Today we ventured off to Torres Del Paine to tackle the circuit, which is the famous 'W' trek, plus the backside of the national park. It's around 90-100km, and you need to be self sufficient. So the previous day we went out and bought our supplies and hired a tent and some sleeping mats (as we were unable to make our thermarests fit when we left Oz). We were pretty limited in what food we could get, so it will be 3 minute noodles (not 2 minute), soup, dehydrated potato, oatmeal, dried fruit and nuts for a week. Glad the tent had ventalation... After registering at the national parks adminstration office, we headed to Campamento Seron,a nice 11km to ease our way into the circuit. The weather was good, slightly warm, and we had good views ... read more

Following our break in El Calafate we headed west to Chile and the famous Torres del Paine national park. We got picked up by our bus at 5am. The trip across the border was loaded with vast arid landscapes speckled with occasional sitings of rhea (large ostrich like birds) and guancos (wild llamas). After ~6 hrs of driving with occasional bathroom breaks and view stops (one of which we saw the "devil horns", a pair of brown/grey peaks with black tips), we finally reached our destination...the Torres del Paine National Park. Due to many years of consulting, we have become lodging snobs and choose to stay at the Las Torres hotel (instead of camping!). The hotel is perfectly situated for the 9km Torres del Paine hike and makes for a great starting point. The next day ... read more

The fly-out option from Antarctica took us into Punta Arenas... and so how could we not take a few days in Torres del Paine national park on the way home?! We had a couple of days in Punta Arenas, enjoying (!) doing our laundry and being back on land. We also went to the biggest tourist attraction in the town - the cemetary. I guess it was interesting to see the size of the mausoleums etc but I found it quite creepy to go visiting a random cemetary while on holiday. Plus it was pouring with rain, which did not enhance my enjoyment of the tombstone viewing. Part of the trip was booked with last minute discounts (the Antarctic expedition), and the rest was at peak season premiums. This was particularly the case for Torres del ... read more

Highs: The W trek was awesome, in the true sense of the word (not awesome like a hotdog). The erratic rock hostal, owned by a larger than life American guy named bill, who makes his own bread and a fine omelette in the morning! And the people we met along the way, all so friendly and nice, particularly Stijn, who we met in El Calafate and Dragos, who we met in the hostal, both of whom we trekked the W with. Lows: Heavy packs. Gruelling ascents. Uncomfortable roll mats. Mozzie bites! Food: We had fun trying to guess weights and foods at a food weigh-house, where we stocked up on dry fruits, nuts, porridge oats and Quinoa. Then to the supermarket for pasta, sauce, biscuits etc. We ended up with just enough food for two, if ... read more

Southern Patagonia is wild ,desolate , windy and home to Chile’s most famous and well visited national park- Torres del Paine. Its crowning glory are the three stunning granite towers (torres) and the whole area is a hikers heaven!! It is full of spectacular lagoons, glaciers, rolling untamed grasslands, and high snow covered peaks. It also the site of Chile’s oldest human habitation , indigenous peoples now alas no longer. The park has an array of wonderful wildlife apart from sheep cows and amazing horses, and we saw foxes, guanacos (a relative of the llama tribe) by the score, the Andean condor ( check out my photo!) and the nandu described by Darwin ( resembling the ostrich but smaller). We also found flamingos, many ducks and the lesser spotted something or other!! We travelled from Punta ... read more

Having completed the epic journey to Antarctica, there was little rest or time for contemplation as the next destination was already decided. I was heading back into Chile to trek 5 days in the Torres del Paine National Park. I was already planning to do this before getting to Argentina, but the departure date of the Antarctica trip forced me to delay it. I guess that can be forgiven. A 16 hour bus ride later, crossing the border and the Strait of Magellan once more and I had arrived sleepily in Puerto Natales. This is the main gateway town to Torres del Paine and the place to rent equipment. There are a number of options for performing the trek. The entire circuit of the park is usually done in 7-8 days, but most trekkers only complete ... read more

Just after Christmas 2011 we arrived in Puerto Natales ready to don our rucksacks once again and enjoy the wonders of one of South America's most famous national parks: Torres del Paine. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, we arrived at the gates only to be told that a large wildfire had engulfed a large portion of the park. We turned back without being able to walk so much as a hundred metres of Torres del Paine's famous trails - for me, it was a huge disappointment. It was something I had been looking forward to for years. The fire swept through nearly 13,000 hectares of the park, destroying huge swathes of slow-growing native Patagonian forest in the very heart of the park. For weeks Chileans despaired at the slow and inefficient response of the authorities to the destruction ... read more

We left Tierre del Fuego to drive to the Torres del Paine national park, both places I’ve spent years dreaming about going to. After spending New Years Eve in the Land of Fire its time to trek the Towers of Blue. But first a two day drive to get there. Reversing our last journey of 2012 we left Ushuaia and headed back through Patagonia, across the border into Chile and on to the ferry to cross the Magellan Straights. Camp for the night was another wild camp, no facilities but our very own shipwreck and haunted house! As light fell I clambered over the wreck and explored the houses before retiring back to the campfire for dinner and a quiz. Thankfully I didn’t explore the houses in too much detail…. Some friends attempted to camp at ... read more

Before stepping into the some of the most isolated and unpredictable landscapes on earth we were told there was going to be no search and rescue in Patagonia. We were completely unperturbed while getting prepared for the 6 day hike. We were occupied with questions such as which packet food might sustain us the longest or whether our lack of weather-proof clothing might be an issue. But as we began to feel smaller in our surroundings and more far away from reality than ever before, search and rescue didn't seem like such a bad idea. The hike is called 'The W' trail because that's what it looks like, a w. There are say 500 ways in which you can attack it so naturally we opted for the cheapest. It cost a fair bit of money to ... read more
