The summit ridge on Cabeza del Condor
a welcoming committee greets us before passing out face down in our tents
homeward bound and ready to take off these damn crampons
our fearless guide Julio and another unnamed beast in the distance
happy and exhausted on top in the realm of the clouds
topping out on the airy summit
climbing into the clouds...and feeling the burn at this point
starting up the 65-70 degree face
dual axe swinging fun
on day 3 we made a new summit attempt on Pequeño Alpamayo. here we downclimb neighboring Tarija to access the foot of the peak
17,750 foot Pequeño Alpamayo - a shark´s tooth waits for the first direct ascent via the south face
happy to off the knife ridge and back in the safety of the saddle. the left wing of the condor towers behind
tiptoeing carefully while climbing into the sky
Jonathan charges upward while the others wait below on the narrow saddle
what still lay ahead on the 18,000 foot summit ridge
topping out the steepest section of the gully to gain the summit ridge
starting up the 60 degree access gully
first light reveals la cabeza, or head of the condor. we ascended a steep hidden gully to the right of the ridge
morning light shows the way as we ascend the uppermost glacier
plodding through the darkness, an access couloir helps us surmount the first massive headwall
