this is just to let everyone know I made it to venezuela alive. Even made it a few days in the capital. That was fun, and I´ll write about my adventures there later. I remember before I started my trip, one of my friends said, ¨You´ll never make it thru central america man, you can´t go to venezuela now.¨ Well, first of all, venezuela isn´t in central america, and second of all, I went there anyway! Who cares where you´re suppossed to go? You just go where you want in life, that´s my new philosophy. Anyway, one really funny thing I´ve got to write down is, last night I went to the music university, and got into a chorus class. This one kid was wearing a long sleeve button shirt, and underneath he had a t ... read more

Hey Everyone, We arrived in the town of Merida, Venezuela on Friday February 8th. During the previous 24 hrs of traveling we had: one bus breakdown, 8 military check stops and a scenic detour though the slums of Venezuela´s second largest city (still can´t figure out why). The check stops were surprisingly easy for us although one elderly lady on the bus was bribing every officer as she had no ID. One glance at the cover of our Canadain passport was all they needed for us! A highlight was acending the Teleferico cable car in Merida. It is the worlds longest (7.76 miles) and highest (15,622 ft). We definetly felt the effects of high alitude. We staggered over to a statue of Simon Bolivar(the founder of independance for VZ) and found it weird to hike a ... read more

Day 4-5 The main attraction of Merida is the world´s largest Telecabin, is 7 km long and gains an elevation of 15 k feet. After the telecabin was completed in 1958 the village was asked to start hosting tourists to boost tourism. Packed up my back pack for a two day trip to a mountain village called Los Nevados with only two small bottles of water for the 6 hour trek. One can take guided tours which is hardly necessary, as in this case the trails are well delineated and travelled. Took the Telecabin to 15 foot which lies next to mount Bolivar the highest peak of the Andes in the Venezuela. Then took the cabin back down one station. A small horse trail leads the way to the village, but first had to cross short ... read more

Merida Day 2. Paragliding ia a popular activity here, and lots of travel or tourist shops sell half a day packages. At cost of 60 dollar you can experience flight at 3 thousand feet elevation. However do not recommend it with a hangover, and if you try it, you must be willing to be completely terrified in the first five minutes. THe trip includes a 1 hour trip in a jeep to the launching area, a hill at 3 thousand feet near merida. The view overlooks the surrounding farms and small villages and adjascent mountains. Shared the trip with a freindly Dutch couple trvelling in Venezulea. ... read more

Day 8 Merida: Flight from Caracas airport was easily arranged and for 90 dollars. Took the next flight over the mountains in Western Venezuela to the city on the foot the Andes. Merida was a remarkably refreshing change from Los Roques. It is green, surrounded by lush mountains on all sides. The temperature is in the low 20´s Celsius like the summers of Seattle. The people are very friendly and less wound up than the big city (Carracass). In the airport met a German Botanist, named Alexander who had spent 6 years in Merida and was visiting for vacation. Got a ride to town from his friend in a small bug, and shared the back seat with his three year old son named Simon. The place is filled with European and some North American tourists. There ... read more

Hola Amigos, We are currently in the Andes town of Merida, where we will be spending New Years Eve. We met up with our group in caracs last Saturday and left with our group to the beach town of Santa Fe. We have 36 in our group that will travel with us to Rio. Most are friendly, but of course there are some 4 who are miserable and difficult. We have been split in to groups and we have to make dinner, lunch, or help clean so it is like living in a commune. There are four in our group and Louise and Gary are already fighting over who is chopping and who is cooking after they saw the size of the wok they can use. We could cook a small child in it, or dog. ... read more

As you probably know, the Venezuelan elections are next Monday, December 3rd. Hugo Chavez, the current president is fighting to get elected for the 3rd time... to go for a record stretch of 12 years of ´elected´presidency. The Venezuelan constitution maaay have been altered a little bit (by the HC himself) to allow this to happen, but to his supporters, this is just a little bump in the road, nothing serious. There are 3 types of people I´ve met in regards to how they plan on tackling this election... Tipo#1:The Chavez Supporter This person is usually of a poorer background. He/She sees Chavez as the leader of the Revolución contra el Capitalismo- the Revolution against Capitalism that started 8 years ago when Chavez was first elected. Now, if you ask his supporters, they´d never call themselves ... read more

So I decided to spend a little more than my budget allowed and I went on a tour of Los Llanos (the plains of Venezuela, only 40m above sea level, extremely flat - some were reminded of Africa, or the Australian Outback - and absolutely teaming with wildilfe!). Here is a brief, or not so brief, recount of the crazy time we had... Day 1: Left the posada at 9am, were told we had to drive for ´a little while´to get to the camp. You know, that´s the interesting thing about this country, EVERYONE lies about the time!! It was about 9 1/2 hours driving to get to the campamiento where we were staying. I wont lie though, the drive was fabulous. The diversity in this county is astonishing. Starting in Mérida we were in the ... read more
