I knew I had woken up later than usual this morning, because the three people I was sharing with had already left for the day. There seemed little point in rushing to get ready this morning, especially with yesterdays events still hanging heavily on my mind. I eventually trudged down the stairs and towards the dinning room, where I arrived just in time breakfast. I didn't feel particularly hungry, but still managed to make my way through the mundane stone baked rolls before heading back upstairs. I poured over the Internet for hours, looking at what there was to do in Cusco and still feeling rather uninspired. All the energy and drive to travel and discover had left me, with the news yesterday. The anger at my situation and the world at large for seemingly causing ... read more

We have successfully arrived in South America. Starting with 2 days in Lima and then a quick flight to Cusco. We arrived in Lima at 10:45pm and finally made it to our hostel (the crazy streets of Lima kept us awake on the drive to the hostel, i doubt road rules are enforced! -Blue House at about 1 am. After a quick chat with the friendly manager we got some much needed sleep. The next day we didn´t have solid plans and decided to wing it walking around the Miraflores, Barranca area. We hiked all the way up to the edge of Lima where there is a lit cross which symbolizes the war between Peru and Chile and a redeemer statue. Then we hiked back down the hill and had lunch at the fisherman´s wharf - ... read more

Cuzco - By far the most touristy place I have been and by far one of the most interesting, mystical and beautiful places on the planet. It has it all; history, mystery, cathedrals, pride and blatant beauty. You can’t get away from the tourists and every Tom, Dick and Suzanne trying to sell you a pedicure, massage (pronounced; maasaage) and a trek and every person you meet complains about that, I just smile, because honey, if you went there, you’re part of the ‘problem’. The city itself is absolutely gorgeous! You can’t help but just love it and you understand why some backpackers end up staying here for months, although I am sure the famous pub crawl that happens every night around the square might have something to do with it. After a day or two ... read more

At the disgusting hour of 7am, David (Pablo´s mate) and I turned up in the city centre to meet one of his friends, Juan (who used to volunteer at the orphanage) and two French girls who are living in La Paz. The guys like to visit the kids every couple of weeks and take them stuff, and today it was blankets and toothpaste. We got into a mini-bus taxi (possibly the most environmentally unfriendly vehicle on the planet), and headed for a small village by Lake Titicaca. There the guys were immediately swamped by older kids who were running a restaurant on the lake to learn skills. In the restaurant for lunch, I was assured that the fish soup was amazing, so obligingly ordered it for a starter. After realising that I was the only person ... read more

Copacabana was our last stop in Bolivia, next destination: Cusco in Peru. We booked a nice "cama"-bus for the nine hour busride but when we showed up at bus agency half an hour before departure, things got a little shady. We should mention that there are not just one or two companies that offer transportation but numerous bus companies and travel agencies going with different buses and at different times. So it is really just a matter of choosing wisely. We were told that we would first take a normal travel coach to Puno in Peru and there we would change into the nicer nightbus to Cusco. The ticket we got did not have any seat number or any other information on it which puzzled us a little because we never had that before. When we ... read more

So, instead of doing the classic tour-organised trek up to Machu Picchu we decided to visit some isolated, gringo-free ruins on our own. Surprisingly, Jens (our German friend from Colca Canyon) was willing to put up with us for another trek, so together with him we decided to do the Choquequirao trek. Choquequirao is an Inca ruins site about 30km from any village with a road. So the only way to get there is to trek and camp! We spent a day in Cusco getting everything we needed, from renting a tent, mats and a gas stove to buying cutlery, a pot and 4kg of pasta. Then we spent the evening boiling eggs... our only protein source for 4 days! Day 1 Jens came to pick us up early from our hostel. We caught a bus ... read more

A month ago, in the early hours, our bus crawled in to Cusco. This was very pleasing as it was where we wanted to go. The bus was amazing and certainly the poshest we had been on. At the bus station in Arequipa there was a departure lounge after checking in and a sophisticated system for getting baggage on board. In fact your correspondent was reminded of an airport, although there were no planes or air traffic control towers or cushions available in case of a crash. The only problem was a huge sign with big letters stating in no uncertain terms that alcohol was not allowed to be consumed on the bus. Dear readers, your correspondent had just bought such type of drink and decided on the only course of action available – I threw ... read more

Just got back from the project phase. It wasnt quite as i expected as there was absolutely no running water so no showers and no toilets, just a hole in the ground. We didnt end up staying in with the locals as we arrived quite late at night, so the whole week was spent in a tent in a big hall. When we arrived the children brought over a deer for us to stroke and some piglets and sheep which was nice. To help the community we worked on a medical centre where there was an inch thick of dust on the floor and no windows. we have sanded and cemented the walls, painted them, cemented the outside, pickaxed some massive grassy ledge and rebuilt a ledge out of stones and cement, made a path, painted ... read more

Day 6:- Lots of waiting around to fly over the Nazca lines today. The lines are huge and quite amazing, although tricky to see. There belongs a mystery as to how or who created the lines, however later in the day we visited the cemetery of Chauchilla, which showcases Nazcan mummies, and our tour guide told us that the lines were easy to create with rope and the only reason that they are surrounded in mystery is commercial! Night bus to Arequipa, which is where I had my best sleep to date. Day 7:- In Arequipa we visited the Convent of Santa Catalina, a nunnery. Very interesting. We also admired El Mistri volcano from afar before going out in the evening to watch Peru´s semi-final in the Copa America against Uruguay (dressed in a Peruvian football ... read more
