Day 307 - Saturday 2 August I watched Arsenal's pre season friendly in the Emirates cup before Yolanda came to pick me up. Everybody I've met has told me that Limas a horrible place, its very dangerous and at this time of year its cloudy every day. That might be true but with Yolanda acting as my personal guide I think I'll have a different experience. She took me to Miraflores, the alternative travellers hangout to downtown. Its also supposed to be where I'm staying in a dormitory in a hostel if anybody in her family asks. Even though its cloudy (like manchester then), at least its not cold and I thought its a nice part of town. Its also by the sea which I haven't seen since Rio. However as its the middle of winter ... read more

Hola Everyone! I arrived safely to Lima on saturday after a pretty uneventful flight. I was actually pretty pleasantly surprised to find out that the flights that were not supposed to have any meals at all in fact had two meals. The theme of eating my way around south america has begun. Saturday night I was picked up by Jorge a super nice driver from CCS. He didn´t speak any english, and given the state of my spanish, we had an interesting ride. I managed to tell him I thought he was a good driver, which he thought was halarious (the driving in Peru is completely psycho). On sunday we spent the day touring around Lima a little bit. I went to the museum of the inquisition (spaniards are ass holes). We also went to Place ... read more

Hello, We arrived safely in Peru after yet another hassle free border crossing. It´s so well organised here with people directing you where to go and the queues moving fast. We had an eventful first night. I woke up in the middle of the night to find Deaks scratching what looked like bites all over her body. Within an hour she was covered in them and itching like mad so she went down to reception and accused them of having bedbugs to which they replied "no way". She came back upstairs, in agony, refusing to get back in her bed so she went out in the hall and the next thing I know she´s pulling this huge sofa in the room so that she could sleep on it. Luckily I was fine and wondering why Deaks ... read more

The 19 1/2 hour journey from Cuzco to Lima was the worst bus journey we've done, by a long way. We got on and almost immediately they fed us the usual bus slop for dinner, just after finishing we started bend after bend after bend. This continues for 4 hours until you stop in Abancay. From then on you get a few seconds of straight road and then bends all through the night. We managed to sleep ok but felt pretty rough when we were awake and getting up to stumble to the toilet was almost enough to tip us over the edge, but somehow neither of us actually was sick. The PanAmerican highway for the last stint up from Nazca to Lima was like the promised land! A smooth relatively straight road... Nazca would have ... read more

We said goodbye to the jungle and flew back to Lima this morning. The flight was weird, we landed at Cusco to drop people off and pick up more but we all stayed on the plane before it took off again to lima. Never been on a flight that's done that before! In Lima we went back to Miraflores and the hotel where we first stayed at the start of the tour. It was so weird being there and knowing everyone as when we first got there it was just me and Ann! I feel like the people on the tour are family now as we've spent so long together, especially the people who we did the Inca trail with. In the evening we went to a place near the sea front called Larco Mar to ... read more

Lima and the coast south of the capital The long vacation trip of this year goes to Peru with a short detour to Bolivia. Our plane landed in Lima so therefore it was quite natural for us to start the trip there. Our guidebooks tell us that it wise to not display that we are tourists because occasionally tourists are targeted for robberies and bag theft. So when arriving in Lima we decided to dress down, not have our cameras out and also keep the guidebooks and maps in our bags. After less than 5 minutes we met two construction workers on their way to their job. They happily greeted us with "¡Hola, gringos!" (which means "Hello, foreigners!"). We might as well face it that there is no way we are ever going to blend in ... read more

Blogger Bec We´ve arrived! Day 1 (real) of our Peru trip saw us take in the sights of Peru´s capital, Lima. We spent most of the previous afternoon in bed watching Nadal beat Federer - we were going to see the sights, really! But when you have the world´s best tennis players slugging it out on the world stage, you have to go with the flow... We mostly just walked around the capital, taking in daily life in the affulent suburb of Miraflores. The highlight of the jaunt was visiting the Inca ruins which lie smack bang in the middle of the suburb - the ruins once took up over 12 city blocks but due to rapid expansion and greedy property developers, the site got gradually eroded over time until there is just now one ... read more

After a very early start on Monday morning I got my first flight to Madrid from Heathrow. It was leaving at 6.20am so we had to be there at ridiculous 0 clock in the morning! Mum, Dad and Chris were going to work after seeing me off so I bet they were feeling shattered! Im very grateful to all of you for taking me, thankyou! We flew with Iberia, it was Ok but pretty basic. The flight from Madrid to Lima was delated by about 40mins so when we eventually landed in Lima (after 11.5 hours) we thought we d missed our transfer to the hotel, and when out bags came off near the end we were panicking slightly that they were missing, luckily we made it to the hotel bags and all! The rest of ... read more

Day 1: Shortly after we pulled away from the airport, into chaotic, screeching traffic, the city went black. The streets snarled with no guiding lights, cars began zooming down the wrong side of the road to bypass the mess. Daredevils on bikes or foot wove shadowly between the honking vehicles. I felt like I had landed in Cairo or Delhi. But no: Welcome to Lima! I am beginning to think Ecuador was a gentle introduction to South America... Despite the heart-thumping introduction to Peru, Lima has beguiled me. I am not sure why it is sniffed at on most itineraries, seen as simply a necessary transit point to Cuzco and other parts of the country. "No reason to linger...," I have been told on several occasions. However, in my short time here, I have observed pious ... read more

Heading to the Lake From Arica, Chile, we joined up with a couple from our relaxed hostel and bartered a ride in an old V8 taxi to take us the 10kms to Tacna, Peru. There we had a few hours to walk around the central park-area of town before getting an overnight bus up to Puno. The small city sits on the edge of ‘Lago Titicaca’; one of the world’s highest navigable lakes, which splits the border between Bolivia and Peru. We parted ways with the others and joined up with a tour at the busy lake-port, which started with a slow boat ride towards the middle of the lake. The first stop was at the famous ‘floating islands’; made completely out of the lake’s reeds. Family groups have lived on these massive reed-pontoons for hundred ... read more
