So I missed another earthquake yesterday. They happen every few weeks here. This one was rather strong apparently but I was out of town. My co-teacher told me that it was shaking the buildings and she couldn't get the door of her classroom open! Uh-oh! She managed to get it open as the earthquake was ending. Que afortunado! Hope all is well!... read more

Just some photos of what I've been up to lately... some from school, a few from parties, the family, my hamster Chicha... etc. by the way, sorry about the lack of updates for a while... aside from some computer and camera problems i think ive really just been kind of getting lost in life here. At this point a lot of the time it doesnt even occur to me to bring my camera places or take pictures because most of what happens is just normal life for me now. plus I've got just a few weeks left and I'm packing a lot in...!... read more

So I meant to write this earlier this week but this week has been hectic. My coteacher was out of school sick so for the first half of the week I had every class to myself. I think I had control for about the first 15 minutes with the good students. What a learning experience! I decided to give myself Thursday off since I had worked over my regular scheduled hours for the whole week by Wednesday. Then Friday was Dia del Trabajador also known as Labor Day. Most of the world actually celebrates it on the first of May I discovered. So I've been enjoying a long weekend. I've been finding out that the region I'm in has some very unique places within its borders. *Just north of Caldera there is a beach that has ... read more

Well, it's been awhile since my last entry. I've been keeping very busy with school. I really love this job! Chile is definitely growing on me as well. I think the locals are starting to get used to having a gringo running around their streets as well. I seem to have lost the card-reader for my digital camera's memory card. This means I don't currently have a way of downloading my pictures from my camera to my computer. However, my good friend, Marta (applause) is going to send me a new one. So if you check out my blog solely for the unbelievably amazing, dare I say, breath-taking photos...I'm sorry, you're outta luck for now! The last two weeks have really been a rollercoaster for me. I was feeling kinda down after getting back from La ... read more

After a lot of rushing around and changing our plans (and even our bus tickets) several times, we jumped on a bus to San Pedro de Atacama. Still feeling the pinch, and optimistic about our money-saving abilities after couchsurfing, we opted for the first time for the economy bus. Trying to picture it? Take twenty four hours, add some hot sunshine, throw in a hard seat that does not recline, and you start to get the idea. Usually the high point of a long bus journey is the airoplane-style food. Not so the econo-bus. Stupidly, in our haste, Tom and I hadn´t brought any supplies with us, so you can imagine our horror when we discovered that ´dinner'was half a soggy sandwich. Despite the stiff necks and rumbling tummies, we survived and when we stepped off ... read more

The way north from La Serena to San Pedro de Atacama was long but pretty uneventful, except that for once the movie was shown in English not Spanish (volume still turned up to max of course) so for a change I didn't need to play the 'make the story up' game (although I've discovered that sometimes the made up version is better than the original)!!! Most of the 18plus hours passed with me peering out at the arid, often moon-like landscape surrounding us, one that was full of rocks, sand and not much else, seemed to go on forever but at times was still quite stunning. Generally I'm not in the habit of booking accommodation ahead and tend to opt for the turn up and wing it approach instead. I'd only regretted it once back in ... read more

Semana Santa This week is Semana Santa or "Holy Week". This was also my first week teaching classes alone. For anybody who thinks that teachers are getting paid enough I challenge you to teach any subject to a classroom full of 10-17 year-olds. If you've done that, try doing it to a classroom of students who don't understand a single word you're saying. Then tell me if you think teachers are paid enough!!! Actually, this has been one of the most exciting, challenging, and rewarding weeks of my life. I've answered the question "do you have a girlfriend?" about 20 times. I've seen students bored out of their minds. I've seen students light up when we start playing a game and they see that they actually do know some English. I'm exhausted to be honest. Today ... read more

What's up, kids? Been a while since my last blog. Since then I've been to Uruguay, back to Argentina, and then now in Chile. So, you'll notice that my photos are a compilation of these travels. Hope you like. Now I am traveling on my own. Been enjoying the experience again. After Uruguay I returned to Buenos Aires to meet up with my friend, Florian (Deutsch). We hung out for a couple of days. The second day hitting a dance club. Yes, what you hear is true. Germans like their techno dance clubs (poonchie poonchie music as Florian puts it). Had a good time. Although, Argentinian fems are a bit snobby. Whatever. I moved westward visiting Cordoba and Mendoza. While in Cordoba, I visited the small town where "Che" grew up. His childhood home was turned ... read more
