So we were in Copacabana this morning. It is a resort style town..smaller..but totally cute on lake titicaca. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the three of us had a blast. We arrived here in La Paz this evening!! I love the city--it is just amazing. We went and got some dinner when it suddenly started to hail...and i mean rocks of hail were falling. We did some shopping...i got a lot of great alpaca stuff--presents for everyone!!! We went to the presidential palace which was cool cause of all the political stuff that is going on here in Bolivia. Tomorrow we"re off to see some ruins that are 3000 years old so im stoked for that!! Again, thanks for the continuous cards and emails from everyone. I got to talk to some of you people ... read more

Happily washed and rested in La Paz after my Uyuni expedition, I had a day to kill until MsRoxyRyan arrived for our jungle boogie. I signed up for a two-part tour of La Paz - the high, high lakes of Mt Chacaltaya and The Valley of The Moon. It was a pleasant enough day with the surprise of some heavy snow (?!) which prevented us from making it to 5000 metres... and also nearly killed us all. We had a funny little guide who was chattering away to the packed minivan in his peculiar way as we wound our way gingerly up a tiny muddy mountain road. Clumps of snow thudded out of the sky on all sides. This road was truly miniscule and I couldn’t help but stare into the enormous drop to the valley ... read more

I had always planned to visit the Bolivian Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni), I just didn’t realise that it would be such a mad dash to get there. This trip was next on my list after the bike ride but I hadn’t actually researched transport or booked anything in advance. This policy which seems to be working quite well, I’m saving money by paying at the pointy end and I have less stress about whether I am going to be in the right place at the right time. BUT… It requires some quick decisions. I chatted to someone about it in La Paz one morning and, an hour later, I had all my stuff packed and had leapt onto a three hour bus ride to Oruro to connect with the train to Uyuni. Talk about cutting ... read more

If Buenos Aires was the party, La Paz was the morning after. I wasn’t doing myself any favours coming off a massive night like that and not sleeping before my flights (BsAs - Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz - La Paz). The second leg was a bit surreal as I fought sleep and elderly Bolivian Hugo tried to give me advice in his broken English (“You will come back and I will buy you”). Still, despite the nervous energy and the bitter cold on top of the mountain where the airport sits, I was able to appreciate the spectacle of descending from a dizzying height into the valley city of La Paz. I sat in the back of the battered taxi feeling like a marble that had just rolled over the lip of the hill. The city ... read more

Bolivia - A Total of 3 Months I visited Bolivia on three different occasions. 27th Jan - 13th Feb 2004 (17 Days) to see photos of this section see Iquitos to Rio The first time I went to Bolivia I entered from the North, having just travelled along the River Amazon and down the Madeira River to Porto Velho. After I recovered from fever I crossed the river Mamore from the Brazilian town of Guajara to enter Bolivia at Guayaramerin. I spent days trying to arrange a boat trip through the jungle to Trinidad but I was continually told there would be one tomorrow. Eventually I decided to forget about sailing down the river and took a public bus to Trinidad, on what turned out to be a lengthy and eventful journey as the Bolivian ... read more

Up early and headed 72km out of La Paz to the Tiwanaku ruins. In comparison to whats ahead theyre known as quite small. Theres been some restoration work but its fairly poor quality. Patrizia the tour guide was fantastic and made it fairly interesting. Theres two museums at the site, as well as the ruins. Including the {alien} face, that began many of the hypotheses about who built the ruins. Only had three hours sleep, so was too tired to be impressed :) Jumped on a bus to Copacabana on Lae Titicaca when I returned. 4 hours squashed with the locals, watching the spectacular sunset across the lake and mountains. Everybody piled off the bus for a small lake crossing. Bus went on ferry, we were in boats. Tried an explosive hamburger, extra salsa on the ... read more

Wir ... read more

9/3 The bus wasnt cancelled. They changed the time but it still ran and being Bolivia as it was nearly full at 1815... they took off 15 minutes early while a family of four attempted to pile their belongings in the side and clamber on board. This was a continuiing theme throughout the entire journey. Certain groups in the country were demanding the resignation of the President but the Congress wouldnt let him, so there were road blocks throughout the country and some buses were unable to make it throught to destinations. I was travelling next to a very jolly local and woke up on the side of a mountain in a huge lines of buses and trucks with police patrolling everywhere. The bus took off again without half its passengers and they sprinted down the ... read more

8/3 Sleepy bus ride with Daniel from Rio to Sao Paulo. Greater Sao Paulo has a population of 17 million, by the way. Made it to the city at 4 and the plane left at 5.45. Slight panic attack but arrived at the airport with an hour to spare and there was nobody else checking in and nobody at customs, so it was easy after all. Plane was filled with people heading to Mexico, felt so tired I considered taking a flight straight to La Paz but decided to try for the bus overnight. Not only did I arrive too late but because the president wants to resign there are demostrations and some of the buses arent running and roads are blocked. Checked into a hotel instead, grabbed a beer with a local and chilled out ... read more

to break up the monotony of my 3 week binge in santa cruz, we took a trip up to villa paraiso (jason´s site) and urubichá, a volunteer named gerid´s site. our trip to villa paraiso was relatively uneventful. it was hot, dusty and quiet. his project partner seemed to me a bit cold and demanding; in all it didn´t seem like a place i would want to spend 2 years as a peace corps volunteer. that explains why jason spends lots of time out of his site: it is not cool. later we got a ride in the peace corps land cruiser (much nicer than the shitty ford explorers we had in peace corps DR) up to the edge of the amazon jungle in a town called urubichá. this is a very quaint medio-campo town of ... read more
