Midwestern Gringo Arrives in Lima Arrived Hostal Mami Panchita, arriving shortly after midnight. Lima plane was 1.75 hours late leaving and had to fly around turbulence in Panama. Made the Chi -- Miami plan with just a few minutes to spare. There was some delay getting a man established in a seat on the plane headed for Chicago. The driver from Mami was there to pick me up after I exited through custom gate, a relief for one fresh to Lima and Peru. My limited Spanish will get a work out. There was a throng of people with names on placards waiting for their people. Once outside the airport grounds one knows they are in Lima--not Madrid for example. The shanty towns are just outside the airport near the Callou District. This hostal would be impossible ... read more

Hola Everyone, I am off to Chile tomorrow. I am really excited to go to Chile and have a fabulous time, but I am also really sad to leave Lima. (side note- no blog yesterday because I was temporarily bed ridden after vomiting in the early morning and having to miss my placement. I also had to miss my goodbye dinner on the pacific ocean with all my friends. The good news is that I am feeling better today and that I was able to go to my placement. It only took 24 hours of sleep, 8 cups of coca tea,10 gatorade juice boxes, and some donut holes (timbits) from my friends....oh and lots of gravol). Today at Mother Theresa's I had a really sweet goodbye. All the sisters and the laundry women showered me with ... read more

One last thing... I am REALLY REALLY REALLY far away from the jungle area where the government has declared an 'emergency state' because aboriginal groups are protesting. Aboriginal groups are simply blocking highways and oil and natural gas installations in protest of laws that facilitate the sale of their lands. Sounds reasonable to me. Seriously though, not to worry I am about a 4 hour flight with an additional 28 hours bus ride away. xo ... read more

Hi Everyone, It feels like it has been a while since Ive had the chance to sit down at the computer and reflect on my trip. I have also been seriously falling behind in my journal writting, so hopefully in the next couple of days Ill be able to catch up. Yesterday I went to my placement early in the morning as usual. So far every morning this week I havebeen working doing laundry at Mother Theresa's. We wash everything by hand and then rinse it in three different buckets of water. Then we ring it out and hang it out to dry. We wash everything with cold water because there is no running hot water. We were big approns and rubber boots and once in a while we have to stand in the basins and ... read more

Hola! This is going to be a quick note because I only have a few minutes at the internet cafe, but here it goes.... I am back in Lima after an amazing weekend in Cuzco to see Machu Pichu. Machu Pichu was completely mind blowing and none of my pictures do it any justice. The flights there and back were pretty uneventul (which was a good thing). I was the only one o the three o us who went who didnt have any side effects from the altitude. I think it was because I drank so much coca tea. The only thing I did come back with was lots of mosquito bites (they were a lot in Aguas Calientes). The walk about the ruins was surprisingly more difficult than I thought it would be. We also ... read more

A new day and everything is looking much better. Even though the hotel is a bit basic it’s right in the middle of Miraflores and within walking distance to everything. We are all enjoying Lima. I suppose it’s because after only seeing desert for the past week we are now seeing green grass, green trees and lovely flowers…not to mention what the folk in Lima call rain but to us Aussies it’s probably not enough to settle the dust. Did the tourist things about town and went and saw Pulcannia and the other pyrmanids. In the Pulcannia area the developers had bulldozed 11hectares of ruins before the govt stepped in and declared it a national treasure. Saw a native Peruvian dog…somebody has to love it….a dark skinned, hairless dog with just a tuff of orangey ... read more

Hola Family and Friends, So I definitely spoke too soon about the camera. It completely crapped out yesterday and I bought a new one today. I did two things without a camera and it was driving me crazy to watch other people take pictures while I couldn´t. Everyone told me they would send me there photos but it´s just not the same. Besides, I don´t know if the people in Peru have a ¨special¨relationship with the people in Korea but my camera was pretty cheap. Hopefully it lasts to take photos of the mountains. This morning the time at Mother Theresa´s FLEW by. The sisters had us working hard at folding what was probably 20 loads of laundry. Twice a week we strip all the beds, wash all the matresses/floors/etc. Everything was going well until we ... read more

Monday, July 28th, is el Día de Independencia in Peru which basically means that the world stops and no one works for four whole days (kinda like 4th of July in the States). Some friends and I decided to spend our 4 days of liberation in a small beach town called Huanchaco (about a 10 hour bus ride north of Lima). The first two days we spent just hanging out at the beach (which is one of my favorite things to do at the fault of my mother ). The first day we really wanted to go swimming in the ocean despite the frigid temperature (of the water and the air), but we went for it anyways. I also went surfing for the very first time in my life, which is hard to believe considering that ... read more

Hola Amigos! So I went out to buy a pair of slippers for around the volunteer house and figured I couldn´t resist stopping in at the internet cafe just for a quick blog. This morning we headed to the MT house bright and early. We got there a little earlier than usual. Today I my jobs were bed making, breakfast feeding, helping with physio, and snuggling. You got it folks snuggling. One of the little boys who I have been working with who has a rare deformity (his calves are fused to his thighs, there are only 12 people in the world with his condition) literally wanted to snuggle for 30 minutes. We would just whisper Hola and mucho gusto (nice to meet you) and then laugh. What a sweet heart. Also, GOOD NEWS!!! My camera ... read more

Hola! So although not much as changed since yesterday, I suppose that I do have a few things that I can report on (basically I got the opportunity to go to the internet cafe because other people were going and I wouldn´t be able to go alone). Yesterday afternoon we went to the travel agent and officially booked our trip to Machu Pichu, Aguas Caliente/Cuzco. We are leaving friday morning at 5 am (yup we´ll be at the airport at 3 am). I am so incredibly excited to be going. Especially since rumour has it among the locals that they´ll be shutting it down in January of 2009 for a mass restoration project. After booking our trip we bought some cereal and PB to get us through breakfast over the next couple of weeks. As I ... read more
