We awake on day 7 to a day that looks like it might be ok as the wind has died down, and the rain has stopped. However, the mountains towering over the camp site are shrouded in misty low cloud. I was tasked the night before to wake everyone's sorry arse up at 7am, as we have a long days walking ahead. It is still relatively dark, but the sun is trying its best to break through. After rousing all the sleepy heads it is time to pack up our gear and have breakfast, masticating our last bit of oats like one of the local horses. By the time we finish swallowing our last bit of goop, the tent is dry and ready to pack up. We are off by 9am, to attempt to get to ... read more

Today is not only day 6 of our trek, but also Mojo's birthday! I wake early after getting a so-so sleep. The additional mat has made a world of difference and provided some welcomed padding. But, as we had the backpacks in the tent during the night (to provide some extra weight so we did not fly away!) it was cramped. Also, as the tent is not as it should be, i was hit in the face with one of the tent walls during the night each time the wind blew, which was constantly. It is dumping with rain, & Mojo is out for the count, and i think to myself that today is a good day to rest. We are all tired, my knee's are shot, Mike has blisters upon blisters (impressive) and the weather ... read more

After 3 weeks and a lot of south-bound travelling, we have eventually made it all the way down to Puerto Natales, home to the Torres del Paine National Park, a well sought after place amongst South American travellers. This is the furthest south we will ever get, probably ever in our lives, being only a thousand kilometres away from Antarctica. Safe to say its chilly on a night. The first thing on our long list of things to do was to hire out the gear that we needed for the up and coming few days. We scouted around some of the hire shops before settling on the 'Across Patagonia' option, giving us good quality at a good price. They kitted us out with all that we needed; sleeping bags, a tent, stove and pans for just ... read more

Woke up on day 5 sore & cold. Sore in the legs as well as from the permanent bruises we have formed on our hips and shoulders from sleeping on the hard ground. We want to walk to Refugio Grande Paine today, a total of 21km over a slightly undulating landscape. More oats and dolche de leche (getting rather tired of this for breaky now) and a cup of tea to get us going, plus some anti-inflammatory tablets... It has rained fairly steadily overnight, and the tent is wet, making it a pain in the arse to pack up, as well as freezing our hands. But we manage and hit the trail by 10.30. The start of the walk is similar to the end of yesterdays walk, making our way through the dense and damp forest ... read more

Today is the big day... Time to tackle the Paso John Gardner, with an ascent of more than 600 metres to above 1000 metres, and then descending 800 metres on the other side. We are up early, after a bloody cold night, and the temperature is still hovering around 0 degrees. Our fingers go numb quickly as we pack up the tent, warming them with some tea and a big bowl of oats and dolche de leche (kind of like creamed caramel). The track out of the campsite is essentially a quagmire, with loads of water and mud and the odd tree branch positioned by other walkers to help navigate through the mess. It is also a small steady incline, and the going is tough, having to navigate through mud, balancing on rocks and swinging off ... read more

Hi everyone, I'm writing this part of our adventure from our bus to Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas, a 3 hour bus journey that will take us to our next departure point tomorrow for Puerto Montt, further north in Chile. But for the time being it is time for me to tell you a little bit more about our trek in Tores del Paine and reflect on this beautiful 4 days we spent in the Chilean National park. We set off on the 18th with Rex (US - Arizona) and Elsa (France) with whom we decided to share this part of our trip after meeting them along the way trying to cross the Argentinian border from Rio Turbio. The trek we opted for like most people going to Tores del Paine was the W, a 4 ... read more

We wake to a beautiful day, an absolute contrast to the day before. We have spectacular views to the mountain ranges surrounding us, and realise why it was so cold the night before; there is an enormous glacier which the wind was blowing across straight onto the campsite. There is also small icebergs floating down the river. It seems that the cold i finally shook off a few days prior has come back with my ears blocked and my throat raging. Luckily, it is an easy walk today, 9km to Campamento Los Perros, as tomorrow we have a killer of a day. It is a steady climb out of the camp site through a pretty forest, with great views back towards the glacier. After reaching the peak it is a meandering walk through a beautiful forest ... read more

Day 2 begins nicely with the sun shining, but very fresh. We knew from the weather forecast that today was going to be a bad weather day, with wind over 100km and heavy rain. We quickly scoff down some breakfast and make tracks before we freeze as it takes a while for the sun to rise and heat up. We have 19km to cover to get to Refugio Dickson. The first hours walk is similar to the day before, quite flat and following the river Rio Paine down the east side of the park. At one point when we stop to get some water mojo finds some pretty big puma paw prints in the mud, that were fresh from the night before. To get to the north side of the park we encounter our first pass, ... read more
