Hi everyone, this is Fi, finally getting round to giving Ken a well-deserved break from the blog writing! We've had a pretty adventurous 10 days or so since leaving the pleasant city of Chillan. Some of the highlights include: cycling past the stunning snow-capped volcanoes of the Malalcahuello and Conguillio national reserves; passing through the longest tunnel in South America, which doesn't permit cyclists, resulting in us having to load our bikes and gear into the cramped minivan of a very kind Chilean businessman; an adrenaline-fuelled sprint of some 50 miles along the busy Pan-American highway; and, as always, being overwhelmed by the kindness of complete strangers - one lovely lady caught up with us in the tiny town of Quilleco to gift us a large bottle of water and box of chocolates! We've ridden almost ... read more

Sarah: We are currently sat killing some time at our hostel in Pucon before our bus by watching Everton vs Saints (with English commentary no less). Saints are currently 1 - 0 down, so a bit tense at the moment, but hopefully by the time I finish this there'll be better news! To pick up from where I left off on Wednesday, we did brave the rain and finally get our postcards posted with a stop for some coffee and cake to reward ourselves. My saddle was still sore until Friday after our bumpy bike ride, but I'm now able to sit down without grimacing! The rain didn't let up for the rest of the day and so after our short trip in to town we cooked up some pasta and had a cosy evening in. ... read more

Sarah: There is a lot to do in and around Pucon, mostly outdoorsy. Therefore, yesterday, knowing that the weather was going to take a turn for the worse on Wednesday, we wanted to choose wisely what we would do on what may be the last good-weather day. We settled on a bike rental with a destination of 'Ojos del Caburgua' which was a local beauty spot about 12 miles from Pucon, making a 24 mile round-trip. After brekkie, I set about my duties as Chief Sandwich Officer, loaded up on water (which is a lot less hassle in Chile as we can drink straight out the tap) and headed off to rent our bikes! The bikes were a lot better than our bikes at home, which makes a change from most foreign bike rentals that we'd ... read more

Nick: I'd been looking forward to the Chilean Lake District since we had started planning our trip. It was always our intention to spend a few days here relaxing, getting in some good walking (given that the trip down to Patagonia hadn't featured in our original plans), and generally catching up after the first three weeks of travelling around South America. As a 'home from home', we couldn't have chosen much better. As noted on the journey from the airport in Temuco down to our base in Pucon, this particular part of Chile was uncannily like good ol' Blighty, with plenty of green fields and deciduous trees - and even the odd herd of Jersey cows! To boot, our hostel was wonderfully homely, and the owner, Rodrigo, was an absolute gem. With a proper kitchen and ... read more

It has been a while since I made a blog entry and the reason for this is that not much has happened during that time except some travelling and being in a new city – Temuco. After my last entry in Antuco and the awesome trip with Stella and Walter up to the volcano and the lake in bad weather I headed the next day back to Los Angele. When I woke up that day it was absolutely stunning weather and I tried in vain to get another lift to the volcano. It was Monday so there were no tourists or other backpackers around to hitch a lift or organise transport. A real shame as I really wanted to see the area in sunshine. Ah well, you can’t have it all. So I took a local ... read more

Our flight from Punta Arenas arrived in Puerto Montt, which left us with a five hour bus to take us to Pucon that same day. With all flight and bus connections going as smooth as clockwork, we were all chilled out in Pucon before we knew it. Sitting ominously in the shadow of the highly active Volcano Villarrica, from first impressions this picturesque Lake District town was everything we had hoped it would be. The previous day we had made a reservation to do what is most likely the towns most famous tour...to climb Volcano Villarrica. 8pm the night before we went for our boot and clothing fitting and for a basic briefing on what to bring and expect. Just as we thought we had left all the cold weather, next thing you know, we're getting ... read more
