The Lord has blessed us with so many new friends here. A couple of weeks before, we decided to get DirecTV. We actually have about 70 English speaking channels. Since we were going to be able to see the Super Bowl Game, we decided to have a party. Most of the people were from our church - Calvary Chapel Cuenca, but there were also some other Ecuadoriano friends that came. Debi prepared all the meat, although Pato, Ale, Braulio and his brother Boris and his girlfriend Mary, did most of the cooking. She even cut up the cheese so it could be put on the burgers (which were football shaped) so it looked like the laces. Regretfully, when put on while the burgers were still on the grill the cheese melted and you really couldn't tell ... read more

The day after our birthday party Braulio and Chanel decided they wanted to take us to see Chordeleg, a city about 45 minutes from Cuenca. Chordeleg is much smaller than Cuenca. They have a small square with a lot of shops (especially jewelry) and there are a few "Gringos" that live there. Braulio loved walking Maggie around on her lead, something you don't see too often here. Mostly the dogs just run free. It was a very nice ride, and a nice chance to see what is outside the city. But I must say, I was completely surprised with one thing that we saw. Most of you know that I drove large semi trucks in California for 17 years, before going back to the Air Force full-time (by way of the CA Air National Guard). The ... read more

First of all, I decided it was time to change our profile picture. A lot of people we knew when we started this blog last year would not recognize me now. Debi planned a birthday party for our friend Alejandra (Ale) and myself. My birthday was the 29th and Ale's was the 24rd. There is a 50 year difference in our ages. There was Pato, Ale and Danny, Chanel and Braulio, Debi and I, and a couple that are staying at Pat and Ale's AirBNB Hostel (I don't remember their names). Pato brought over his BBQ grill and cooked some ribs for us. Debi and Chanel prepared salads to go along with the meat. Wonderful gifts were given. There was a home made birthday cake, courtesy of my beautiful wife, complete with very tall candles that ... read more

We went to see the Cuenca Symphony tonight and it was really great. It was very unusual hearing Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall being played by a symphonic orchestra. One of the cello players was really getting into everything he played. Check out picture #17. The auditorium is rather small, but the sound is great. The best part of the whole thing is that the symphony is free. We are waiting to find out when they will be playing at the Cathedral. I can just imagine the acoustics there.... read more

Christmas morning came and we had Braulio and Chanel come over to exchange presents. We have become very close to them. Braulio started out as our driver. The first day we came to our house he came with Frank and Angie, who rented the house for us. By the time we could up to the house, which is two kilometers up a twisting dirt road, I realized I didn't know how to even get out of the area, much less get back to the house. So we exchanged phone numbers with him and started calling him the next day. We used him quite a bit, since we didn't know where the bus would take us. After about a week, we met his wife Chanel, who was about six months pregnant. She was very happy to meet ... read more

Yes, we actually had three things to do in one day. After the parade and lunch at John and Silvana's we went to Pato and Ale's home for dinner with them and their family. Braulio and Chanel joined us there. After dinner we all participated in a gift exchange that we had drawn names for about a week earlier. We have been so blessed with all of the Ecuadoriano families that the Lord has put in our paths. Pato speaks very little English, Ale practically none, and her mother and Pato's grandmother and cousins none at all. But it didn't make any difference. We all had a great time. Debi is not ignoring everyone by using her I-Pad, she is using the Translator.... read more

Our last day in Cuenca was spoiled when I had a run-in with an older man who I assume is the owner of the Carolina bookstore. I had been in the store a couple days before and received a swap credit of 3 US dollars for a large format paperback edition of Stephen King’s Storm of the Century. I had two more, large format paperback books to exchange (Wally Lamb’s I Know This Much Is True and The New Granta Book of Travel) and was looking forward to browsing and selecting something new to read. I handed the books to the young female Ecuadoran staff member who barely acknowledged me or the books. I browsed for a few minutes and then approached her again to ask how much credit I was allowed for the two books, ... read more

Okay, this one is a little out of order. Cuenca has a magnificent parade marking Christmas Eve. The guidebooks say it is the finest Christmas parade in Ecuador. Children from all the neighborhoods surrounding Cuenca decorate horses, donkeys, llamas, and vehicles with an abundance of food, tinsel, and colors. The children dress as Christmas figures or in highly ornamental indigenous clothing. There are bands and stereo systems that provide music as they walk from the outskirts of the center to the main plaza. This parade has both new and ancient roots. There used to be many small parades in the outlying areas of Cuenca. About 50 years ago, after a local woman brought a baby Jesus figure to Rome be blessed by the Pope, they brought them all together into one grand pageant following this "niño ... read more
