Alt i alt, alle ... read more

I started day 9 in Cusco, leaving the beautiful Hotel Monasterio early to arrive at the train station in time to board the Andean Explorer train for a ten hour journey to Puno along the shores of Lake Titicaca. The train is built in the 1920's style and comfortably furnished with high-back chairs and large windows for viewing the impressive Andean scenery. There is an observation car in the back to truly reveal the tall mountains, rivers and farmland. The train made a short stop at remote Andean outpost at 14,173 feet elevation. We had a three course lunch on the train served at our tables by a very efficient crew. The train ride was for about 220 miles to get to Puno, a city of 100,000 at an elevation of 12,500 feet. It was dark ... read more

We opted to take the Inca Express from Cusco to Puno thinking it’d be nice to have a comfy bus and a lunch stop along the way. I probably should have read a little bit more of the information on the website before choosing this option as we soon realised after we’d settled into our comfy seats that we’d inadvertently ended up on a tourist bus complete with 5 stops along the way and a ‘guide’ who tested the microphone every single time he used it by saying “holahola *clears throat* amigos”. 10 hours and a whole lot of conveniently located souvenir shops later we made it to Puno which is situated on the eastern edge of Lake Titicaca at an elevation of about 3900m above sea level. We’d pre-arranged to have a home cooked meal ... read more

“Travel is flight and pursuit in equal parts” Another early morning start, breakfast at 6am, than off for the day boating around Lake Titicaca. What a wonderfully relaxing holiday we are having! The hours turn into days and the days turn into weeks. I don’t know what day or date it is, my only connection with time is the watch on Sue’s wrist. I think we are still in Peru but I don’t really care. Am writing this on a bus heading for Bolivia and am having the time of my life. The boat leaves from Puno harbor where the water is very shallow and this is where the famous reed islands are. The locals build floating islands to live on and everything else necessary for existence; houses, boats, beds etc. What a life! We stop ... read more

Dragging ourselves out of bed we head for the train station. Instead of staying in Cusco to recover from the fatigue of our trek we have decided to go up market and ride one of the great train journeys of the world - Cusco to Puno. The cost is $150 per person, but what the hell, we need some pampering after the Inca trail. I have booked the tickets online and have printed them out so no mistake can be made but on presentation to the conductor he informs us that the tickets are for reverse travel - from Puno to Cusco and to make matters worse this leg of the journey is another $100. He whisks us off to the ticket office to see what can be done. The ticket officer informs us that seats ... read more

17 Aug Day 5: Lake Titicaca Puno The end of a couple of busy days. We had a minor disappointment yesterday. When our itinerary said we were sleeping on an island, because of the way it was written we assumed (didn't read it closely enough) that we would be on the Uros floating islands. WRONG. We ended up on a solid earth island. It was still good though as we got to walk up to the two top peaks of the island ending up at around 4,150 meters. Its just a shame that the lintels weren't so high. We just about had to kneel down to get through the door of the room the boys were in. BUT we had the mirror - Maryalina and Liz didn't - nah nah nah nah nah. The score was ... read more

16th of August Day 4: Chivay to Colca Canyon to Puno Well here we are in Puno after a very long day. We started the day Chivay in the Colca Valley. After a 6:00 am our guide and driver took us to the 'Cruz del Condor', a natural viewpoint opposite the nesting-sites of the famous Andean Condors. We arrive in time to see these majestic birds launch themselves into the Canyon as they set out on their day's hunt. Both the birds and the canyon are spectacular. At this location the canyon is 1,200 metres deep. I got a couple of shots of the Condors but nothing like what Don got so I will down load his pictures and load them to the blog when I can. After spending more time in the Canyon, we returned ... read more

Hola hola! So after an overnight bus journey from Cusco, we arrived in Puno in the early hours of the day. We nearly got onto the wrong bus as we were trying to pick a bus that most appealed to us! However, in the end we were directed to the right one. To be honest, the bus ride was pretty comfortable with the seats reclining to almost 180 degrees and the heating on. We met our tour guide, Moses, and the rest of our group, and got onto a boat to the Uros islands on Lake Titicaca. Moses was quite the comical tour guide with lots of random facts and figures! Eg lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, meaning the highest lake a boat can sail on. It's 3400m above sea level, ... read more
