R: We had a reasonably late start into Lima, our flight arriving at around 8pm. We went to El Salvador again on the way here so we are now experts in El Salvador airport including where to taste the best Guatamalan rum and which Subway has the better free wifi. As we collected our luggage at Lima it was clear that some items were being taken off the baggage carts and treated more carefully than the other items. They were in the shape of bubble wrapped religious statues. After a few minutes, a group of elderly nuns wandered over and grabbed one each and walked off with them under their arms. Now either they were exceptionally strong nuns, or all was not as it seemed... We had a luxury at Lima... We used a load of ... read more

We weren't on an overnight bus this time from Ica to Lima, but it was still pretty hot and uncomfortable. Avoiding drinking water to avoid having to go pee on this bus with no toilet, I also felt a bit light-headed on the way there. Which may explain the state of semi-awe I was in during our taxi ride to the hostel. It was nice to be back in a proper city again - for the first time in over a month and a half, since I was in Santiago, I saw skyscrapers and modern buildings. It felt nice to be somewhere developed again. So when we arrived in the neighbourhood of Miraflores, I almost couldn't contain myself. Towering glass hotels and apartment blocks perched on a long stretch of cliffs with a number of very ... read more

Juz dawno nie byłam tak wyspana - jetlag sprzyja siescie, a równik wstawaniu i chodzeniu spać z kurami. Kury są tu zreszta bardzo popularne - otwierają i zamykają każde menu. Prośba o empanadas - ichniejsze pierogi wielkości cepelinow - z samym serem nie spotyka żadnego zrozumienia u ekspedientki - mieso to podstawa tutejszych posiłków.

Breakfast was awesome; I've been avoiding OJ as it looks like it may have water in it but here it actually looked like squeezed juice so indulged in that and the fresh fruit on offer; I've got away with it a few times but I'll continue to be wary. First up we did a city tour of Lima which has a population of nearly 10 million people! We took in plenty of city sites with the - to be expected - churches and old buildings etc but my favourite was the museum and catacombs. I'd always wanted to go to some catacombs as we missed the ones in Rome and Paris. Catacombs are subterranean passageways with chambers used as burial places. They were just as I'd read about. Following this we went to get Trev a ... read more

Columbia to Ecuador and Peru Leaving Medellin looked like a big challenge for me,so I had a bit of a restless nights sleep, but I should not of worried so much as my notes and GPS all came together on the day and we headed south towards Santender de Quilichao for the night. The mountain roads just seemed to get better and better as the day went on. These few days in Columbia have been the best riding so far. Just stunning scenery. 22km from Pasto and we got dumped on, we managed to find some shelter through the worst of it and put on our wet gear. It stopped raining as we reached the hotel, where we parked all the bikes in a house/hotel garage/lounge. Our room was a cupboard with no where to dry anything. ... read more

I flew nonstop from Newark to Lima to start a 10 day tour with, Natural Habitat, of Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley plus a few days on the Amazon. Natural Habitat provided a tour guide, who was knowledgeable, caring and patient with his 13 'troopers'! I had a day before the tour began, so I explored Lima with two friends. Lima is Peru's capital. a large, urban city, sprawled on the edge of a coastal desert. Lima began life as a small settlement. It has many urban problems today but the old Colonial buildings are quite lovely and were greatly influenced by the Spanish. The city was founded by Francisco Pizarro on January 6, 1535. In 1920 the city began to grow and today there are 30 million people who live there. Much of ... read more

Lima is the capital city of Peru & is a mix of central business district, top range hotels and true slums. It is also covered in cloud almost all the time. It is at this point that me & Jin part ways as she stayed in Huaraz to do the Santa Cruz trek & I made my way further south. How I got there: I booked a Linea bus for S/.28 - after our trip from Trujillo to Huaraz I knew the company to be pretty comfortable & it was the cheapest bus around. The bus left at 9:30am & arrived at the Linea Terminal Lima at just gone 6pm. You need a passport to book this bus. *This bus only leaves on Sunday, Monday, Thursday & Friday otherwise it is night buses or Cruz del ... read more

Day 59 Lima, milestone and strange encounters with the traffic police Distance driven today: 97 miles / 156 km Cumulative distance driven: 10,705 miles / 17,228 km Today’s trip: Huacho to Lima, Peru Almost got big fine by the Lima traffic police for driving our bike on a normal road: yes, but we somehow managed to avoid it Today we had a short distance to ride, as our goal was to get to Lima. However, we were delayed significantly this morning when leaving Huacho, due to many streets at the center of the city being closed. The reason was the Independence Day of Peru coming up on Wednesday, and the numerous school parades taking place along the streets. When we finally got out of the city, over an hour later, we drove through the coastal desert ... read more

Hi All, So we arrived in Lima airport at 2pm, it was a lot hotter than we thought, lucky I still had shorts on and Vicky had about 4 layers so she was really hot!! Once we got our bags we found Vick’s bag had been tampered with as the pad lock wasn’t through the metal hooks of the bag but just through the material of the zip straps. She wasn’t too annoyed because she didn’t have anything in their at all worth stealing or that she couldn’t replace. It turns out that her bag had been chosen for a through inspection at the LAX airport whilst going through there own large luggage scans. There was a little leaflet inside stating that it isn’t their fault if they break the pad-lock and that the scans are ... read more
