When we arrived in Peru after flying from Panama City, we landed in Lima. Here we spent about three or four days (our minds have become a bit hazy now!). To be honest, Lima wasn´t our favourite place! Luckily we were staying in a district called Miraflores, which is just outside of the city centre. We say lucky as we felt pretty unsafe when we were in the centre! Lima is a huge, busy and noisy city, and although the centre does have some impressive architecture, on the whole it is pretty ugly and there is so much pollution that there is a constant smog cloud over the entire city. A city without sunshine, no less. Besides losing our tans, the change in temperature from Panama to Peru was a bit of a shock to the ... read more

Well shit, what to say... First off we cant believe its over already, seems like we just got here...needless to say this place is absolutely fuckin amazing...every thing we did and everything we saw was completely different from the last...i think it was the absolute diversity of things that made the trip so amazing, diversity of beautiful landscapes, warm people, a totally different feeling in every country we traveled to... There are however definate highlights that can not be forgotten...firsty, we loved bolivia...we spent a whole month there and went from living in the jungle in the Amazon River Basin, to travelling in a 4x4 for four days through the retardedly cold altiplano and saltfields, to the psycho crazy city of La Paz, to horse back riding where butch Cassidy and that other guy got ... read more

Karolina, my travelling companion, took a flight back home on Monday 23rd July. It is the end of her journey, end of her holidays. I will truly miss her.................................... We spent the last three days in Lima, staying in a hostel in Miraflores. Far away from central Lima but much much safer. Again (i don´t know whether we have been so lucky or whether people in Sth America have fiestas that often) we happened to be there on a day when there was a celebration, pre- independence day that will be held on 28 and 29 this month. We watched a great parade on the streets of Miraflores, in the evening wonderful fireworks. One day, with some people from the hostel, we went out to a recommended seafood restauant to try a Peruvian speciality: ceviche - ... read more

After being awoken by the noisy parrots, we had a quick breakfast. We decided to stick to an easy choice due to the slow service! We took a couple of dodgy taxis to the town centre - which had seen better days! Then we caught the bus around 10am, to depart to Lima. A fairly efficient ride, only four and half hours, with views of sand dunes radiating out to the lovely sea views as we neared Lima. We even got some dvds on-board, not our favourite choice though, however in English! Then we took some speedy slightly worn-out taxis with cracked windows to the Miraflores area. The city is very cosmopolitan, with a modern shopping mall overlooking the seafront with some designer shops, and lots of tower blocks. Many vultures and para gliders sweeping the ... read more

Everything up until now had ben no more than a holiday really, and the proper travelling began in style with an emergency dash on Monday morning to the British Consulate in LA to replace my missing passport, just in time in to catch our plane to Lima. The flight was a bit of a nightmare, delayed 3 hours, but not until we'd actually boarded, meaning we were stuck in our seats for nearly 12 hours. The delay also meant we wouldn't arrive in Lima till 3am. Lima isn't supposed to be the safest of cities, so I had organised our airport pick up advance, and we were a bit worried that he wouldn't wait around till then, leaving us stranded. But no, we got off, and there was our guy waving a placard for Amanda ... read more

Lima- Miraflores We arrived exhausted in Lima, still half jetlagged and half due to an early flight so our first day was spent sleeping mostly! We stayed in a suburb of lima called Miraflores as it is safer and there is a beach. The beach is pretty useless as the sun rarely comes out of the clouds!!its nice along the front though. Lima itself is huge , polluted and dangerous at night. Miraflores is quite touristy with lots of cafes restaurants and shops so it was good. We were there when Macchu Picchu was named one of the new 7 wonders so there were lots of celebrations and fireworks. The peruvians seem really friendly which is good, they love to eat guinea pigs though which is disgusting, its the most expensive item on all the ... read more

Hi everyone, one last entry before we head east into the jungle. We are rested after a few days in Lima (although we switched hotels after discovering that the first one could only manage tepid water for a shower) The new hotel is very plush so we´ve been relaxing, eating, and souvenier shopping and generally getting ourselves ready to head into monkey, tarantula and pirahna country. The souvineir markets are massive and it´s quite an exhausing task (seriously!!!!!) We have bought lots of boxes of colour pencils and little notepads to give the children in villages we visit (on the recommendation of our tour guide as the communities prefer not to have us handing out money or lollies, and pencils are expensive here) We found a plaza full of pizza restaurants last night, but the competition ... read more

Our final day in Peru. We did some final shopping - rather more Ollie causing damage to my credit card by buying three Quiksilver shirts and a Nike tracksuit, (he wanted two!) We met Vaughan for lunch at a restaurant we liked from two weeks previous and then met up with Sarah and Joe for a final farewell prior to getting our taxi to the airport. We all exchanged email addresses and agreed to meet up in the future? I guess that Ollie has now blagged free holidays in Auckland, San Francisco and Vancouver! We made some great friends on this trip, but we were both looking forward to leaving for home! Check-in for our return flight KLM 744 was smooth and we took off almost on time. It's been a great holiday and Ollie has ... read more

hi everyone, well hopefully Í´ll be able to attach some photos today. The photos take a while to load, so there are only a few. just a taste of our first ten days. So far it´s been a wonderful experience overall. We have settled into a hotel in Miraflores, Lima for the next few days, and will get practical things done like laundry and emails, before we head for the Amazon on 15 july. Everything we have been wearing is dirty and dusty from the Inca trail. Machu Picchu was stunning, nestled in the valley with mountains towering on every side. We have had some hair-raising bus rides along single lane dirt tracks up mountains, but it´s all part of the adventure. We were quite sad to part from the friends we had made on ... read more
