Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

First of all, I have to apologize to everyone for not having done any updates in the last month of my travels. I am now home, safe and sound and in one piece and experiencing the culture shock of returning home. The final month of my South American adventure was jam packed with amazing sights, sounds, tastes and experiences. I learned what it is truly like to be living out of a backpack, jumping from one place to the next every other day ~ the packing and un-packing. Packing. Unpacking. ~ I don't know how people do it for months at [View Full Entry]

Leaving Bahia

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
Today is my last day in Bahia. I got the ferry from Morro de Sao Paulo to Salvador yesterday, and went to a candomble show last night, which was pretty interesting. Everyone wearing white, dancing and making weird noises (supposedly in a trance). This was an "authentic" candomble ritual - "not for the tourists" - but even though there were more tourists than locals, it was still nice. Today I went to another capoeira practice, and I am flying to Rio de Janeio later. I will have 2 more days in Rio, and then home. [View Full Entry]

I spent the last 2 days in Salvador, doing a little capoeira, and having a good time in general. I went to the afro-brazilian museum, a capoeira lesson, a berimbau (musical instrument used in capoeira) lesson, a capoeira show, and some other things I can´t remember right now. Salvador had a fun vibe to it, with lots of music and capoeira in the streets, even though there are a lot of beggars and hustlers (people offer you a ´gift´ and then want a donation). I also got my luggage back from the airline, which was quite a nice surprise. I plan [View Full Entry]

Africa in Brazil

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
I arrived in Salvador yesterday, after my flight from Manaus, with a connection in Sao Paulo (which is like going from Haifa to Jerusalem through Beer Sheva). Of course, my luggage did not arrive to Salvador (or actually the cover did, the backpack did not). I did not lose anything too important, so I am perfectly fine with it. Salvador itself is a very nice place. Everyone here is black, so it really is like a piece of Africa, and of course there is lots of capoeira stuff around. Mostly it is just tourist souvenirs, but there are some academies and [View Full Entry]

Salvador has been a great place to spend a few days. We have stayed in the upper town in the Nega Maluca hostel which has been great. Being back amongst fellow travellers has enabled us to share a few war stories and to hear of other people's experiences too. Breakfast on the terrace has been great and you can't beat chilling out in a hammock for the afternoon. The city itself has your head turning with every step you take. There's artwork, dancing, music and, of course, churches, everywhere. It's easy to fill a day or two just browsing. If you [View Full Entry]

This was one of the largest groups in Carnival
I was just passing through Salvador for one of the biggist parties so I figured I had to stop in and check it out. I Spent 7 nights in Salvador and had a chance to really experience Carnival. The only problem was it was to dangerious to take your camera out with you, so I have very little photos. I did buy a disposible one but I need to finish the roll then add them. Carnival in Salvador is broken up into three sections, The Pello, Campo Grande and Barra. I spent a few days in each and stayed in the [View Full Entry]

The barber in the streets
Hey everyone I headed up to the North-East by myself on my first solo leg in Brazil. Salvador, capital of Bahia and previous capital of Brazil was where my plane landed. The city has a different culture from the south; much more influenced by African culture as this was the first stop for the slave ships. It also has a lot of colonial architecture since it also where the Portuguese first landed. Once I had gotten a local bus into town from the airport (over an hour away!), I did the usual touristy thing - museums, shopping in the markets and [View Full Entry]
