Sunday 8th December (Odyssey Day 30) We headed out for yet another border crossing this morning. We had fresh watermelon for breakfast, a really nice change, and the guy from the camp brought us fresh walnuts as well. It was interesting to see Ellie try to crack one open before Maddie told her she needed to have two in her hand to manage it. I think she might have been there for quite a while otherwise... We crossed the border with ease here. We still needed to unload everything to get it scanned, but they were much better organised at this crossing than any previous one and it was accomplished with relative ease. Having crossed into Chile again, we made a quick stop at a shop to buy some food before making a lunch stop. The ... read more

Saturday 18 May to Wednesday 22 May So after an amazing month in Argentina, it was time to board the bus and head for the Chilean border. Destination: Pucon, via Osorno. The journey was pretty uneventful all in, though I had my eyes opened to the strictness of Chilean Customs at the border crossing. The country is extremely protective of its natural habitat, so pretty much all foodstuffs need to be declared. Their sniffer dogs are trained to seek these out, so there's no hiding an apple in your bag! To be on the safe side I decided to declare my Herbs de Provence, though it seems those of the dried variety do not pose a threat. My cooking ingredients therefore lived to see another day... Once we were back on our way and further into ... read more

Pucon is a very nice town on the shore of Lake Villarica overlooked by the Volcano Villarica and it is only 5 1/2 hours away from Puerto Varas so a nice bus ride for us. We checked into a lovely hostel all wooden and heated by wood burners giving it a swiss chalet feel. Most people visiting Pucon have one goal in mind. Climbing the active volcano! A hike of 5hrs up. Crampons and ice picks required to scale the near vertical wall of ice to the summit, depending on the wind direction you then get to rest at the top inhaling toxic fumes before passing out and sliding back down. Marks knees have survived all our walks to now but we decided that this might be one step too far. We spent the first day ... read more

I've done so much since I have last written that it's almost to hard to remember what I have done. I've noticed I say "amazing" a lot, but I can't help it, everything is amazing here. I need some new adjectives to describe everything, that part of my brain has stopped working, but ill see how I go. Some things you should also note, I've changed..... I drink black coffee now, Malbec wine is my friend, I haven't used a hair brush since I've left home, my standards on frequency of showering have lowered, I put used toilet paper in a bucket next to the toilet. I wonder how many of these changes will stay, let's hope the toilet paper one adjusts accordingly, otherwise I apologise in advance if I come visit your place and use ... read more

Hi all, It's been quite a few days since the last entry, me and Carmen have made our way to Santiago already but a combination of no time and no access to my dear Camera for the pictures means I have not yet updated you all on our ascension to Volcano Villarica. The Volcano had been luring us for few days, we booked our day trip to the top of Volcano Villarica on our very first day in Pucon for our return from park Huerquehue; having checked the weather it looked like Sunday 31st would be ideal; the climb can only be attempted on clear days not to put hikers into danger but also to maximize the chance of having a clear view from the top. It took us 3 attempts... day 1 (sunday), the wind ... read more

Hi everybody, Our first outing in Pucon was hiking the beautiful Huerquehue National park about 50 Kms from base. The funny thing in Pucon is even though they are surrounded by National Parks and camping opportunities for locals and tourists alike, there are actually no tents to be found for rent anywhere in the city (we thought renting would be more convenient for us on our journey in South America), Carmen and I spent hours asking every tour agency without success. Resigned to a couple of day hikes I headed to the Rangers administration office in Pucon to request a map and after hearing the difficulty we were having the Park administrator kindly offered us to stay in the ranger's dome at the campsite. With both our sleeping back and food we set off for a ... read more
