There is nothing I enjoy more on a Monday night than Jenga and a Pilsener. This night in particular was very special. As we moved on from Pilseners to margaritas, we changed the game from Jenga to "Ultimate Jenga". Once the tower falls, you must rebuild it in the most creative way possible. One margarita later it was every man for himself, and we each built our own towers. One more margarita has us building towers to support our drinks. I think I won for best tower, take a look...... read more

This "game" as you might call it, I agreed to participate in before I really understood the rules. All participants stand in a circle and take turns flipping a coin. Heads you stay in, and tails you are out. You keep going by the process of elimination until there is only one person left. Before the flipping began, the dumbest dare was established. The winner (or loser, if you will) would then have to do the dare that was established. I had beginners luck, and won the dare to bounce a basketball all day, everywhere I went. Good thing I had been up late the night before, and ended up sleeping most of the day. I definatly learned it is a good conversation starter. ... read more

As many of you may know (some more than others --MOM!) I have one pair of black flip flops that I absolutly can´t part with. I think they were given to me as a birthday gift by Kim Glofcheskie in gr.9. They have been EVERYWHERE with me. Worn almost completely through the sole and the white design completely faded. They slipped away quietly tonight, finally giving up and breaking. They were put to rest on the wall of the popular Polo´s Bar, where hangs other noble shoes. May they rest in peace...... read more

Today was vaccination day on San Cristobal. We loaded up the ambulance jeep with syringes, vacines, and alchohol swabs. Once the children caught wind of us in our white lab coats they began screaming and slamming doors. I felt a little bit bad as we called out their names one by one, and they slowly made their way to the front of the class. The boys flinched and the girls cried. It was a very traumatic day for everyone. ... read more

This seafood dish (pronounced suh-vee-chay) is very popular on the Galapagos Islands. It is a soupy mixture made from onions, peppers, tomatoes, some type of seafood, and lime, lemon, and orange juice. The most common types are "ceviche con pescado" (fish ceviche) and "ceviche con langosta" (lobster ceviche)... read more

When something is native to Ecuador, I like to think of a creative name to refer to it as... because i can´t remember the real name most of the time. For example, "EcuaShoes" are the Ecuadorian crocs, popular among women of all ages. If bought in the absolute perfect size, they can be very comfortable. However, don´t expect to wear them for more than a month. You will get your $6.50 out of them, but not much else. "EcuaCheese" is one of the few (if not only) type of cheese in Ecuador. It has a slightly rubbery consistency, and tastes like a mixture of babybel and camabert. Apparently it is common for tourists to quickly grow sick of the cheese, but I just can´t get enough of it! "EcuaToast" is the exact same as our toast, ... read more

This is probably one of the most commonly known and easily recognized bird on the Galapagos Islands. They can be found in large amounts diving head first into the water to catch fish. During mating season the male booby will strut past a female and show off his blue feet. T-shirts stating “I Love Boobies” can be found in every size and colour all over the islands, and are a popular buy for tourists. ... read more

These birds are most commonly found near harbours on most of the islands. They are very graceful when they fly, and have feeding habits similar to the blue footed booby (diving for fish). The Galapagos Pelican is one of the biggest birds found in the islands, however one of the smallest in the pelican family.... read more

Today at the hospital I had the opportunity to scrub into a cesarean section. There were five of us in the room, and I was able to be right at the young mother’s bedside. Beforehand her family had asked me to snap some pictures after the birth, so I was excited to have a task at hand. I lucked out in the end though and got to help the nurse clean the newborn’s eyes, ears, and nose after he was born. It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of the first few hours of this child’s life. The most rewarding part was going into the waiting room and showing the pictures I had taken of the anxious family’s newest addition. ... read more
