Today is our last official day in Quito. We met with our landlady at 5 pm and soon -- at 10 pm tonight -- we'll board a bus bound for the Ecuadorian jungle reserve, Cuyabeno (located in the northeastern part of Ecuador). Around 6 am Monday morning we'll arrive in a small jungle town called Lago Agrio. There we'll meet our guide who will take us down the river in a motorized canoe to our hut campsite. And then it's five days of monkeys, caimans and piranhas, oh my! :) We're all very, very exciting about our upcoming jungle adventure (as I'm sure you can imagine). I really want to see some large snakes. No, really, I do. (I also want to see a jaguar, but I guess the liklihood of that is really low, which ... read more

Yes, we did it, as you can see from the title. But we´ll get there in a minute. We left Mindo, and made our way to Cayambe, a town north of Quito, on the way to Otavalo. We found out about a hacienda we could stay at outside of Cayambe, and tried our luck without a reservation. Luckily, they had an open room. It´s a splurge for the trip at $35 a night, but it was worth it. The Hacienda Guachala was built in 1580, and has hosted many dignitaries and presidents in its time. It became a hotel in the 1990s for the public. Our room had its own fireplace, and walls that were about 3 feet thick. It had its own restaurant and we were able to charge everything - bonus! It was a ... read more

Dia de los Muertos. I fell asleep last night with flutters of anticipation in my stomach. This morning it required a great deal of patience to sit through my Spanish lesson without fidgeting. I don't know how to adequately describe the anticipation I felt; all I can say is that it wasn't the anticipation a child has on Christmas Eve or the night before their birthday. This was a holiday that went beyond any holiday I had experienced in the U.S. I wasn't quite sure what to expect -- what I would see, how I would feel. I'm still not quite sure I can give today justice, but I will try. Around 10 am I boarded a van with five Vida Verde students, four Vida Verde profesores, Brenna and Ami to head for a cemetery in ... read more

Ami has loaded more pictures on the web -- check 'em out! There are certainly some gems in there :) All is good in da hood. My Spanish profesora this week is fantastic; I'm studying los verbos imperfectos right now and she seems way more concerned with making sure I not only know how to conjugate the verbos correctly but that I completely understand how and when to use said verbos. Yesterday, after we chatted about what I did the day before and she had corrected mi tarea, she handed me the white board marker and told me to explain what I had learned on Monday. Whew. After the initial panic attack, I realized that I was fairly confident that I could correctly show her what I learned. I know I would not have felt that ... read more

I would kill for a hot dog. Normally I don't have quite such crazy carnivorous cravings. But on my walk to and from school I pass a row of venders selling candy, newspapers, etc. and among these venders is a man selling hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixins'. And I realize that to eat one of those hot dogs would most certainly be the death of me. But I really want one. em ... read more

Happy One Month Ecuador Anniversary to us! :) We celebrated in style today -- I made very soft, no-bake, vegan peanut butter cookies with chocolate frosting, (the oven doesn't have a temperature gauge and besides, we're still terrified we're going to blow the house up), we ate fried green plantains, (which taste more like potatoes than bananas, by the way), and, well, that was about it. Our routine hasn't changed very much since the last time I updated you on our riveting daily activities. I'm still taking Spanish classes at Vida Verde, but much to my dismay (and probably to the dismay of my professors, too) my Spanish is still rather poor. And that's putting it delicately. There seems to be a connection missing in my brain between what I learn on paper and what comes ... read more

OK, OK, OK... That's probably being very harsh on this probably very wonderful country & anyone who's been there is surely cursing me right now for this outrageous headline. The truth is I am still missing Colombia and its people tremendously. You all know the feeling... You go on a great holiday for a few weeks, have a wonderful time somewhere, maybe drinking & dancing & tanning, you come back home and soon you have to go to work... Then those horrible gut-wrenching holiday blues kick in. And it's like someone's punched you in the stomach and you are winded, unable to breath freely. Well, that's how I feel after leaving Colombia. And it's seriously impairing my judgement of Ecuador I am afraid. The crazy thing being that I am still ON holiday and not ... read more

It felt so great to hear the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, it's such an important mitzvah. However, spending Shabbat Shuvah with 40,000 screaming, chanting Ecuadorians probably is not a mitzvah. I have been in Quito three times now in the past ten days. First for Rosh Hashana and now for Yom Kippur and on Saturday I saw Ecuador tie Uruguay and win an invitation to the World Cup. It is only the second time in history that Ecuador has gone to the World Cup and everywhere before the game people were shouting "!Si se puede¡" (yes can) I have definitely learned that "Si se puede", all it takes is a trip to the grocery store. On Erev Rosh Hashanah I came to Quito defeated. I had tried e-mails and phone calls but couldn't find a Jewish ... read more

Today Brenna, Ami and I hiked -- crawled, rather -- up a steep, cobblestone street west of Carolina Park to the Fundación Guayasamín, a museum housing some of Guayasamin's work as well as his collection of pre- and post-colonial artifacts. Once inside the museum grounds the sounds of the city vanished and as we walked between and within the buildings it was as if we were miles outside Quito. We viewed the pre-colonial (500 a.c. - 1500 d.c.) artifacts first -- a hundred or so stone clay pots, figurines, bowls and few sacrificial altars. It made me wish my Spanish was better so I could both understand our museum guide and ask her questions as my knowledge of pre-colonial Ecuador is limited. The artifacts were fascinating nonetheless. From there we moved onto Guayasamín's work. It was ... read more
