Day 116-118 It has now been 4 months since we left cold England and although it has been a great adventure the first signs of travel fatigue are starting to set in. At the mere thought of simple things like baked beans and roast dinners we find ourselves salivating. Anyway it is time for a new country and we have high expectations for Peru. After an expensive flight to Lima we decide a private room is a luxury we cannot afford so we opt for a 6 bed dorm, luckily for the first night we are the only ones in it, so after a quick wander around the middle class area of Miraflores we settle in for the night. The next morning we decide to head to the old town for some sightseeing, which apparently is ... read more

Having not been out of my normal routine for some time I was more than excited to be striking out on a 2 week adventure to Peru. Equipped with my very basic high school Spanish (rubbish really!), a few tour books, an adventuresome travel companion and a return ticket from Cusco-we flew to Lima. Peru is a country I knew shockingly little about so off we went to educate ourselves. Upon arriving to Lima we promptly locked all of our worldly belongings into the trunk of a cab and ventured into the city. Passing arid landscape, the beach (which was more like a pile of sandy dirt) we wound our way into Miraflores, the tourist district. Having managed to book a hostel not on the strip we spent our evening walking blocks and blocks to the ... read more

Tanaan ei ollut vuorossa museot eika taidenayttelyt, vaan Converse-kenkien osto. Eilen kuultiin kaupassa, etta eraassa Ita-Liman ostoskeskuksessa on oma Converse-myymala. Sinnepa siis suunnattiin. Kaytiin lounaalla ja lahdettiin sitten busseilla hankkiutumaan perille. Piti vaihtaa bussia ja selvittaa milla mennaan eteenpain. Bussit ovatkin taalla oma kulttuurinsa. Bussissa on rahastaja/sisaanheittaja, joka nousee pysakilla kadulle ja huutaa minne bussi on menossa. Bussiin saattaa nousta myos myyjia ja kerran kyytiin nousi mies joka julisti uskonnollista sanomaa. Paasimme perille.

Tanaan menimme elaintarhaan. Koska reitti sinne tuntui mutkikkaalta, ajoimme mennen tullen taksilla. Perilla ei nakynytkaan paljon muita turisteja. Ensimmainen osasto koostui ylangon elaimista, toinen viidakon elaimista ja kolmas muiden maanosien elaimista. Illalla kiertelimme sitten ostoksilla lahitienoon kaupoissa. Tyttarelleni tuli ostettua housut, itse ostin uuden takin, koska vanha valkoinen kesatakkini on tullut tiensa paahan: toisen taskun vetoketju on rikki. 'Unohdin' takin eraaseen nettilaan.... read more

Talla matkalla on usein tormannyt tuttuihin kasvoihin myohemmin. Liman mittakaava oli... read more

We left Nazca early on April 5th, heading straight for Ica and the desert oasis at Huachachina, 300km south of Lima. Most of the group were feeling a little hungover so the journey was quiet, but we all perked up at Huachachina, as the possibility of both relaxation and adventure stirred us either way. We could relax by the pool and enjoy the sun or go sandboarding on the huge dunes nearby. Guess what we did! Reaching these unbelievable sand mountains was via heavy duty buggies, and riding in them was like a rollercoaster ride! Racing over the dunes at fast speed, reaching the top of one and not knowing if there was anything the other side...luckily our drivers knew the area well! We then stopped at three different dunes to have a go with the ... read more

And so does shape. To tell a llama from an alpaca you have a look at its ears and its bum. Banana shaped ears curving inwards and you have a llama. A low set tail that demurely covers the nethers and you have an alpaca. Llamas are also normally larger. for us, size is an issue mainly in relation to distance or, more specifically, distance between places you want to visit. After months in Europe, the UK and Central America the size of South America is taking just a little getting used to. Not that Peru, for instance, is really that large. It is just very long. In no country is it possible to get to every place you want to see or experience. That, for us, has been one of the rules of travel. Perhaps ... read more

We had two beutiful days in Lima. We stayed again at Che Lagarto Hostel at Miraflores. The first day at evening we took a sightseeing tour of the city and visited Park of Fountains. The second day we went to Historic Center and Larcomar (entertainment center) on the coast. We had delicious sea food at Punto Azul rest. at Miraflores and just before leaving Lima we had a delicious but expensive lunch at a luxury rest., Malabar at San Isıdro. Although Wikitravel recommends Malabar Rest., it is luxury and expensive and is not for budgets. On 28th March we flew to Iquitos. We stayed at a beautiful hotel. We spent three days touring all the interests of the city. Iquitos is a jungle city where one can reach only by air or river. It is in ... read more
