay for the trip we had to ... read more

The second leg of the Dragoman tour started in Manaus. Only 7 of us this time. We had a 2 day drive to reach Venezuela and the landscape on the way was stunning with very pretty green farmland and lush forest. We saw macaws and lots of parrots. Our night stop was at the equator, a scrubby, grubby patch of dirt with a bizarre marker, a rock with a funny hockey stick through it. It was a nice evening, the sounds of the parrots in the forest replaced by the sounds of the frogs. One of the young girls got spooked by lights in the forest but she got really excited when I told her they were fireflies. We had a hot night in our tents. When we got up at 4 am to depart we ... read more

We woke up at 6 today with an entire bottle of rum still sloshing around our insides...last night we decided that the mild beer around wasnt good enough....we also discovered that the place we were staying at (Posada La Casita) would allow us to transfer them money online at the unofficial exchagne rate for a tour to see angel falls... but then the guy was being a real idiot since he was drunk and couldnt add up properly so we ended up getting into a bit of an argument..the other people at the place were nice though, and we played loads of pool...and then went swimming at midnight i defnitely would not reccomend arguing with the guys who run it (Daniel)...freaky guy... also met a journalist dude who works in caracas, and it was interesting to ... read more

We spent yesterday travelling to Ciudad Bolivar and are now staying at Posada La Casita...the first really really nice place weve stayed at...were sleeping in bunk'beds in a little hut (decided against hammocks) since getting a proper room is 80000 bolivares versus 18000 for a bunk bed.. the place has a pool table, a pool and everything...we played a few racks of pool last night, and then got told that a trip to see the orinocco delta and angel falls would cost 980000 bolivars...stunned....thats about 500 dollars the official exchange rate, wayyyy out of our budget.. so now were in ciudad bolivar trying to find some tour agency that will do us a trip to angel falls, the highest waterfall in the world which is over a kilometre in length, for really cheap...its a long shot, ... read more

On the 7th we caught a coach from Caracas down to Cuidad Bolivar wgçhere we were staying at a posada and catching our tour to Canima and the Angle Falls from. After the 8 hour bus journey we arrived in Cuidad Bolivar, a much smaller and poor city than Caracas. We were met at the bus terminal by Peter, the owner of the posada and Gekko Tours. He was a German who had moved her to open a tour comapany and was maybe once of the funniest people we have evr met. He wa quite a heavy drinker and durring the 10 minute rie to his posada he had to stop and buy three cans, and then proceed to down them while go at 60 mph along the main road! After a night at the posada ... read more

Hey everyone. I apologize for the serious delay in updating my blog... it´s been a crazy last few weeks and I really haven´t had much time to access the computer! I have so much to add, but really can´t do it all now. I´m currently living in a 32 child orphanage in Naguanagua, Venezuela (a suburb of Valencia, Venezuela). I sleep in the same room as the 11 kids between 1month old and 4 years old. It´s a very interesting experience and needless to say, I´m not getting much sleep! I´ll write a blog shortly filling everyone in on how great this place is... and how much poop I´ve been dealing with! Last Thrusday I left the beautiful beach that I had spent almost a month searching for. After all that I burned the crap outta ... read more

Hello all, I am curretly in Ciudad (city) Bolivar, Venezuala. Bolivar is the gateway to Angel Falls, which is the highest waterfall in the world at 979 meters, 807 of which are uniterrupted (16 times higher than Niagara in case you were wondering). But alas, these details are better left for my next entry (as I have not yet embarked on the three day journey to see the falls). Well, my last entry left me off in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After splitting up so I could go home and become a man, Bryce and I managed to meet up at a hostel in Ipanema, a district in Rio (anybody know the Frank Sinatra song, "The Girl from Ipanema"?). After traveling for almost 30 hours from Canada and arriving at the hostel at 8pm, Bryce already ... read more

Warning, this bit is boring, so skip to Merida section.. I took night bus from Manaus (Brazil) to Boa Vista (about 12 hrs). Then another bus to the border town of Santa Helena in Venezuela (about 3 hrs). After having been told that tour to Angel Falls were cheaper in Santa Helena, I discovered that they were better taken from the town of Ciudad Bolivar. So same day I took another night bus to Ciudad Bolivar. This was organised by a guy from one of the tour operators. He organised for their rep in Ciudad Bolivar to meet me and a couple of others at the bus terminal, take us to their posada and from there we could take a trip. I didn´t feel up to a 3 day tour, as just came out of the ... read more

From our campsite in Boa Vista we drove to the border and crossed into Venezuela via Santa Elena de Uairen, a small frontier town, that is also where we got our entry stamp, i think we have to bribe some people so we got delayed a bit, from there we drove to the Gran Sabana where the view is just spectacular, we stopped by a waterfall which was crap cause it hasnt rained for awhile, then off to Ciudad Bolivar to camp. It is so hot here, seems like nothing to do at all, good thing our camp had a swimming pool. From here we organized our 3 days trip to Canaima where we will see Angel Falls. We flew on a small plane and the pilot was really cool and made this maneuvers to let ... read more
