so we had enough of the big city and took off for mindo, ecuador about 2.5 hours from quito. mindo is a tiny town, of about 2000 people, set in a cloud forest. it is beautiful- mountains covered in lush green vegetation, and tons of butterflies and birds. on our first day in mindo, we went to the mariposario (butterfly farm). we took a stroll around and snapped lots of photos. the next day we walked about an hour north of mindo to do some hiking. to access the park, you first have to ride on a terabita (cable car) strung high across the forest, from one side of the gorge to the other. we then did a good bit of hiking, checking out some waterfalls (which included the crossing of several questionable bridges). that night, ... read more

Hi All, We are in Mindo, a small village about 2 hours from Quito. Mindo is lower than Quito, and so it has tropical cloud forest (which means it´s almost a jungle - lots of trees, plants, birds and insects). We came here yesterday, had a nice hike where we saw lots of butterflies, and slept in a very nice hostel, 5 minutes walk outside of town, almost in the middle of the jungle. Today we went to see some waterfalls, outside of town. You get there by crossing a valley on a thing which is almost a sky tram, but not quite. It´s an open box, where you sit while crossing. The waterfalls were very lovely, and we had a nice hike. Today we are going to start to head south towards Peru. We´re supposed ... read more

The directions to the Bellavista Reserva were as follows- Take a bus from Quito towards Mindo. After about 2 hours, there will be a small town called Nanegalito. Ask the bus driver to let you off near the falafel stands. Then ask around town for a truck to rent. They should be able to diect you to a driver that is willing to take you up the last 12 bumpy kilometers to Bellavista. Needless to say, I was a little anxious as to how this may work out, especially since it was our first excursion out of Quito. But getting to the beautiful Bellavista Reserva ended up being pretty simple. I asked the bus helper (every bus in Ecuador has a driver and a helper on the bus. He yells out the names of the towns, ... read more

Hello again everyone. Im desperately trying to catch up on my blogs as Im a week behind so I apologise for the sudden influx of information. I also must apologise for the terrible spelling and grammer. I have just read over my previous entries and Im beginning to think I should work on my English before I even venture close to Spanish!! I will say , however, that these flipping keyboards are a nightmare, dispite all keys being marked as normal, your very unlikely to find a keyboard with the right caracters on the right buttons...a very cunning way to keep your customers on the internet as long as possible!!! On Friday I decided to head to the equator with my amigos. I was not that interested in this trip really , but I guess you ... read more

As part of my trip to Ecuador, I was taking 20 hours of one-on-one Spanish lessons. During one of the lessons, my instructor, Santi (same instructor as I had during my last trip to Ecuador), mentioned that he and some other people from the hostel were going to Mindo for the weekend and staying at the hostel that he is currently building (his main expertise is in tourism) and he invited me along. We left Friday afternoon... me, Santi, Ralph, Rene, and Allison. Ralph and Rene were from Germany and Allison from Canada. We were going to take the trolley bus to the bus station, but it was too crowded (literally, we couldn't fit on the bus), so we took two cabs. At the bus station, we found out that the Quito-Mindo bus was sold-out... on ... read more

Mindo Me and Miriam as we had our friends car for the weekend decided to take a trip to Mindo a small town about an two hours or so outside of Quito. There you can do various things like tube rafting, cable sliding and swim at the different waterfalls on the river Nambillo. First we had some lunch after the drive steak apanada (breaded) for around three dollars and a huge plate at that! So after lunch we (I) decided to take a walk to the River to see whats up. Along the way we saw various groups ready with protective helmet and life saver to take on the tame rapids of the Rio Nambillo. Moving on we continued to climb the hill to find the waterfalls which as the sign indicated were around two miles ... read more

Feliz fiesta del sol! Happy midsummer! This year I finally got to celebrate midsummer as I've always felt intrigued to do. Thursday was the big midsummer festival, known as Inti Raymi, in Quito. Most of the festival was held in the center of the city and consisted of performances by school children in the indigenous communities, crafts, and music. The performances were all so great, and one girl did a monologue about the exploitation of the indigenous people in the Andes since the time of the Spanish conquest that nearly had all of us in tears. That night, Alicia took me back to a smaller Inti Raymi celebration sponsored by Quito Para Todos and some other people I can't remember. It took place in a park, where someone lit a fire and we all danced around ... read more

ok I swear, I am all caught up after this. so no more double entry days! love you all! June 9 This weekend we are staying at a lodge in the subtropical rainforest near a little touristy town called Mindo. I can't quite believe I'm in a rainforest! We've spent this weekend hiking and taking in all the nature we possibly can before returning to Quito tomorrow. I can't quite believe I've gone hiking in the subtropics, isn't that wild? Yesterday was the biggest adventure I've had hiking. Though in Spanish the forest is called "bosque nublado" or "cloud forest", it quickly became apparent that it is more rainy than cloudy. About an hour into our two-hour hike, we walked right into a downpour. Even with the huge canopy of trees overhead, the rain soaked us ... read more
