The day I arrived into Peru was the same day my cat died. I had been told a few days previous that she was believed to have cancer. After further tests she was found to have a tumor the size of a tennis ball in her abdomen and as such was put down. Back in Peru, Katie and I had just arrived in the surfer town of Mancora when we got the news. We walked to the beach to say a goodbye to Wacky, now my second cat to die of cancer. We looked out over the water as the sun was setting, roughly marking Australia’s direction, and watched as silhouetted pelicans nose dived into the red and pink reflected water, in search of food. It was a sad start to our time in Peru ... read more

again for more photos see Katie´s flickr page www.flickr.com/photos/katierob The difference between Colombia and Ecuador for two neighbouring countries, who share quite a common history, is stark. Colombia for all its fincas and coffee plantations really remains quite urban with localized regions of high population and vast areas of mountains, valleys and rivers with not more than a few scattered houses about the place. Ecuador in contrast seemed to optimise the word rural with all but the very largest cities still largely revolving around their respective weekly markets. But although it was much less developed than Colombia it really seemed that every inch of the country as populated and cultivated. So even though it has a proliferation of volcanoes and mountains over 4000 -5000m they appeared gentle and tame (or... read more

For more photos including some of actual people check out Katie´s flickr site: KatiesPhotos Colombia has always been something of an enigma to me. Growing up I believed, as I’m sure most you did too, that it was an inherently dangerous place, like it was usually portrayed within the media or by popular culture. In researching the country before I came I even found one red neck American website, that ranked Colombia equal with Iraq as place you are most likely to die while on holiday. But traveling through Central America a few years ago I meet a lot of people who had just come from there and I started to hear an incredibly different view. One of gorgeous lush landscapes, friendly and beautiful people and a vibrant, proud culture. It was a place that ... read more

Arriving in Rio after the quiet, tranquil beauty of Patagonia was something of a shock to the system. This once pristine Atlantic rainforest is now an ever expanding urban sprawl rapidly consuming all remaining coves, beachfront, foreshores and hillsides. Although I was well aware of many of the problems facing Rio, though, I did not expect it to be quite as rundown and decreipt as it was. Almost reminicent of present day Havana after its 48 year trade embargo. But at the same time the whole place was just so full of life and energy which give it this very rough and raw feeling and excited you as much as scared you. One thing is for sure though Rio is a very charismatic town. On my first day I decided to do a tour of one ... read more

After finishing my 4 day spanish course in Buenos Aires, taking the class has been one of the best decisions I have made so far, and buying a copy of Harry Porter and the Philosphers Stone in spanish I quickly hopped a plane down to Patagonia, more specially El Calafate, I place I have dreamt about going ever since I first found out it existed! The town of Calafate itself though is a strange little place completely void of culture or history. This is not to say however that people have not been living in this region for centuries just that the town appears to have been built from scratch within the last 10-15 year, purely to serve as a tourist jumping off point to the Petiro Moreno Glacier. As one of the girls in the ... read more

January 31st 2007

3 days after arriving in Buenos Aires my gorgeous girlfriend Katie, apparently with a better offer, left for Mexico. The previous days had been spent easing into BA and enjoying the cheap luxuries available. We checked out a few of the different Barrios (neighbourhoods), San Telmo the ¨tango¨ district with its its cobbled streets and tango bars, El Centro which could be easily mistaken for a dozen different European cities and Recoleta, the home of the rich and the final resting place of the Eva ¨Evita¨ Peron, but mostly we just relaxed enjoying the remaining time we had together. It had suprised me (quite pleasently of course) exactly how effortlessly we had travelled together. On the way back from the airport after saying goodbye I realised I would seriously need to readjust to travelling alone, even ... read more
