Español más abajo. We woke up to a mainly sunny and hot day (well it's always hot, even when it rains). We opened our door, and as we had a sea view, the first thing we saw was a HUUUUUGE cruise ship. We decided to not do many touristy things today, especially as cruises bring a big influx of tourists for the day, so our second day was spent getting our bearings in Hanga Roa, and being amazed at how expensive EVERYTHING is here. Prices for everything are definitely not the same as continental Chile, in fact sometimes things are more expensive than in Britain! But it sort of makes sense as it cost a lot of money to get things shipped from Chile. Today we also tried our first ice creams from a homemade ice ... read more

Español más abajo After much anticipation and a 5 hour flight from Santiago (yes, it's that far from Chile!), west into the Pacific Ocean we arrived in Easter Island. Even though Easter Island is the most remote inhabited island in the world and only has 3,700 inhabitants, I had never expected its airport to be so tiny and informal, as soon as we landed I could tell I was somewhere special. There was a small band playing traditional music as soon as we stepped off the plane, we then realised it was not a show for the flight but they were playing for a family member who happened to be in our fight. Don't know how they were actually allowed to go past the point of scanning to be almost at the runway, but it just ... read more

We went back to Rengo and went to the Santa Cruz museum, there aren't many pictures of us inside as we were not allowed to take pictures in enclosed spaces, we took a sneaky picture and a security guard came running out of nowhere to tell us off! Santa Cruz is a small town that's about 1 hrs south of Rengo and it has the largest privately owned museum in Chile, the owner used to be an arms dealer :s. The next day we went to a place where we had a bbq and it had a swimmig pool in Rengo, it was the same place where I went the day before Andy arrived in December. ---------------------- ESPAÑOL Fuimos a Rengo y de ahí al museo de Santa Cruz, no hay muchas fotos de nosotros adentro ... read more

Español más abajo. A few days after our last trip to Coquimbo, we came back again as there were still a few landmarks I hadn't seen yet. The first was the brand new Coquimbo football stadium. This was the same stadium which Carla came to in December to watch the a Woman's Under-20 World Cup game. The Under-20 world cup was recently staged in Chile and Coquimbo had the stadium paid for them by just making an application to the Chilean Football Association who seem to be spending a lot on new stadiums with (I think) maybe a view to one day hosting the World Cup. It's certainly a beautiful stadium for a Chilean 2nd division side. Our 2nd stop was the Coquimbo Mohammed VI Mosque. This Mosque was built as the mayor of Coquimbo (at ... read more

Today we went for a small day trip to La Serena's neighbouring town Coquimbo. We went to go visit the local fort which the Chileans used to use to fight of attempted invasions, although as Coquimbo was invaded by the Spanish and British pirates in the past, they obviously don't have a 100% success rate. British pirates included Bartholomew Shape (REALLY evil) and Sir Frances Drake (known in Chile as "pirata Drake") - Andy ------------------ ESPAÑOL Hoy fuimos a un pequeño paseo a Coquimbo. Fuimos a ver el fuerte, aunque no sirvó de mucho ya que Coquimbo ha sido invadido por los Españoles y piratas Ingleses. Español más abajo After getting our bus from Vicuña we arrived in the sweltering heat of Elqui Valley. I still had my massive backpack on (Carla managed to dump hers off into her aunt's car in Vicuña) but luckily the walk to the camp site was all downhill from the main road. We arrived and saw Carla's aunt, uncle and Seba just getting ready to start setting up camp. Carla and I didn't have to buy a tent as aunt Wilma gave us one for Christmas, when we got it out and started setting it up we started to wonder not only where we were gonna put our stuff in the tent, but where we were going to fit ourselves inside the tent. The measurements they claimed on the pack were nowhere near the real measurements. ... read more

Español más abajo We both went to Vicuña, a town 90 km from La Serena that's east on the way to the Andes (as if you're driving to Argentina). We stayed there overnight before joining the Nuñes Segovia family for a camping trip a further hour and a half inland to a camping place near a village called Pisco Elqui. Andy and I headed to Vicuña from La Serena and after dropping our bags at our hostel (such a gorgeous place to stay), we went to visit a Pisco factory. For those of you who don't know, Pisco is pretty much our national drink (although it's yet another subject of intense “debate” between Chileans and Peruvians), it's made from distilled grapes, on its own it tastes pretty lethal, well like any other high percentage spirit, but ... read more

Español más abajo Together with aunt Wilma and her family we planned to go camping to a tiny village about 2 and 1/2 hours north of La Serena called Punta de Choros. As we didn't fit in aunt Wilma's car, we made our own way there in a rickety minibus, and as only the first 2 hours are paved... well we were covered in dust by the time we got there (talk about a spray tan!). We had arranged to meet up with aunt Wilma and co when we got there, problem was that she left much later than us and unbeknown to us there was no mobile phone signal to arrange where and when to meet. Before leaving, she told us to go to a campsite, she said, there are 2 campsites in the village, ... read more

Español mas abajo We went to aunt Wilma's for lunch to celebrate my granny's birthday. Aunt Wilma surpassed herself, as she baked an amazing chocolate and cherry birthday cake, I could hardly believe my tastebuds! At the lunch was grandad, aunt Wilma and her family (Uncle Juan, Juan Eduardo and Seba), aunt Rosa (gran's sister in law) and her grandaughter Valerie. Andy and I got to aunt Wilma's house early, where I helped out with lunch, and Andy headed off to play football playstation games with my cousins (boys eh!). My usually prompt grandparents were about an hour late, but it's only because my aunt is infamous for her late lunches. In the evening we went home and my grandad had bought a massive delicious cake. Today was the best day for cakes ever! ---------------------------------- ESPAÑOL ... read more
