i just saw my first cockroach! wow! anyway, i´ve got lots to update, so i best get started. i bought another watch, so after having no watch for a long time, now i have two. good work john, good work. the flight was loooooooong, but i did get a pretty awesome view of the moon on the flight from london to madrid. that was cool, i took a photo, but its pretty bad. i also bought a new book at the airport, which is all about the planets and the solar system, so i suppose i shall continue to be as exciting as ever when i return. made the connection to caracas, got on that plane, and felt my heart sink when the pilot said it would take 8 hours. 8 hours! 8?! EIGHT! thats a ... read more

The shouts of several dozens of fishermen woke me up and threw me right back into reality. A reality that I must admit was for once very pleasant - despite the fact that my sleeping bag was full to the limit with sand. Close by I could hear the waves hitting the shore and as I opened my eyes I could see the pink sun rising in the east. A flashback from the night before reminded me of rum, dancing to african drums, midnight swims and stars so clear I remeber thinking I must be dreaming. The weekend trip to Chuao (a thirty minute boat ride from Puerto Colombia in the north) was a huge success and together with some of my newly found friends I enjoyed total relaxation on the beach as well as hiking ... read more

We're here, we made it - overland from Buenos Aires to Caracas in 4 months, more or less on or following the world's largest mountain range. When we've been sat waiting for hours at bus terminals we devised a way to amuse ourselves and here are the results... We have: * Visited 8 countries * Been to the world's driest dessert * Been to the world's largest and highest salt flats * Visited one of the seven wonders of the world * Crossed the equator (stood on it, hopped over it, straddled it) * Been from zero meters above sea level to 5,012m above * Endured temperatures ranging from -15C to +32C * Been 9 weeks without a single drop of rain * Not been sick on a single bus (although its got close a few ... read more

We said goodbye to the Andes via a 2 hour true winding mountain road through spectacular scenery - huge steep mountains dropping down into a deep gorge. With every metre we descended the temperature rose until eventually we were in hot, dry Barinas. We did the rounds of bus companies for the last time, looking for ones that go overnight to Caracas and secured our tickets for our last South American bus. With over 12 hours to kill we found somewhere to dump off our big rucksacks and caught a local bus into the town centre where we spent the rest of the working day in banks trying (unsuccessfully) to get some money before we ran out completely. We returned to the bus terminal pretty frustrated, particularly after trying to buy some food on Visa, when ... read more

It´s funny how life tends to work out. Of course in order for life to¨work out¨life usually had to have thrown you a few curveballs...and probably beaned you with one or two of them... But since I´ve resolved to be the glass half full type this morning, I´ll focus on the good stuff - namely that I have finally embarked on an escursion. SO! sans sense and sensibility - and the major working of a plan - i find myself in Venezuela. I wish I could say that I am well prepared and have planned this to the hilt, but that just ain´t me. As it stands, all I´ve got is a backpack, two cameras and a lonely planet guide that has already gotten on my bad side (me and lonely planet are beefin´right now...) And ... read more

Here I am in Caracas- finding it horrendously expensive even though I´m not paying for accommodation. Should be leaving fairly soon. I´ve been having a great time and have been accompanied most of the time by various hospitality club and couchsurfing members, so that´s been great fun. I´ve tasted the national beer, Polar, and I can safely say it´s far nicer than Brazilian beer, ha ha... I´ve already been hauled in by the police and had to wipe lots of photos from my camera because I was apparently in a restricted zone. On Monday night David met me at the airport and went with me in a taxi to Luis´s house. The airport is 26kms away from Caracas and Luis lives in the South West so a bit further still to go... I stayed with Luis ... read more

Arrived in Caracas yesterday afternoon and was almost instantanously overjoyed by the ensuing heat. My plane journey was anything but uneventful! Firstly when I arrived at the airport I checked in and the lady behind the desk said something about tax, I thought oh great more expense, but I went into a side office and they gave me 60,000 pesos (just under 20 pounds), confused but a good start. Most of the plane was filled up with the crew of Pop Idol Latin America, I was sat next to two of the camera men, one was a hottie!! They were all very loud and excitable, the hottie next to me kept listening to his ipod and dancing (and playing pretend drums, oh yeah!). I also met a very interested French man in the airport. He was ... read more

So, the next leg of the journey begins, bright and early with a departure from Rio and a sad goodbye to Matt, with several fresh faces on the truck, which itself is different along with our new driver, Euan and our tour guide Mark. Newbies include a couple of Aussie couples (Matt & Sonya, Dean & Jana), another Aussie , Andy, 3 dudes from Hong Kong (Chung, Yiu and Jonny), Doug (Laandoner), Tracy (Geordie, lives in NZ), Heather (Canadian), Nathan (another southerner) and Jenni (Finnish but lives in Canada). En route we were briefed on the running of our new truck, Magaly, who is bigger and more modern than Jack with better locker organisation (Jazz and I retained our priviledged positions as truck packers, meaning no cooking required), although the seats are smaller and she rocks ... read more
