Well, we finally got beaten by big rocks and water as we tried to negotiate the Colca Canyon loop. We could have built a bridge, as we did in a previous Rocky Road Adventure, but it would have taken all day !! The fact that there has been so much rain and snow over the past few weeks, we were lucky to have got as far as we did. We headed off to Arequipa with our sun roofs wide open, enjoying the sunshine, as we climbed the mountain we could see big dark threatning clouds building in front of us, we stopped and secured that, lucky we did as within twenty minutes and as we got to the top of the mountain at 4840 meters we were driving through a snow storm. As we descended we ... read more

Left Arequipa at 6.30 am after an early breakfast which was again, a really good buffet although the coffee is not to our taste and often comes ready mixed a la camp coffee but lots of nice fruit juices and yoghurt and at this hotel, a strange looking but tasty muesli. Scrambled eggs and fresh bead with yummy jams. On the road to Chivay crossing one of the high passes (max height around 5200 metres). Had a few loo stops as recommended to drink plenty of water although these tended to be behind bushes or rocks or buddy system on a few occasions. Stopped at a service station for Mata de Coca (hot water with coca leaves), a mild stimulant supposed to help with altitude sickness. Same plant as cocaine so we can be high on ... read more

Dust, Snow, Sleet and Slush in one day We left Cusco in absolutely beautiful mountain weather, retracing the road back down to Sicuani, where we refueled and headed off into the mountains and a 4885 meter pass on our way to Chivay, and the Colca Canyon. This road, traditionally has had it’s challenges and today was going to prove to be no exception. As we headed up towards Yauri, with great views looking down on Lago Descanso, which is higher than Lake Titicaca. This section of dusty road is under major reconstruction, so we had many delays waiting for huge machinery and trucks that were moving tons of rocks around. As we gained altitude, we found ourselves above the low cloud and the temperatures began to drop accordingly. Reaching the mining town of Tintaya and negotiating ... read more

Chivay Up at 5AM, we were on a 6AM bus to the nearby town of Chivay. Situated at around 3600 metres above sea level, we arrived at around 9AM with a dire need for breakfast to survive the day at an altitude that was around 1000 metres higher than we’d been at in Arequipa. After purchasing our s/35 “boleto turistico” (tourist ticket - good for a week and needed by anyone who steps foot in Canyon country) we took a auto-rickshaw from the bus station in to the Plaza de Armas, which the Lonely Planet told us was 15 minutes walk away and so we thought s/2 was a fair price. Three blocks and less than a minute later, I was curious as to whether the LP writer for Chivay was perhaps wheelchair bound or missing ... read more

Day 5: After nearly 10 hours on an overnight bus, well, feeling rather restless.... but may i say, if i was ever to travel by overnight bus, this is the daddy of all overnight busses. Not only is it twice the size of a normal coach, it has a stewardess that serves food and drinks at the beginning of the trip. Me and Pham lucked out as we got the equivalent of the emergency exit seats on this bus so there was pleny of leg room!! We arrive Arequipa about 6am, at which point this is the highest we have been at 2800 meters above sea level... not really feeling that different, so no signs of attitude sickness yet... The day is a free day to wander the city and see the sights, the square and ... read more

Hey all. Having a blast! I am in a small town called Chivay in the Colca Valley in the south west part of Peru. We´ve done and seen so many things in the last few days and have been without any internet access for a few days. My last post was from Nazca, but just prior to that we had been in a place called Huacachina. Huacachina is a village built in an oasis in the Peruvian desert. From there we took dune buggies into the high sand dunes and ripped through the sand, amazing! We stopped a top a half dozen sand dunes and used sandboards to slide down on our bellies. They were incredibly high, and the views were amazing. In Nazca we visited a necropolis, an ancient burial ground that has been excavated ... read more

October 31, 2009 - Sibayo, Peru Still affected by altitude sickness, I took some Nurofen Plus at about 10:45pm last night to help me sleep - it did the trick! I woke at about 5:30am to the not to distant sound of a voice over a loud speaker, presumably from the town square only 50 metres away. We later find out that the use of the town´s PA system is for news broadcasts and to advertise work where labour is required - this town is also rebuilding from an earthquake and most of the town is pretty ´new. After eating some of my brakfast - rice, tomato, fried chips and steak - we are ready to farewell the family and thank them for their hospitality before once more going on the mini-bus for our next destination ... read more

October 30, 2009 - Chivay F$#KING ALTITUDE SICKNESS!!! Last night was the worst night (attempting to) sleep EVER! What was more like a massive migraine than a headached, kept me awake most of the night. The somewhat warm temperature in the room may have also contributed. After some Nurofen Plus and a cold shower, I headed down to breakfast and seeing Michael´s reaction at seeing me, I knew I did not look well. Once the Nurofen kicked in, I managed a few pieces of bread with cheese and a cup of coffee - tasty, International Roast! The slow and winding journey to Colca Canyon includes a 400 metre long tunnel with no lights and only able fit one vehicle across. The locals call it the Tunnel of Mystery - Tunnel of Death seems more in keeping ... read more

At last a hot bath :-))) Chivay has a hot springs where we soaked away the afternoon, fantastic, but maybe too much of a good thing, felt sick all evening :-( Tomorrow it's back to Arequipa to catch a bus to Cuzco. It's a bummer having to go back the way we came and it's made worse because the road to Cuzco comes back this way again - almost as far as where we are before heading in a different direction !!! but there is no way to avoid going down and back as the only buses from here go to Arequipa :-((( but can't be helped. ... read more

We were picked up around 7:30 and another couple from where we are staying are doing the same tour, Richard and Caroline from the UK who are back packing it for a year and have a few interesting stories. On the bus there are another seven of us, one young fellow from Oz, two young American fellows, three Peruvian, and another girl from the chec republic and all seem like a good bunch. Our guide is Marcello who is Peruvian and also speaks english which is a bonus and explains all the sites along the way. The trip heading out of town was good and an eye opener again, we did a number of stops to take in the scenery and to stock up on goodies from the shops, such as cocoa lollies, drinks and the ... read more
