Sunday 6th May - Cordoba to Buenos Aires A mere 10 hour bus ride journey and we were in the capital. Argentine buses have turned out to be rather frustrating as they continuously pull off the main roads and will take 10 minute detours into town centres to the bus stations to pick up one man and his dog, especially when you're paying $50 for bus rides that were costing only $10 in Bolivia. Anyway our first sight of Buenos Aires wasn't a great one as we arrived at the Retiro Bus Station which is seeping with scallys and trash but bus stations are generally not a good advert for cities and we were later to find out that BA is one of the great cities of the world, full of energy and character. The arrival ... read more

Monday 30th April - Cafayate to Tafi del Valle A 2pm bus to Tafi helped facilitate a nice leisurely late start and a walk around town to purchase some of the infamous wine ice cream. Stacie had the tinto and I got stuck with the blanco as she said it tasted like dirt and she was right. Mildly tipsy, we headed off on our 2 hour bus ride to Tafi through the mountains. We arrived in a sleepy village with buildings dotted sporadically across the mountain side which gave a slightly odd feel to the place but nonetheless it had a really nice quaint feel to it and we popped out from our new farmyard estancia to buy some local cheese and salami. Tuesday 1st May - Tafi to Tucuman Today is labour day and a ... read more

Thursday 26th April - Salta Argentina seemed a nice enough place on first sight, maybe not quite as attractive, affluent and European as we expected but it was certainly a lot more expensive than everywhere else we'd been to in South America. As a result we've decided to try and make a concious effort to be more economical which meant a return to the supermarket and more home made ham and cheese sandwiches. Friday 27th April - Salta One of the benefits of arriving in a more European style country was the potential to indulge in a game of golf which is quite common here. Before we could do this however, we had to secure some coin change in order to ride the local buses which is harder to obtain than you might imagine. It's so ... read more

Monday 23rd April - Sucre to Uyuni Thank god this would be our last bus trip on one of Bolivia's excuses for transportation as we made the 9 hour journey to the Salt flats of Uyuni. Amazingly a British couple sat in front of us had brought along their 3 or 4 year old son who clearly wasn't ready to cope with the arduous travel as he proceeded to be sick continuously for the whole journey, the poor little lad. Uyuni is the original and archetypal dustbowl of a town as it sits on the edge of the salt flats and a large desert are, probably only in existence to service the hoards of gringos who come to marvel at the largest salt flats in the world, a dried up salt lake from prehistoric times that ... read more

Tuesday 17th April - La Paz to Oruro We were somewhat fortunate to be able to get out of La Paz as we'd heard the exit roads had been blocked regularly of late by people protesting about some dodgy characters being let out of prison. Thankfully, Oruro was a transiting point for us as it was yet another dustbowl. We walked into town for a restaurant and had the pleasure of watching a young couple chew each others faces off as is so common in public in Latin America as we tucked into our dodgy lasagne. Wednesday 18th April - Oruro to Potosi Off we set on our 6 hour bus ride to Potosi which started off with the obligatory pitch by some sharkish travelling salesman in a suit which consists of him standing at the ... read more

Thursday 12th April - Copacabana to La Paz It was a 4 hour bus ride including a short boat trip across Lake Titicaca to get to the capital La Paz. The city is famously located at the base of a steep valley which provides you with an amazing view shortly before arriving. We checked into our ok hostal and had to then walk up 5 floors to get to our room which is harder than you might think at 3600 metres altitude. Then it was out on the mean streets of La Paz in search of food which are mental, manic, colourful and certainly full of life. Friday 13th April - La Paz Having decided we didn't like the location and the heart attack inducing 5 floor climb we exited our hostal and booked into the ... read more

Monday 9th April - Cusco to Puno Woo hoo and we're finally leaving Cusco. And what a warm feeling to get on the bus and be asked by the french couple in front how much we paid for the ticket and tell them they got stung for 50% more and even after they made the effort of booking in advance rather than just rock up like us. How could they be so stupide! We drove through Juliaca on the way to Puno which was yet another Peruvian dustbowl, crap hole of a city (where does all the money go?), which even gets a very poor write up in Lonely Planet which is oh so rare so must be true. I´ve just been left a comment on my Huaraz blog by a Peruvian who isn´t happy with ... read more

Tuesday 3rd April - Cusco A fairly non-descript day doing menial tasks such as laundry, giving the fraud department at Nationwide a piece of my mind in an effort to get back our 2 grand and booking tickets for the train and Machu Picchu. We also had some fun bartering with the locals for their over priced gringo souvenirs. Unfortunately the Real McCoy is closed on Tuesday so we were disappointed not to have fish and chips and instead I had to make do with an amazing cheeseburger after we reluctantly visited the obligatory Irish Pub found in every tourist hotspot which are a magnet for every annoying septic in town. Wednesday 4th April - Cusco to Ollantaytambo Our nice hotel receptionist man who takes his work a little too seriously was kind enough to extend ... read more

Sunday 1st April - Huaraz to Lima We paid a little extra for an executive bus to Lima and it was well worth it with a comfortable seat and 2 meals served during the 7 hour journey. The scenery driving through the Andes for the coast was dramatic but we hadn't appreciated that the coastal regions from Lima north were simply desolate dirty desert, interspersed with the occasional paddy and maize fields. The poverty in Peru is both widespread and probably the worst we'd seen in Latin America and to be worse than Nicaragua takes some beating. Patrick Symes didn't have many nice things to say about either Peru or Lima and he was spot on. Most of it is disgusting and many people we met were far from endearing and simply interested in what they ... read more

Tuesday 27th March - Chiclayo to Trujillo to Huaraz After a late start we got the 4 hour bus to Trujillo where we had intended to stay the night, before moving on but on arriving there we found there was only 1 bus a day leaving for Huaraz at 9pm. Rather than stay in yet another grotty city we decided to wait it out in the bus station for 5 hours, along with a short trip to a shopping mall we'd seen advertised before getting the night bus. We took a taxi through the city, looking at endless crap in the streets and half finished so called houses and arrived at the Plaza Aventura mall. which appears as almost an oasis out of the desert. If there weren't any people there you could easily be fooled ... read more
