Sunday 26th Feb - Bucaramanga to San Gil In the morning before leaving I had a quick walk though town in search of some breakfast for us and was pleasantly surprised to see a nice, clean, orderly city. Something that wasn't a common occurence in central america. On the contrary to what I and I'm sure most people imagine of Colombia, the streets felt really safe and the place felt very civilised and not too disimilar to what you'd find in Spain. We got a taxi back to the bus terminal and 3 hours later after a minibus ride through the picturesque mountains which signal the start of the Andes and we were in San Gil, perched in a valley on the road to Bogota. We went with a lonely planet recommendation and were very pleased ... read more

Alrighty so I just want to start this off and say a few things. Thank you to my Momma, Grandma, and Washington College for making this trip possible. It is sure to be a great time! I was in Peru from August 2011 until December 2011 for the fall semester equvilent at WAC. Well yesterday I was suppost to take my flight at 3:30pm to Bogota by 9pm. From there have a 45 minute layover and leave to Lima at 10:30pm. As I have found out, flights with Avianca don't really follow any kind of schedule. My original flight was an hour late. They assured us that we would still make the connection flight in Bogota (How? I don't know). But of course we missed it. I met a pretty lady named Ana who was also ... read more

Well after a 10 Hour combined flight and quite of Bit of turbulance about 30 minutes out of Bogota, which I honestly thought the wings were going to rip off and I was going to spiral in an unconscious state jeans soiled from both ends to my death, I made it just after 12am. Customs was a breeze and the ONLY hiccup would have to be AeroMexo cutting 2 of the 3 TSA locks off my bag along with the rings on the zippers but I didnt see anything missing which I'll probably realize a month down the road like I did when they took my camera out of my bag from Mexico to Costa Rica, but it is what it is I guess no sense in crying about it. Anyways I booked a Hostel I ... read more

We arrive in Bogotá airport 40 minutes late. Edgar from Explore Bogota, is waiting for us www.explorabogota.com/index_english.html. We had only one day in the city so I decided to book a tour. I wanted to learn as much as possible about the city in a very short time. I had read about Edgar on the internet. He has great reviews on tripadvisor.com so two weeks before our departure I contract him and worked out two tours. He picks us up at the airport and takes us to the hotel to drop off our stuff (Hotel looks great!) We start with the City Tour. He drives us part way up a hill in the city. We exit and go a building where we catch a swiss style gondola that climbs to Convent Monserrate. From here, ... read more

Geo: 4.60987, -74.082La Candelaria. Montserrate. Usaquen. The Salt Cathedral at Zipaquira. Guatavita. Bogota and its surrounding areas have so many things to offer the traveler, it's difficult to decide what to see and do. So of all those wonderful activities, we decided to go shopping instead. Huh? Shopping? Why? How? WTF???Tonight's plan is for a Calgary reunion of sorts, having a couple groups of friends that happen to be traveling through South America at the same time as us, one flying home from Bogota in a few days and one I managed to guilt into convince to meet us in Bogota. Andres Carne de Res is a fairly famous Bogota institution - a steakhouse earlier in the evening, before morphing into a nightclub later, a perfect venue for tonight's reunion. Bogota. Population 7.8 million. Colombia’s capital and a city that conjures up images of adventure. The final stop on our four-city, whirlwind, two-week tour. Bogota was unlike any of the other cities we visited, a place that marches to its own beat. After settling in, the first order of business was to adjust to the altitude as the city sits right in the Andes; at 2,625 metres, it’s third highest in South America. For the first day or two this meant drinking lots of water as we were constantly parched, though cervezas or vino tinto (red wine) were largely out of the question. To have any more was to invite a 12-hour headache. We stayed in an area of the city known as La Candelaria, an older part of the city where the Congress, City Hall, ... read more

Bogota. What a city! Up in the Andes with fog and rain and chilly weather, but a wonderful European feel in the tourist district known as the Candelaria. A walk around the Candelaria district offers a wonderful mix of colonial architecture combined with a surprising amount modern street art. A particular artist, DJLu, has a lot of prominent stencil art which is thought provoking and fun. Much of our time in Bogota passed by wandering the cobblestone streets, hiding from the rain under the store front awnings, and tucking into some wonderful food at the many fabulous cafes and restaurants that the city has to offer. The local afternoon snack of "onces" was a favorite of ours. it consists of hot dark chocolate, bread and cheese but the trick is how you eat it; you break ... read more
