I still have two more cities to catch up on in the blog, but I have to write really quickly about our day today because I fell in love with Colombia today and I'm still on a high from it. First of all, we have been in Medellin for nearly a week now and it is, hands down, the best big city we've been to yet. It's great for so many reasons, but I will go into that more when I blog about Medellin. Right now I need to write about the area that surrounds Medellin, for Medellin is in the department (which is their name for a state, province, etc.) of Antioquia. And Antioquia is definitely the most breathtakingly beautiful department of Colombia. The plants are the greenest green you'll ever see, the flowers are ... read more

I'd been told by three different people that Piedra del Peñol (a giant rock that bears a striking resemblance to Rio de Janeiro's Sugar Loaf Mountain and lies about 2 hours east of Medellín) and Guatapé (a town approximately 3km from the rock) are well worth checking out. Martha had organised a "carro particular" (not a particular car but a private car) to take me there with her family. Nice - a family outing. Travelling alone has many benefits but it's nice to have good company occasionally. Total cost for hiring the car and driver for the day was about £50 - a bit steep, but then not at all pricey when you consider what it would cost to go by taxi. Then plan was to go to the rock, then to Guatapé and then to ... read more

Bus 5491 to Medellin "‘We went through the guard rail. Everybody up top was screaming,’ the 14-year-old said in a telephone interview from his home in Vancouver, Washington. 'I had no idea what was going on until we impacted. The first 20 minutes of the trip, we're flying down a dirt road going about 75 or 80 miles per hour,' he said. ‘I opened the window to show my friend Mark, and we were both wide-eyed, going like, 'Wow!’ The teenager's spleen was removed and surgeons repaired his perforated stomach and punctured lung after the crash on a narrow, winding highway. His mother suffered more than a dozen broken bones, shattered when the seats broke free and sailed through the cabin. Her other son helped her from the wreckage." The Washington Post, April 9, 2006. ... read more

I am in love with Antioquia. Ok, first I will begin with Friday. Friday was mine and Sascha's first day teaching by ourselves. We taught the older kids in the morning, organized and planned our behinds off, and then we each had really long one on one lessons in the afternoon. I worked with Luisa, who is a wonderfully kind and cooperative 13 year-old with striking green eyes that you cannot help but get drawn into. During this lesson, I would say that Luisa taught me as much Spanish as I taught her English, and we developed a trust and a relationship through laughing and being patient with each other. After our day was over, I hung out at the foundation for about an hour. During that hour, Leidy, a 7 year-old, came over and sat ... read more

After leaving Salento in the early hours we headed off towards the city of Medellin. Again yet another endless windy road was our path and again we were witness to amazing scenery as we made our way north. It seemed today that the hills were even greener, steeper and more magical then I had seen before in Colombia. By this time my patience for taking long bus rides was waining and with 2 hours to go to Medellin I couldn't sit still in my seat, so when we did arrive on the city outskirts I was pretty damned happy. Medellin is situated in in a valley and surrounded by lush mountains that also harbour quaint pueblos or towns. The town was founded in 1675 and in it's early days consisted mostly of individual haciendas that later ... read more

The following day we took a bus to a small town outside of Medellin called Guatape. It was about 1.5 hour ride long. Guatape is a lake community with beautiful homes, small farms and big rock call El Penol, which is a 200 feet and it stands out. Guatape was once a home for Pablo Escobar and his whole Medellin Cartel. After Pablo Escobars death, the FARC spread their operations into this area. Later on the Colombian government sent troops to drive the FARC and the rest guerrilla forces back to the dense forest. There are soldiers around to keep the area safe for the people and tourists. We rode on horses, hiked up the El Penol. It was about 650 stairs. As you can see from my photos, the view was very beautiful. We had ... read more
