Woke up and all the laundry we washed in the bathtub was dry -- yeah! We had a traditional breakfast buffet and the best part was the great views of Lake Titicaca and the hillside above Puno. And, there were several llamas and alpacas grazing on the lawn. The views were almost as good as the lit hillsides the night before at dinner. Ruben picked us up and took us to the launch area and we bought water for ourselves and chocolate and rice for our hosts on the island of Amantani. The boat had a capacity of 25 and we ended up with 20 passengers. There was a seating area on the roof and in the stern that could accommodate six at one time. Our first leg was about 30 minutes to the floating reed ... read more

Freddy met us at the hotel and we had a cup of coffee together as we discussed the rest of our trip. He said he would be "following" us until we got to Iquitos. He took us to our tourist bus and we left Cusco behind. Our tour guide, Coco, spent the first 30 minutes telling us about what we would see and then would break-in along the way adding tidbits as we passed villages or landmarks. This would be a 9-1/2 hour luxury bus with five scheduled stops. A short distance from Cusco, we passed through the small town of Chuta, famous for its one-foot round loaves of bread. Tanya, our hostess, gave all of us a sample which was slightly sweet and very good. There were many women selling these along the roadside. Our ... read more

Hello followers! How's it all going in the sunburnt country these days? Sorry that it has taken a while for me to bring you all up to date. Very hard to catch up a week when everything is still busy. Really want to thank you for reading my blogs too :)! It is great to see the stats and know that I won't have to repeat myself a 100 times when I get home LOL! But seriously, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you are on this journey with me - from kids, to relatives, friends, teamies, workmates & I guess the occasional boss too! So let's get down to the business of telling you all about the Puno region. Ummm... Puno the city itself is nothing really amazing. It has a slightly ... read more

5-7 May 2014 Monday through Wednesday. We were again faced with another early start of a day...5:40 am with a rendezvous with the luxury bus that would he take us to Puno on Lake Titicaca departing at 7:20 am. Our tour agent used Wonder bus, a competitor to the Inca Express. We would have five stops along the way, arriving in Puno about 5 pm. The first was the town of Andahuaylillas where the interior of the 17th century church is compared to the Sistine Chapel, with paintings of the Last Judgement and extensive wall decorations. While interesting and different, I've seen the Sistine Chapel and this is no Sistine Chapel. Next we stopped in Raqchi at the Inca ruins known as the Temple of God Wiracocha, who was the supreme god. This city was on ... read more

Geo: -15.84, -70.05The next few days would see us visiting the highest navigable lake in the world. In addition to making teenage boys (and Bonnie D) giggle like small girls, Lake Titicaca sits at 11,463 feet altitude and straddles the border between Peru and Bolivia- the Andean peoples refer to the lake as The Sacred Lake and legends say that the first Inca rose from its depths and went out to found the Inca Empire. Not to pop Bonnie's balloon, but the best story for how the lake got it's name would suggest that it's because of it's shape- the word Titicaca comes from the Quechua and Aymara languages; Titi means puma, and caca means rock, and from a certain height (and with a cheek-full of cocoa leaves), it sort of looks like a puma chasing ... read more

Days 56 -57 we had a fun start to the day when our group left our hotel in a convoy of 2 man peddle powered cyclos for a quick trip down to the port for our tour of Lake Titicaca. We were joined by our guide, John, who is an expert in the history & culture for these regional communities. We started out by slow motor boat in dead calm & warm conditions although the water temperature is a constant cold 9-10 deg. After a short cruise our first stop off was to visit the Uros floating islands. The Uros natives originally moved north to Puno thousands of years ago & were happily settled there until the Spanish arrived & who needed a constant supply of slave labour to mine the rich lodes of silver that ... read more

Day 55. We farewelled Cuzco with fond memories with a mini van trip to the bus station for a 7 hrs trip by local bus firstly back-tracking to Juliaca before heading further into the highlands and Puno. The high altiplano scenery to Puno was dramatic. Not such a comfortable bus as it's not a regular route & along the way Ruth had her first onboard toilet experience & while able to borrow a head-torch & toilet paper a nose peg was unable to be found. Puno is located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, and is a melting pot of Aymara and Quechuan Indian culture. Traditional Andean customs are still strongly represented here & is the reason why we will be doing a home stay here with a traditional Indian family. Lake Titicaca is the highest ... read more

27 February 2014 Thursday - Puno, Peru We did not expect much of Puno as the guidebooks and internet sites didn’t have much good to say about it, probably because it doesn’t have a clutch of magnificent Spanish colonial Catholic Churches or a bunch of museums or fabulous squares. We were, however, pleasantly surprised on our initial walkabout. One of the criteria we use to make an initial assessment of a town or city is if there are more interesting-looking restaurants than we will have the time to visit during our stay there. Accordingly, Puno looks very promising and under-rated by the travel guides. We had finally arrived at around 2am. We had met a young Belgian couple, Heyvaert and Bernard, who were also on a long-term Latin American journey, while waiting to board the bus ... read more

With 1:30pm bus tickets purchased to get us from Copacobanna to Puno, it wasn't long before we soon realised things weren't right. As we turned up to get on our bus, there were no Puno bound busses. Confused, we asked around and eventually were told that all busses to Puno had been cancelled due to local strikes...great (not)! Furnished with the option of catching a bus for one hour, walking through the strike area with our bags for three hours, then catching another bus the other side for another two hours, or waiting until 6pm for a direct bus with no stops, it seemed like a no brainier. 6pm arrived and the same chaos ensued; once again we were faced with the same prospect. We decided to bite the bullet, get on the bus and face ... read more

- Tror nok lige at arbejdstilsynet kunne få travlt her i Peru. Det ... read more
