16.5.2012 Had a great flight down to Cusco (or up!!!) took the 1 hr and arrived around 11. The climb up into the highlands was amazing, and then gazing over the glaciers etc it was very scenic. Cusco in a huge valley, and airstrip right smack bang in the middle of town, very interesting. Was taken straight to the hotel – briefed on our itinerary – and then for arvo Cusco tour – telling us to walk slowly etc because of the effects of the altitude. Well!!! the five of us all felt a bit HO HUM!! I can tell you, light headed, headaches etc, drinking plenty of water and electrolytes. I remember reading somewhere that you should take your time getting to Cusco to try and acclimatize, and don’t do what a lot of tour ... read more

Hello friends and family, We are currently sitting on the beach in Equador, after making our way through Northern Peru. However, I must start where I left off........The Bolivian/Peru border. We thought some trouble might arise as we were 10 days over our visa, but thanks to the Custom officers poor math skills and Alanas tears, we were able to cross without issues. We travelled down to Arequipa, Perus second largest city (Sits at the base of Mt Misti, a snow capped volcanoe). After of few days of relaxing by the pool and eating nice foods we were off again. Onto ANOTHER bus and back up into high altitudes. This time to the famous city of Cusco. Insert small history lesson>>>> There are sooooo many churches in Cusco because when the spanish destroyed an Inca 'temple' ... read more

Machu Picchu yestarday! Excited for pictures? I bet you are but you're going to have to wait. I just finished transfering 368 shots from my camera and we've yet to pull any from Sams. With editing and uploading the photographic excellence it may be a few days as we are en route to lake Titicaca tomorrow. In the mean time we have been busy checking out Cusco city and we have a few images to unload. Cusco is a pretty big city and the highest one we've been to yet at 3400 metres. First impressions, the place is old, really old and for the most part it has aged well. On the way in seeing all the redish brown mud brick and tin roofs gave us the impression that we we're heading into some sort of ... read more

From our incredible jungle trip, we returned to Cusco exhausted and very smelly Thursday evening (7ish). Hostel Andrea did not have one of the nice rooms that we had previously stayed in so we shared a room with a young French couple. They had just arrived from Arequipa after a challenging bus ride. They were the perfect people to share a room with as they were exhausted as well and planned to be in bed early. So, after a nice nearby dinner, the entire room was asleep by no later than 10:00. Friday, the 6th, was a relaxing catchup day. We explored Cusco a little more. Had an awesome lunch with Alpaca. It was Good Friday so there were some small parades and things. We changed hostel rooms so we could get a clean shower. We ... read more

On Saturday March 31, we awoke early and walked 40 minutes to the Puno bus station. We walked back through the street market and I got to limbo under one of the umbrellas, which one of the local Peruvian woman got a kick out of. She said something about me being a giant. We made our bus with only a few minutes to spare before its 8:30 am departure. And unfortunately, the hostel host girl met us at the bus station since we accidentally left with our room key. Oops. The bus turned out to be a cama bus (bed bus), so that started off awesome. Unfortunately, again, all the windows were closed and there was no air so the ride was stuffy and uncomfortable. I tried opening the emergency exit window on the top of ... read more

Day 137 Saturday 25th February Woke up at 4.00am did the final pack and got ready and we jumped in a taxi at 5.00am to the airport which is about an half hour drive and $58 reals with no traffic. Our flight is with Taca International and was an airbus to Lima on the way we crossed the Atlantic Ocean leaving Rio, over the Andes and then the Pacific Ocean. Lima airport was a little confusing as there were no signs to the domestic airlines, we also had to deal with a new time zone and we had conflicting help on when our plane was leaving. At one point we thought we only had 15 minutes to get to our flight but after going through customs we worked it out and had over an ... read more

Hi everyone, I arrived safe and sound yesterday morning after my three flights, the only delay was at heathrow due to the snow, everything else was as planned. I arrived to bright sunshine and a sky bluer than any I have seen before. Jeremy and Arturo, the coordinators for the Cusco project greeted me at the airport and gave me a whistle stop tour of the town, it is really beautiful and I am really looking forward to exploring it further. The first day passed quickly, I arrived at about 11 in the morning and met the girls at the orphanage that I am calling home for the next 4 weeks. The children greeted me with smiles and enthusiasm, much in the same way 9 Vianney greet me on a Monday morning! I have to confess ... read more

Having fallen asleep really early last night, I was one of the first people up and downstairs for breakfast this morning. I hadn't been up for breakfast this early before, and I think it might have upset a few people that their breakfast table was now taken up by me. Nonetheless, I tucked into my bread rolls and jam whilst trying to catch up with what had been going on in the world for the last couple of days. I was soon joined by the Australian couple that I had spoken to yesterday at breakfast, and we began chatting about our adventures and what they had thought of Machu Picchu. It was great to get some advise and tips from people who had just done the trip as I still wasn't quite sure what to expect. ... read more

I had spent much of yesterday watching countless movies in the hostels chilly TV room, exactly as you should do on new years day. Looking out of the window I had been rather glad to have made that choice, as it did nothing but rain for most of the day. I had popped out during one of the few dry spells to get provisions, and the remnants of the night before loomed large over the normally buzzing Plaza de Armas. Broken glass and parts of firework had littered the streets and pavements despite the cities best efforts to clear up after the mayhem. I was also feeling a little under the weather after the mixed burritos o had had for dinner, and staying close to a bathroom had become a bit of a priority. This morning ... read more

Having planned to meet up with Tim and Harrison for a few drinks later today, I was keen to try and do some more of Cusco's culture before entering into the alcohol fuelled madness of New Years Eve that would no doubt reign later. My first priority though, was a hearty breakfast to keep myself going. I had bought some eggs yesterday, and once I had manoeuvred myself into the little kitchen alongside Kathy, who was busy serving everybody else breakfast, began cooking them on the small gas stove. It was a pleasant change to be having scrambled egg rather than butter and jam on my rolls, although it did raise a few eyebrows amongst the other guests once I sat down to enjoy them. Once I'd eaten I began the walk into town and my ... read more
