Our second day in the Colca Canyon region was dedicated to exploring the valley and some of the towns founded in colonial Spanish times. Our first mission was to arrive at the Cruz del Condor Mirador early enough to catch the condors gliding with the help of thermal winds, so we set out early in the morning as the viewing site was some distance from the lodge. On the way, we did take some time to stop at the nearby village of Yanque, to watch some of the children dancing in the square, a morning tradition. Along the way, we passed other settlements that dot the valley. I was constantly surprised by the small size of a lot of the houses we passed. They seemed more like Hobbit holes than real houses. Also amazing was the ... read more

David here... Our next stop in Peru was Chivay. When we looked at places we wanted to go, Colca Canyon was high on the list, next after the Sacred Valley. On a map it looked a straightforward onward journey south from Cusco. However our research showed that the route was not 'normal' in Peru, most people going the other way round or going via Arequipa, which would mean back tracking. We found one tour company - 4M Express - that offered the Cusco to Chivay route on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (with the Chivay to Cusco journey going on Monday, Wednesday and Friday). We booked the journey with 4M about a month in advance at a cost of $60 each, so quite expensive. But this was a tour and not direct transport so you got ... read more

Today up 415 for a 5 am departure. The hotel packed us a small breakfast with a sandwich fruit water bottle and biscuits. Had a nap on the bus before our first stop where we ate. We were warned it was cold. It was more the cold it was freezing. I wore a tank, long sleeve Tshirt, fleece and my down jacket and it was still horrifically cold. Everyone went crazy buying beanies, scarves, gloves, socks and leg warmers from a lady who had a stall set up. As we were there super early only one was open and got all the business. One other poor lady was still trying to set up when we left so missed a lot of sales. We tried Inca Tea which helps with the altitude. I wasn't going to buy ... read more

The common denominator is down, way down, hours of just, down. But there were some other similarities... about half way along the Colca trail we started to see a crescent of green oasis at the bottom, and it reminded me of the view of Phantom Ranch as I'd descended the Kaibab Trail. And there were mules on the trail and a fair number of other hikers. The geology did not appear to be as interesting on the Colca, it lacks the layers of colored rocks that make the Grand Canyon so brilliant. Although there was a stunning rock outcrop that reminded me of the devils post-pile. The trail itself was in excellent shape, nicely constructed with lots of switchbacks. Bone dry so the main 'watch out' was slipping on loose grit and gravel, but no wet ... read more

15th of August, Day 3: Arequipa to Colca Canyon Chivay I have an apology for some of the odd words that have popped up in the blog - thanks to the predictive text. I also have an addition to make to yesterday's blog. Something I tried to forget. At one point, instead of being in the crowd we ended up on the road as the parade. We got a great reception from the crowd we were walking in front of. Well we thought we did but it was more Liz who was coming down the road behind the rest of us acting like a pork chop and doing a jig. We had an early start and were picked up at about 8:00 am. It took most of the day to travel the 160km from Arequipa to ... read more

From Arequipa we headed higher into the mountains to the town of Chivay, nestled in the hills at the base of the Colca Canyon there was one main reason for our visit – Condors! The Colca Canyon is claimed to be the deepest gorge in the world, it is certainly amazingly beautiful, vast Andean terraces tower up over the Canyon , dotted by tiny villages that haven’t changed in a century. The canyon is also renowned for its population of Condors, the following day we would be hiking into it to view them at close range, but first as dusk falls a visit to the thermal springs that lie on the outskirts of Chivay. Sitting in an open air pool, heated by thermal hot springs, gazing out at the mountains as the sun sinks behind has ... read more

Went on a two day tour from Arequipa. Saw some great scenery that we had missed before due to the overnight bus ride to Arequipa. The roads are very windy and and the land is very dessert-like with many cactus and volcanic rock strewn about. We were lucky to see wild Viccuna and learned about the differences between llama, alpaca, and viccunna. I didn't try the cocoa leaves (for atlitude) as I was worried they might make my stomach upset. We reached the highest point at 4900m! Here there are rocks stacked up as offerings to the gods. I got very light-headed and had to walk so slow and sit to take some breathers. But good news - I didn´t faint and land in the squat toilet :) I felt better as we descended to Chivay ... read more
