Last blog entry from me! It has been an amazing 6 months of which I have some fantastic memories. I have learnt so much and feel so lucky to have experienced some of the things I have and met some of the people that I have. It is such an eye opener to see how some of the people in this world live and what they have to go through each day just to get by. I realise now how much I take for granted. Obviously all these highs are not without some lows. I remember someone saying to me the night before I came away to always remember that tomorrow is a different day and I didn't take too much notice at the time but I soon learnt how true it was. There were some ... read more

Hello, We set off from Lone Pine after breakfast for our 5 hour drive to Mariposa where we were stopping for 2 nights to visit Yosemite. The sat nav actually took us through Yosemite National Park so we got a bit of an idea of just how beautiful it was. I couldn't believe how amazing the scenery was and how big it was. We got a 7 day pass for $20 as it was the cheapest you could get. We finally arrived in Mariposa late afternoon and checked into our hotel where we were given a disabled room! We drove down the road in search of lunch and ended up in a diner. We are both so sick of greasy food now and the huge portions. I order off the appetizer section and it is still ... read more

Hello We arrived at Williams after a 7 hour drive from Palm Springs. This was our stop for Grand Canyon and we stayed there 2 nights. To stay inside the national park is so expensive which is why we chose Williams which is the nearest town and only half hour away. We headed there the next day and it was packed with people. We finally got a space in one of the car parks and set off to do a walk of the south rim. It was amazing - better than I thought it would be. It seemed like it went on forever and the colours were great too. We had hoped to see the glass platform but apparently it was over a 200 mile ride away. Doh! We walked around for a few hours in ... read more

Hello, We had an uneventful flight into Los Angeles although I was kept amused by a woman in front of us who was travelling alone with 3 small kids including twin girls of about 2. One didn't stop crying and wouldn't let her mum put her down and the other realised she knew how to undo her seatbelt so kept undoing it and wandering off and the mum couldn't reach her so the flight crew and other random people ended up having to look after her! Once we'd been grilled by customs we headed out of the airport and got a bus to Union Station and then the Metro to Hollywood Boulevard baby!! It was great and buzzing with people and the hostel I'd booked was in prime location. We dumped our stuff and went straight ... read more

July 30th 2008

Hello, We arrived safely in Peru after yet another hassle free border crossing. It´s so well organised here with people directing you where to go and the queues moving fast. We had an eventful first night. I woke up in the middle of the night to find Deaks scratching what looked like bites all over her body. Within an hour she was covered in them and itching like mad so she went down to reception and accused them of having bedbugs to which they replied "no way". She came back upstairs, in agony, refusing to get back in her bed so she went out in the hall and the next thing I know she´s pulling this huge sofa in the room so that she could sleep on it. Luckily I was fine and wondering why Deaks ... read more

Hello, We had a nice long bus journey into Bolivia. We left San Pedro de Atacama at 8.30pm on an 11 hour overnight journey to Arica. I managed to get the only seat on the bus that was broken and didn´t recline which was not good and to top it all off I was right at the back next to the disgusting smelly toilet which made me feel sick pretty much the whole night. Not the best of journeys!!! We arrived in Arica at 7am where Deaks and I hopped straight onto another bus heading to La Paz - the capital city of Bolivia and the highest capital city in the world. This journey was to be another 10 hours long. It was a bit of a shambles, the driver assigned some people to particular seats ... read more

July 4th 2008

Hola! Well we finally arrived in Chile nearly a day late after our flight got cancelled when the plane got struck by lightning! We were all sent back into the city on coaches and booked into a very posh hotel called Rendevous where luxury rooms awaited and a 3 course meal - excellent!! We soon found out that wake up calls were at 5.15am and we were leaving the hotel at 6am the next morning so we decided against another night out in Auckland and instead I had the best bath ever (definitely getting old!). We decided to get in touch with some friends that we went out with in Queenstown a few times who had arrived in Auckland that day. We saw them quickly before we left but it was a shame we didn´t get ... read more

Hello, We said goodbye to Jane and Doran and flew into Wellington on my birthday. It was only a 40 minute flight and was over before it even began! That evening we went out on the town to celebrate me getting old. I was very pleased to be asked for ID in the first bar (the other girls didn't!) so that cheered me up! I got a free cocktail too so it was all good! We met up with Rachael who worked in HR at DLA until she came home to NZ last Christmas. She joined us with her cousin Brendan and a few of her friends. We went on a bar crawl and ended up totally smashed and from the look of some of the pictures hunted down a poor policeman which I don't even ... read more

Hello from cold New Zealand! Not used to this coldness after 3 months of sun!!! Have been spoilt! We flew into Christchurch on 1 June and were greeted by Jane and Doran (Jane is my mum's oldest friend for those of you who don't know). It was so nice to see them and to actually be greeted at an airport. Every time we get off a flight there's loads of people waiting to see their loved ones and no-one there to see us!! :o( We stayed with Jane and Doran for 2 nights in their lovely house. I was very excited to have my own bedroom and access to a bath! Don't know what I would have done without these stops in between staying with friends! We went shopping in Christchurch to get some warmer clothes ... read more

Hello, Last blog entry for Australia - booo!!!!!!!! We flew from Sydney to Alice Springs - a 3 hour flight which saw us well and truly away from civilisation! It was a cool view looking out of the plane window before we landed. We arrived at our hostel - Annie's Place and checked in and spent the rest of that day chilling out and doing washing etc and catching up on sleep (have forgotten what that is!). Day 1 of our Mulgas Ayers Rock trip started at 4.45am - eeeeeeeeeek! 24 of us loaded onto our bus in the pitch black and passed out. Two hours later, once we could actually see, we stopped at a petrol station and finally met each other! We travelled for another 2 hours on 1 straight road and our tour ... read more
