28th January There was nothing left for us in Caldera it was OK but we thought it better to push on North to San Pedro De Atacama. San Pedro is at 2500 meters above sea level so we would need time to acclimatize to the altitude so thought push on then stay there a couple of days. It was another 11 hour bus journey to San Pedro so we left Calama & headed back to Copiapo to arrange a bus. The only bus available was the night bus leaving at 9.30pm which was good as it meant another night’s accommodation saved on the bus. The only problem was the 9 hours to waste in Copiapo before the bus left. We had a wander around not finding anything of any real interest bar the shady square. I ... read more

27th January We dropped people off of the bus in various towns in the early hours on the way to Copiapo, our destination near the desert coast. We arrived into a station and the bus attendant woke up passengers & told them that this was their stop and they got off. We hadn't been told this was our stop by the attendant and as there was no sign telling us where we were we assumed that it wasn't our stop so we stayed on the bus. After 1/2 hour of fueling up & some minor maintenance to the door the attendant was handing out breakfast boxes. He gave me a double take and said 'Copiapo' to me looking wide eyed. This was indeed our stop so we managed to get off just as the driver was ... read more

Español más abajo Together with aunt Wilma and her family we planned to go camping to a tiny village about 2 and 1/2 hours north of La Serena called Punta de Choros. As we didn't fit in aunt Wilma's car, we made our own way there in a rickety minibus, and as only the first 2 hours are paved... well we were covered in dust by the time we got there (talk about a spray tan!). We had arranged to meet up with aunt Wilma and co when we got there, problem was that she left much later than us and unbeknown to us there was no mobile phone signal to arrange where and when to meet. Before leaving, she told us to go to a campsite, she said, there are 2 campsites in the village, ... read more

It was a strange but pleasant Christmas day this year. For one thing, waking up to the heat again first thing in the morning was both confusing and comforting. I had a smile on my lips before I had even opened my eyes as the realisation hit me - that´s right I WAS back in the southern hemisphere again! The destination for Christmas was San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. It is an oasis tourist town located in the Atacama desert, which is apparently the driest in the world. I would believe this claim. Much like any other Christmas, the day begins casually with the scent of festive spirit in the air and much preparation to be done. We were lucky enough to have met another two couples (Katherine and Julian, Liam and Anna) while travelling across ... read more

hello all just a quick message (no fotos) to let you know that I´m still alive and made it back from the class trip to Brazil all in one piece (just with a cold and an infected foot). I´ve got a few blog updates to put up (and lots and lots of pictures) but what with all of my host siblings being home for the holidays (five beds and six of us isn´t going terribly well i must say), me being sick, and me probablay moving in the next week, I´m not sure when the blog updates will be getting up. I hope you all had a wonderful christmas or happy various other holidays. A big huge thankyou and lots of hugs to Romey and the rest of my church family at Falmouth Church Of the ... read more

Only spent a day here. Got dropped off at the nearby Bahia Inglessa which is a nice little seaside resort, but the accomodation was a bit pricey, so jumped back in the cab to Caldera. Walked along the beach and saw Pelicans and Sea lions. Boucs managed to befriend a Chilean guy from Santiago and convinced him to come fishing with us. Went to another local beach nearby called Loretto - didn't catch any fish, but ate some wicken scallops! Went back into town to have some beers with Salvadore before he got his flight back to Santiago, then Boucs and I went for some fish and rice. Got back to the hostel for a little nap and woke up at 1.00AM! Still went out though and managed to get smashed in the 2 hours we ... read more

As some of you know, my sister Laura came for a short visit. She spent the weekend with me here in Copiapó and then we headed to Serena for the week so she could go to her class´s graduation and spend some time with her Chilean family from her exchange last year. And as Im sure any of you who know Laura would expect... she did all the picture taking, but I´ve got some of her pictures so here are the ones from our weekend while here in Copiapó. We went and saw my school, went downtown, went to a party with my friends and went to the Dunes with the girls. My host family was in Santiago when she arrived, and got back Saturday night and then my host parents went snorkeling at the beach ... read more
