I made it to that museum (Museo del Banco) in the end, the one that was closed last time. It was ace, with loads of wicked pottery and gold and also some art that was a bit more boring. I made the mistake of going at 12, without having had lunch. At about 1, I looked up from the display cases with a rumbling stomach and realised I was only about a fifth of the way through the first room of five. I quickly became more discerning in what was allowed to hold my attention to finish off the rest of the whole thing in another hour. Then the next day I did more mountain biking, down from 4500m up Cotopaxi Volcano. It was great fun and the views were something special. Just not long enough ... read more

For the first few days of my Galapagos trip, my internal monologue was really pretty boring, going something like this: "Oh my god, this is so amazing. Oh my god, this is so amazing. Oh look, another one, even closer. Oh my god, there are about fifty more over there. Oh my, this is so amazing. ... ... Oh my god, I feel so ill. Oh my god, I feel so ill. I think I´m going to throw up. I feel so ill ... ... Oh my god, this is so amazing. Oh look, there´s a baby one. This is so amazing..." I think maybe you got the drift of this from my mid-trip entry. Anyway, I saw so many incredible animals. They´re crawling all over your feet practically. Heaped on top of each other. Not ... read more

Los Amigos de Quito and multilingual tongue twisters We came to Ecuador expecting to pop our heads in the door and leave soon afterwards, but somehow have managed to spend a month or more here! Before leaving England we had an offer of accommodation from Nancy and Christina who live in London and who also have an apartment in the capital, Quito. And so we find ourselves on a flight, clutching a piece of paper onto which we have carefully copied their address. The taxi driver seems to know where he is heading and in no time we come to the gates of the housing estate in which Nancy and Christina have their apartment. Security formalities dispensed with, the gates are opened, the taxi drives in and we meet our new neighbours Soledad and Eistein and ... read more

Bright and early tomorrow morning, I´ll be hailing a cab to take me to the airport, clutching my binoculars and butterfly catching net. (I wish I had either of these, it would make me look so much more authentic. I´d like to do the whole thing in the style of a 19th century lady naturalist, actually, with fifteen men to carry my boxes of captured animals, and a parasol.) I have ludicrously high hopes for the trip. I´m expecting it to be more successful than my last couple of days of tourism, at the very least. Yesterday was a bit of a flop, you see. I´m exagerating; I went round the cathedral, La Compania and another church whose name escapes me, all of which were stunning. I also did loads of walking round the pretty Old ... read more

Well, school's out for me and, if the truth be told, I haven't actually achieved complete fluency. I still get people asking me if maybe I spent some years out of Ecuador as a child and that sort of thing. And I guess it may deteriorate to the point that when any of you see me again I know just a little bit more than the average traveller and have to rummage round in my notebook or dictionary for most words and tenses. Straight from school on Friday night, I went to the bottom of a volcano near Quito with four others (including one weird German guy who gave the rest of us something to talk about whenever he was out of the room or lagging behind or just facing the other way). The Germans (because ... read more

Being a four-hour-a-day student takes up more time than you'd think. You might think it would take fur hours a day, leaving twenty free. But somehow it's not like that. There's homework, of course , but also when you're engaged from 11-3, it's hard to do much either before or after. So I haven't. I only made it into Quito Old Town for the first time today. I went to a church. There are lots of them here. And just now I tried to go to a Basilica, but it was closed. So I had an ice-cream instead. I bought it from a street vendor. I'm so confident of my stomach these days that I've started buying food from street vendors, which had been the last bastion of my nutrional virtue. Maybe it will all catch ... read more

Like a mentalist, I have enrolled for five four-hour Spanish lessons, on five consecutive days. Four hours in a row! One on one, so no sitting back and thinking about netball/lunch/my cat. I started yesterday and I´m due there in twenty minutes. She´s going to test me. I was learning verbs in bed at 7.30 this morning. Oh my goodness. Don´t worry anyone, I´ve already made, ooh, four friends. We´re going to watch an FA cup type football match on Sunday. How nice. My hostal owner guy really has taken a shine to be, btw. Whenever I come in, he engages me in conversation (in Spanish, might I add) about how my room is, and how he´s going to get the carpenter to sort out the lock on the bathroom door (which works, but is just ... read more

I´d just about cracked it on the cold bus journeys by the time I got back to La Paz on Friday morning. I wore three pairs of socks, three pairs of trousers, eight top half layers, gloves, hat, two hoods and I wrapped my grey blanket (alas, now abandoned in La Paz) round me so I was like a mummy. I also had a fat local woman sitting next to me, which helped, although I could have done without her laughing - and getting all her friends to laugh - at me for how much more I payed for the bus ticket than them. Only my feet got cold. A taxi driver was offering 8 Bs minimum to take me into town, so I decided to walk. That was a stupid idea. I had all my ... read more

We started this trip in Ushuaia at the end of the world. Now, after four months, we´ve finally reached the middle of the world. On the 13th, we visited the Mitad del Mundo monument north of Quito. It is a super-touristy "mini-city". But we went to take pictures on the equator. Yes, we took an hour long bus ride to take pictures of an imaginary line. Very cheesy, we know. But we figured, "When´s the next time we´re going to be this close to the equator?" The next day (a Thursday), we headed for Otavalo to beat the hoards of other tourists that would be pouring in for the famous Saturday market. This also gave us a couple extra days to shop. We knew at the beginning of our South American travels that we´d be here ... read more
