The first city we visited in Peru definitely didn’t disappoint. Cuzco, once the capital of the infamous Inca Empire is now the capital of tourism in the country. And there is a reason why. The city is immaculately maintained and differs little from many years ago. It is a place that is steeped in history, South America's oldest and continually inhabited city. The main square, known as the Plaza de Armas, is a large area surrounded by two massive churches and lots of two story balcony laden buildings all restored to the colonial fashion (the Spanish finally attained the city from the Quechan people in the 1500s). The big US companies such as Mc Donald’s, Starbucks and KFC that are on the square are not immediately recognisable as they could not put their commercial signage or style ... read more

The overnight bus from Lima to Cusco was as pleasant as a 20 hour bus ride could be. Leaving at 5.30pm, the majority of the ride was overnight so it helped to cut down how long the ride actually felt. When we booked the tickets online we found that the executive seats and normal seats were oddly the same price. We later found out that if we had booked the seats in Lima it probably would have been significantly cheaper. The company itself Cruz del Sur has a great reputation within Peru, offering really comfortable seats and service, the buses are very modern and very well maintained and the drivers have to rotate every four hours or so. So in the end we didn’t mind paying extra, plus we got to choose our seats and being ... read more

The Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) took place in Cuzco on 24 June. We decided not to buy tickets, which ranged from US$45 - $160, but to enjoy what was going on around town. We were woken at dawn by the sound of fireworks but we decided that a warm bed beat a splash of colour! At 10:00 am we heard drums beating and this time we ventured down to the street. As luck would have it we were only a few metres away from the parade route. We watched the dancers go by in colourful costumes, then the queen, the king’s entourage and the current Inca king, flanked by about 50 policemen. We rushed around to the main square to view what was happening there. We found a reasonable viewing place and found ourselves ... read more

We arrived at the bus station in Cuzco at 5:45 am, 15 minutes before our scheduled arrival time. The person who was to transfer us to our hotel was nowhere in sight. So we waited ... and waited ... and waited until I was more than a little grumpy. I called our travel agent in Lima at 6:30 am who, much to my surprise, answered his phone. Thank goodness we had bought a Peruvian cellphone sim card for our phone! Shortly after 7 am we were greeted by a very animated woman full of apologies and she escorted us to our Hotel. We decided a five minute sleep would ease our post travel sluggishness ... (quiet snoring sounds) ... and at 11.00 am we roused ourselves, had a shower and headed out for some brunch feeling ... read more

אחרי ... read more

After spending another unproductive two nights in the Wild Rover in La Paz, Andrew and I finally boarded a light-aircraft to Rurrenabaque in the Amazon Basin. It was an incredible and slighly nervy 45 minute journey over spectacular mountains and into the jungle. We arrived in a completely different world - for the first time since Brazil I was in a hot and humid tropical climate. Oh, and the mosquitos were back... with a vengeance. We quickly booked on a three day tour of the surrounding Pampas, a large wetland known for being the best place to view wildlife in Bolivia. That evening, while having a few drinks in the local 'Jungle Bar' I noticed our tour guide was spookily beckoning me over from the other side of the room. Using my, let's say, 'developing' Spanish ... read more

1st June Last day before the Big Birthday (thank you for all the wishes). It has been a chilled out day, went for a leisurely walk up a small incline to ensure my legs will handle the trekking tomorrow and it went well. Not too many stops were needed other than to admire the scenery...views down to Cusco! First thing this morning I stumbled across what appeared to be a practise run of some form of ceremonial sequence in the grounds just round the corner from my hotel. The majority of participants were school children....what a great way to spend a morning away from the class room! In addition there were several public displays around the main squares with traditional Peruvian dancing and music, where the participants were in the local costumes....very colourful. Later in the ... read more

Well I survived the 20.5hr bus journey, the first 15 were ok. Thankfully the scenery on the last 5.5hrs made up for the turns and twists and the not so great road surface...needless to say I survived and I am looking forward to walking for a couple of days before having to venture onto another bus. Checked in to the hostal I will be meeting my trekking group tomorrow evening to save moving my gear around. The owner recommended I catch a couple of hours sleep before venturing out to help with the acclimatisation....very wise words indeed. Only mild altitude symptoms: sore head, dry cough and feeling thirsty. The coca tea is definitely helping as well as the nurofen. Having stuck to vegetarian meals over the past couple of days I decided to bite the bullet ... read more

So after 32,000 kms travelled by air sea and land, (4,500 km Punta Arenas-Cusco direct), 72,500 words typed out with one finger on my I-touch and uploaded into 49 stories I find myself sat at a Starbucks cafe in Lima airport with a tall mocha and cream typing out my 50th and final tale. Destination -London and then onto the west country and home for a decent bath and pint of real ale. I have just flown into Lima from Cusco and have 5hrs on the ground before next flight. It was a choice between a $50, 26hr uncomfotable bus ride or $120, 70min smooth flight. No contest really. I have spent the last few days resting after the Inca Trail hike and have used that time wandering around Cusco visiting buildings and museums to gain ... read more

18.5.2012 Went out onto the highlands again today in a different direction to see Moray which is a huge terraced stadium like structure built by the Inca’s in a volcano base, a sight to be seen! Then onto a salt works, all these ponds built into the side of a ravine, lots of walking and very steep, Alison had a bit of breathing problems but we just take it slow and steady. Then back to Cusco early arvo for some free time which was great, as we have been on the go the whole time here. Elder went to hospital to visit Allan and then we all went out for pizza which was a nice change. Allan going back to Aus tomorrow or next day with a nurse escort to Lima. Heading to Macchu Picchu tomorrow, ... read more
