Wednesday - 31 October - Today i took a 5 hour bike tour of the city. It renewed my enthusiasm. It was an excellent insight into the history of Bogota. We visited a coffee factory, a fruit market the size of two football pitches, a cemetery, the red light district, the abortion zone, sampled street food, i even hung upside down on some graffitti (apparently it's what the kids do, not bad for an old bird, still your flexible friend!). I even made a new friend, captain Jack the Llama. It was hallow's eve and the city was thriving for it. Everyone was dressed up, especially the little kids. When we got back to the hostel someone had broken out the rum and people were chatting about what they would dress up as. I hadn't intended ... read more

Monday - 29 October - touch down in Bogota, Columbia and jumped into a yellow cab to the Cranky Croc hostel, despite it's name, not run by an aussie, come to think of it i never did meet the owner just a series of hostel workers some columbian some other nationalities!! the cab driver was quirky maybe too old to be driving because when i spotted Monserrate in the distance and pointed, he pulled over to make sure he answered 'yes' correctly, this wouldn't have been too bad on a normal road, but we were on the freeway and he had stopped on the fork of a junction off it, much to the confusion and annoyance of all the other cars on the road, it would have been an instant fail in the driving test. i ... read more

When I was a kid, I remember my dad spending quite a bit of time in Colombia. For those of you that don’t know, at that time he worked for Baker Hughes which is where I started my career. It’s too bad he didn’t have a blog back then because, like me, he also traveled internationally quite frequently and came back home with great recounts of his adventures abroad. Colombia back then was a much different place. I remember he told me that he used to carry two passports; his government issued US document and a fake Canadian version just in case he was kidnapped (sorry, Canadian friends, but at the time, you Canucks commanded less ransom potential). He told me about how on the front page of the Bogotá newspaper they had a daily count ... read more

Our trip over from Venezuela to Bogota was eventful. We took the bus from Merida to San Cristobal. We arrived in the dark at around 8pm, jumped straight into an old Chevvy taxi and headed for the border. After paying the rip-off departure tax to leave Venezuela, we arrived in Cucuta on the border at around 9.30pm and took the overnight bus to Bogota. Our bus driver was a typical SA bus driver - overtaking in the rain on blind bends etc only this driver wasn't so lucky as his antics caused an oncoming truck to swerve off the road into the embankment. Our driver carried on as though nothing had happened but was later stopped by the police and escorted back to the scene of the accident. This resulted in a frustrating 2 hour delay ... read more

Hi all, I've been in Colombia for well over a week now so it seems like a good time for an update. I arrived in the capital city, Bogotá, around 5am on Thursday 14th after a couple of overnight flights from New Orleans via Houston. After attempting (and failing) to extract some Colombian pesos out of the ATM machine with my card in Bogotá, I took a taxi to my hostel which was located in La Candelaria, the old historic centre of the city. I hadn't slept on the flights, so after dumping my bags I promptly fell asleep and continued to sleep for most of the day. When I finally got going, I checked my emails and found one from my parents letting me know that they'd had a call from Natwest Fraud department regarding ... read more

hi all! it's about 8 pm here in bogota on saturday evening. we had a reallllly long day yesterday, so we're taking it easy right now and having a cerveza in the hotel room before getting a good nights rest. the flight from LAX to houston yesterday was delayed for 2 hours, we sat in the plane as the inspected a faulty windshield and awaited paperwork from engineers allowing us to proceed with the flight (or switch planes, which fortunately we didn't have to do). but that 2 hour delay made us miss our connecting flight from houston to bogota. thankfully, there was a later flight to bogota, but it didn't leave until midnight, and we spent a good 8 hours milling around the houston airport. so we arrived at our hotel about 7 am this ... read more

Webby here...Apart from our trip down G bar nostalgia lane, catagena was not that great as G describes "a Carribean Blackpool without the candy floss", more like crack pool, judging by the vagrants that wander the shore lines. With this tingling in our minds, we left the murky shores and cast iron statues behind, much like the slaves that were freed there all those years ago and set sail (via a bus) to pastures newer, and greener, and as we were to find out, colder...Bogota, the Colombian capital was to be our destination, a hive of activity, fuelled with peace rally's, markets, cheap food and accommodation and McDonald's, which has still escaped my grasp despite my longing for a quarter pounder, they even tease me with an advert, played constantly on the television out here, it ... read more

We took a bus from Quito to Bogota, Colombia, which was an excruciating 23 hours. Upon arrival, we went to the hotel that Lonely Planet had reccomended, but it sucked, was noisy, and had no hot water. After some exploring the next morning, Justin found a new place around the corner, still in the rustic district called Candelaria. Our new hostel, Casu, has incredibly friendly and helpful staff, and through their reccomendations we discovered much about Bogota. We had heard about a salt cathedral in a nearby town, but were unsure of how great we would find it, after the spectacular Salar de Uyuni and the salt hotels there. One of the hotel workers persuaded us otherwise, which I am very happy about. The "cathedral" was amazing! It was originally a giant salt mine, and now ... read more
