After the joys of Easter Island we resumed our march North towards Bolivia. Easter Island was a spur of the moment trip, but it gave us the opportunity to head up through Northern Chile something we weren´t planning to do. Firt stop from Santiago was La Serena, a beach resort about 7 hours north of the Chilean capital. Its the second oldest town in Chile (we haven´t worked out what the oldest is) and has quite a colonl feel. That though wasn´t the reason we headed there. That part of Chile is one of the best places in the world to look at stars bcause of the minimal amont of light pollution and minimal amout of dust in he atmosphere in that region. Hence the cellestial objects are pretty clear and countries from all over the ... read more

Well, I spent my first night in Caldera. It's a very small town right on the ocean. It has a nice beach. The view isn´t spectacular but there is another beach called Bahia Inglesa that is GORGEOUS. The water is clear-aqua colored similar to pictures of the Caribbean. I spent the day today in classes making a fool of myself in front of Chilean students. It was a BLAST!!! I think I turned red about 80 times. But that's not that difficult to do. I don't have very much time right now but I just wanted to post some pics I've taken.... read more

hello all! its been a while since ive updated the blog.... Im back in Copiapó, and after moving around a bit ive now settled in living with James´s grandmother ("Yaya") and am doing really well despite a recent hospital trip for a bad reaction to some sort of bug bite. The house is really nice, I´ve got a good sized room to myself with plenty of space, a big bed, an ironing table to put Chicha´s cage on and a nice set of drawers for my clothes (i spent a few weeks between the house of my program counsellor and James´s house living out of my suitcase, which made me discover that i like having a set place to live and sleep and put my clothes). I´m back in school, and all is good in that ... read more

Dear all! This is going to be an update about my last weeks in Buenos Aires and my first weeks of travelling... Last three weeks in Buenos Aires I have had a lot of fun in Buenos Aires! I went with Amarins and her friend Anja to Recoletta, where the famous cemetery is where ´Evita´ is barried. I also went to check the museum of Evita, which was very impressive. She did a lot for the country, especially for young children. When I entered the cemetary I felt very strange, because I didn´t expect that is was so big and soo much above the ground! It actually looked like a small village with all little buildings.. Further I went to see the neighbourhood ´La Boca´which is famous for the colorful houses. In between of that I ... read more

pictures uploaded finally..... hola, so we made it to Calama, after a 10hr overnight ride in a bus from Arica, Chile. This bus ride wasnt too bad, it seems the roads and drivers in chile are a little more prudent and cautious than peru. we arrived at around 5am, and it was maybe 40 degrees there ,7500feet elevation of course. After a brisk walk, we found a hostel, and were able to get right into the room. Calama is a small town in the atamaca desert, and the gateway to the Chuquicamata copper mine. we were able to get on a tour that same day in the afternoon of the copper mine. its a 15min taxi ride to the mine. then onto a tour type bus and into the mine. its sooooooo huge, everything about it ... read more

Mineral Museum James took me to Copiapó's mineral museum! He likes geology and used to spend a lot of time there (and thus knows the museum people well and gets in for free) and decided he had to take me when i told him that my geologist mom would probably kill me if i spent a year living in a town that houses the museum containing the most complete collection of chilean rocks and minerals in all of chile without ever going to see it. It was actually pretty fun, a lot of really cool looking formations and colorful minerals (I can feel my mom´s glowing pride all the way down here as she reads that im calling a mineral museum "fun" and rock formations "cool"). I recognised some of the names of things and knew ... read more

On a repris le bus direction Socaire, petit village ... read more

¡Hola Amigos/as! If I had only one word to describe San Pedro de Atacama it would be HOT...i guess that should be expected in the dryest desert in the world! We arrived on yet another overnight bus and found ourselves 10 hours from the cool ocean breezes of Iquique. We took the first hostel we found which had no a/c, scalding hot or ice cold water, and lots of flies. We immediately found all its inhabitants lazing in the shade sleeping off the night before. It didn´t take us long to join them. :) We spent most of that night learning new card games, telling crazy travel stories and hanging with friends from Holland, UK, Australia, etc. San Pedro is an oasis town in the Atacama desert just West of Bolivia. It is a tourist town ... read more
