Where in the world do I currently live? My final destination in Peru is Vista Alegre, a village on top of a mountain near the city of Ayacucho (10-min bus ride). I am not sure where the 'happy view' (vista alegre) is, but there is a mirador (panoramic viewpoint) where you can see all of Ayacucho, below. It is a lovely place for photo-taking, as you know how much I love taking photos :) For me the main center of Vista Alegre is a large square-like clearing where the bus runs through. The clearing has a playground and soccer/basketball court. Eight different roads lead to and from the clearing. It is the closest thing to a town square here but the difference is that it is not paved (except for the basketball court). When cars and ... read more

Got here October 6. Yes, it was sad leaving Pisco, even though the living conditions were kind of a grind. I figured out the bus plan at more or less the last minute (it doesn't leave from Pisco even though there's a station there...ended up taking a cab to the little crossroads town with the depot ($3) and liked the driver who was very nice to me. We dropped off bags, found a restaurant that hadn't caved in--most had--and he told them to take care of me. It was a great woman about 70 who ran it--the best chicken I've had up to this point on the trip...told her that and the cook was thrilled. Also real french rolls..didn't understand the full story but it's unusual to bake them that way here and she was proud ... read more

Well last week was a pretty chilled out week, which I was definitely in need of after my crazy weekend! On monday we returned from our weekend at the coast and so on tuesday I was pretty exhausted still. I went to work in the morning, and had fun playing with my wawa's. Laine also came with me as she does not want to go back to her clinic for her last week, and it was nice to have someone else there with me. Apart from anything else its really nice to have someone that I can actually talk to! My spanish is improving I think, and me and Gloria are now able to have some conversations, and I can understand most of what she asks me, but we still struggle sometimes. We had a new ... read more

Hey everyone. So another busy week for me. I'm at the end of my second week here and I can't believe how quickly the time has gone, I'm also nearly halfway through my entire trip and I really can't believe that! Last weekend there was only five of us in the house as every one else had gone on the Llama trek up the mountains, and on the whole it was a pretty lazy weekend. I didn't do much at all on sat, just hung around at home, read lots of my book and only left the house for a leisurely stroll down to the plaza and back, it was really nice. We also got spoilt by the chefs and had gorgeous food all weekend! On saturday night we went out and met up with some ... read more

Hi everyone. I'm really sorry that I haven't written sooner but its abeen a bit crazy this week, we've been really busy, I've been ill and I'm getting really pissed off with the internet connection here, which is so unreliable you wouldn't believe it! I've been able to check my bank balance for the first time this mornng, normally it just won't open the pages, very annoying! My first week in Ayacucho has been good. Like the start of my Lima placement, our first day consisted of an orientation meeting followed by a brief visit to some of the work sites and, after lunch, a tour of some of the city. Ayacucho is absolutely beautiful and it is so nice to be away from the noise, traffic and stress of Lima. We visited a couple artesans' ... read more

There seems to be an abundance of barbed wire in Peru. A single wire runs around every patch of grass along the sidewalks no matter how small the patch may be. The reason for the barbed wire we are told, is to keep the dogs out of the grass. For this to be effective the wire ends up being just at calf height on a human leg and many a volunteer have fallen victim to torn pant legs. The dogs however, simply hop the wire and do their buisness. Oh Peru, when will you learn? Peruvian miscommunicaiton was at its all time high this past weekend. The independence day celebrations actually took place the day before independence day and the running of the bulls on sunday was not running but actually a bull fight. Needless ... read more

Slow weeks continue here in Ayacucho. There have been strong rumors circulating through the clinics that the stikes will be over by next week. We all know better than to hope but its hard not to. There were talks in lima this past weekend and things are looking good so maybe these rumors might come true. Last week ended slowly. We went to a campaign in a neighborhood further down in the valley, unfortunatly for us there was no general doctor so there was nothing for us to do. We helped translate a poster from english to spanish for the veteranarian about zoonic diseases but that was it. The weekend was slow and quiet and the four of us who stayed in the house enjoyed the quiet. Sometimes you forget how loud living in a house ... read more
