ok i have like two minutes to post this before i have to disconnect. here are entries from my first few days in quito. sorry it's a lot! only read if you want. June 5 Hi to everyone. Well I am safe and sound here in Quito after 24 hours of travel, more or less, a lost debit card (very very bad me), and a few instances where I wanted to do serious harm to certain airport personnel. But overall it was an uneventful trip and I am taking in my first day in Ecuador. We arrived late last night and were greeted with many hugs and much excitement from our host families. I was, as I always am, sort of taken aback by the amount of Spanish I actually know, and fully embarrassed by simple ... read more

It was Saturday and our host in Quito, Byron, took us out for the day. He brought along Angela. We took a metro bus out to the last stop past the airport. We changed to a bus for Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world .. ie. the equator). The entire journey of 1.5 hours cost only 35 cents. Always nice to have a local showing you the way. Basically the middle of the world is a big complex of tourist traps. Still it had a funny kind of charm. Got some great views from the top of the monument in the middle. There were lots of buildings containing art and exhibitions. There was a really interesting exhibition about the space station in French Guiana.. reckon we should go there. And another about an ... read more

It’s….a lame duck? The hike through the Mindo Cloud Forest takes my breath away with its beauty, and the water of Cascada Nambillo takes my breath away with its icy chill. The hike itself follows a dirt and gravel road up the mountainside until it branches off and heads down the slope towards the river. Red and purple impatiens cover the riverbanks, providing an splash of color in amongst the leafy green foliage. The songs of the birds fill the air, but I hear more than I can see. It is a tranquil place, interrupted only by our laughter and stories as we make our way upward and by the occasional Chevrolet hauling wet tourists back down the road toward the city. This area is so different from the other parts of Ecuador that we’ve been. ... read more

One salsa class later and I am ready to take on the locals...or maybe not...the natural rhythm they build up over the years is just impossible to learn overnight! Ohh well, was good fun nonetheless. Headed up to the Mariscal after for dinner at Mongo- a mongolian all you can eat place for $5, can´t go too far wrong really!! Had a few more drinks before jumping in taxis home. Lessons on Thursday were uneventful, although only 2 girls turned up to the later class....do we think my lessons are no good? Think I may be making them work too hard, but they´ve gotta be able to talk in the past tense!! Its essential!! Ohh well, Friday Paula, Kirsty and I headed up the Teleferica, which is basically a big cable car up one side ... read more

Hey, just back in quito for the day to get some cash, even though its a 2 1/2 hour bus journey from mindo it seems to be the closest placve with a cash machine. New place is much better, being an old hostal, its like luxury compared to our last place. The ride there was pretty horrific, rode in the back of a truck for 7 hours along some of the bumpiest roads in the world...not pleasant. Also didnt eat from about 8 in the morning untill about 6ish. But when we got there was well nice, we managed to get one of the rooms with en suite.....sorted!!! Woke up in the moring to find the ther were 3 humming bird feeders outside our window and basically theres hummingbirds constanly around. aimee has spent quite a ... read more

Well, rumors swirled the other weekend about the fact that we may only have to teach on Monday (to celebrate ¨Day of the Teacher¨ we got a week off, go figure), and as a result I proposed heading off for some hiking on a backcountry backpacking trip. Several foolhardy volunteers expressed interest, figuring this may be a good idea and that I know what I´m doing. The rumors (about not having class, not about me knowing what I´m doing) proved true and on Wednesday I headed to Quito to: rent tents, hire a pickup to the starting point and obtain the appropiate maps, then we planned to meet as a group Thursday at the bus station. Unsuprisingly, Thursday morning came, and I had: no tents, no driver and unwittingly only two thirds of the maps needed. ... read more

Woke up bright and early to jungle birdsong which is really quite odd after Cuenca and Quito. Still, got up and went in search of, what else, breakfast - we seem to do a hell of a lot of eating here. Then off into town as a group of ten now having adopted Matt, Emily and Froydis to get ready for tubing. This involved having a pickup truck with giant rubber doughnut rings strapped on top of it. As we couldn't all fit in the truck we had to sit under it until our guide suggested we sit on top of the rings. Well, we thought 'sure, why not' and did so after a little difficulty getting up. Really started to worry that he had been joking when we realised that they weren't strapped on ... read more

Well we arrived in Mindo and on the recommendation of the Quito gals (thanks guys!) made our way to La Casa de Cecilia which was a really cool wood lodge with a deck fulll of hammocks (always the most important consideration when choosing a hostal!) Went out for lunch and then came back to chill and met three other backpackers staying there, Matt from Oxford, Emily from San Francisco and Froydis from somewhere unpronouncable in Norway. Had a relaxed afternoon before finally dragging ourselves out to do something - which turned out to be visiting an orchid farm. Well, got to be done when you're in a country that has over a quarter of a million species really and it was quite interesting in the end. Had dinner and then our visits got even weirder ... read more

Zut alors, I´ve been away for so long! OK, once again forgive me for typos because I have a lot to type and a wonky teeth keyboard to type it on...So last week was pretty much business as usual. Mornings were spent at Ab Linc escuela, mainly teaching La Bamba and Clementine. I´m not quite sure how the latter is supposed to help the children learn anything at all, as the words that we were given didn´t even make sense in English. Seriously, "light she has like a fally/folly (not sure about that one, couldn´t read the teacher´s writing but I don´t think it made sense either way)/and her shoes were number nine/herring boxes without topses/sandals were for Clementine". Say WHAT?! In the afternoons I´ve been working at CENIT, and on Monday I began my first ... read more
