Spent another day trekking this time to Laguna Churup and getting prepared to start climbing Monday. Sunday was a day of rest and I hit the museum in Huaraz as well as caught some of the parade as it is the 36th Anniversary of something here. It has been a little cloudy here the last day or so and hoping that it is clear for the first summit attempt on Tuesday.... read more

Today was one of the best day hikes ever. Changed to do Laguna 69 as there were some hikers headed there. You have to travel 3 hours by transport first and then are dropped off at about 10,000 feet. You have to hike it from there about 6-7 miles one way but the reward is incredible. This is a clear blue green lake nestled at about 15,000 feet +. There are a few (very few) level places on the trail and the rest is zigzagging up some steep terrain. It takes about 4 hours up, two back and then the return ride which of course does not leave when you get there. Finally back in Huaraz and beat. Will post more tomorrow as I am doing a short trek just to keep working towards climatization. Today ... read more

Spent the day hiking the area of Huaraz. Great place and nice weather. Tomorrow it will be off to Laguna Churup which is supposed to be a 5 hour hike up from here and a couple of hours back. There were a lot of celebrations here today as you can see in the pictures. Not sure what they are celebrating This area is pretty warm during the day 70's even though you are at 10,000 feet. ... read more

Finally received my luggage after waiting two days and headed off to the bus. An eight hour bus trip did not sound exciting but Cruz del Sur bus lines did an excellent job. Comfortable, service and no problems. Arrived in Huaraz around 5 pm and drove by the local market that looks interesting. Tomorrow will be an aclimatization day walking around Huaraz so I hope to have great shots of the area and also the local market. Just a few pics today. A couple of last pictures before leaving Lima, a few on the bus of the mountains when reaching the area and a sunset shot from the top of Olaza's guesthouse. Nice place and away from the square so it is quiet.... read more

We had extended out time in Lima due to my bout of the flu and though I still wasn’t feeling great we decided it was time to move on. A spur of the moment decision had us booking a day bus for the eight hour trip north to the region of Peru which is home to 22 mountains over 6000 meters making it the highest mountain range in the world outside of the Himalayas. The region is known as the Cordilleras and includes Mt Huascaran at 6768 meters which is Peru’s highest point. It was a very scenic trip - first it followed the coastal highway - not particularly scenic as it was a sand desert, but interesting all the same. We passed many sad villages - hundreds of tiny shacks, without running water or electricity, ... read more

On our way up north we were unsure of our next stop but heard many good things about Huaraz so we decided to stop there. We arrived at six in the morning and were greeted by a tour guide/hostel worker. He provided us with a cheap hostel and on our way tried to get us to sign up for a four day trek tour that goes through the huge mountain pass of Cordillera Blanca. We were tired and ready for bed and not thinking very clearly we decided, why not. Turns outs it was a great desicion. We spent that day walking around Huaraz then relaxing in the thermal baths, getting ready for the big trek. Day 1- The first day we drove a couple hours until we reached the mountain range, then we started hiking ... read more

To continue my bombardment of blogging while I have the motivation... After a lovely catch up with my mum I decided to make a quick trip to Huaraz before the rainy season kicked in... or so I thought. One of the guy's from La Paz was already there and the girl I did the Colca Trek with was going so I hopped up there to try and meet them and trek together. It's the first time I've ever gone somewhere purely for one thing and I felt a little bad about not seeing or doing more. But with my time of just a week before some friends were returning to Lima, I went, I walked and I came back, sick, again. I could say more, but since this I've learnt a lot from a return to La ... read more

... read more
