Our travel to Mendoza went well. The planes were on time and we had no issues. We have checked into our hotel that is in smaller town south of the main city, Chacras de Coria. We are within walking distance of several wineries and many restaurants. Walked to get our dinner tonight. Pedro met some new friends along the way. We stopped a few places along the way as well. The pet store was selling dog food by the pound that could be scooped right from the bag. The bakery looked like a place we will have to go back to get some snacks one of the days we are here. We opted for the ice cream shop tonight. The hotel is very nice. It is very traditional brick with courtyard area.... read more

October was rough. This month has been a grand convergence of all things unpleasant including cultural confusion, dysforia, and a wolf in sheeps' clothing who pretended to be Prince Charming. I got home sick around the 2 1/2 months mark of studying abroad. Therefore perhaps this was a normal 2 month slump for me? This time it was wayyyy worse. The first time, I experienced a 2 week period when I was mentally tired, could no longer understand Spanish, and the excitement and colors all around me seemed to fade. I came crashing down off my travel high and I would have given ANYTHING for a Chipotle burrito. Anything! It was melodramatic at best. This time, I sank into a light depression. I was homesick. I missed my car. I missed my bedroom. I missed not ... read more

Mendoza is an attractive enough Argentinian city on its own, but most make a stop there because of its proximity to the mountain crossing to Chile or to visit wineries in the nearby valleys. But on my budget, I felt trapped there, since most excursions required going on expensive guided tours, even the most basic of which cost 90 USD a day. This would feel inevitable in countries like the US and Australia, but it's difficult to pay that much somewhere where it is $10 for a dorm bed, $5 for an acceptable bottle of wine, and $3 for all the groceries I need for dinner. So instead I booked four nights at my hostel and got a free bike rental in Maipú (pronounced My-poo, making for endless puns, considering how ugly it was), which is ... read more

After celebrating Passover dinner – "liel haseder" in Bariloche, I took once again a comfortable argentine bus to the city of Mendoza – which is down to the Andes Mountains and its famous vineyards (the biggest in Latin America) enjoys water from the Andes for irrigation. The ride took 17 hours and it was long – especially because I couldn’t eat almost anything from the service that was included in the bus ticket because of Passover. After the holiday dinner and for the whole week of Passover, Jewish people are supposed to avoid any flour made food, especially bread, pasta and so. Instead, there is special bread which has not risen - It’s a very thin bread call "matza". In the pictures you can see what my breakfast at the hostel in Mendoza was made of ... read more

Letztes Wochenende habe ich einen Ausflug über die Anden nach Mendoza gemacht. Die Stadt war recht übersichtlich aber auf jeden Fall sehenswert, und auch die Berglandschaften in den Anden waren ziemlich schön.... read more

Getting to Mendoza should not have been as trying as it was. Julie and I made plans to take the 11:30pm bus out of Cordoba putting us into Mendoza at 9:30am the following day. We went to the bus terminal and bought tickets. Julie took over (she speaks fluent Spanish) at the ticket counter and apparently the agent said to get on an Andesmar Company bus even though we purchased tickets from MercedSur Bus company. Makes perfect sense, right? This was a slight detail that slipped her mind when 11:45pm arrived and I was still looking for a MercedSur bus wondering where our ride was at. Needless to say we missed our bus. Fortunately we were able to exchange our tickets for the next ride out of town at 6:30am. With seven hours to kill it ... read more

Our journey to Chile was a long one, from Ecuador via Panamá, but as we looked down on snow-capped mountains from the plane, excitement for the next leg of our trip was growing! We arrived at our AIrBnB apartment in Santiago, a fantastic find with a 17thfloor balcony with views to match and lovely landlady ready to greet us. Unfortunately the next day wasn’t my best as I started it lying next to the toilet and later vomiting into a carrier bag outside a Chinese restaurant! Ah well, Tom went to explore and later gave me a guided tour of the main sights when I was feeling a little better! Our first impression was that it felt a lot more modern and Westernised, and a lot less hectic, than Ecuador. Santiago’s Plaza de Armas was a ... read more

After another enormous breakfast, seriously, we were picked up at the hotel by our Ampora escort for the day, Sabrina. Sabrina is a literature teacher, although she is currently working full time as a tour guide for Ampora. She's also a licensed Sommelier, and very passionate about wine. I do believe that we have to credit her company for how extra special our tour was. Once more, she spoke perfect English and had lived in the United States. I liked her immensely. Uco Valley is a more recent addition to the wine production areas in Mendoza. From the story we were given, Mendoza was an area of high wine production for a very long time, but mostly table wines that were consumed in large quantities locally. It wasn't until some of the wineries decided to enter ... read more

On our second day in Mendoza, Saturday, we started early with a heavy breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Much to my delight, their buffet had what I call Happy Hour food. That is, delicious bread, cold cuts, and cheeses. I always end up eating more than I should at these type breakfast bars. Our wine tour guide from Ampora Wine Tours was picking us up at 10 minutes to 9, to take us to our first winery in Lujan de Cuyo Valley. This valley has some of the oldest, most established and classic wineries. In this instance our Ampora Tour guide Floreana (Flor) showed up punctually to pick us up in a very comfortable van. Flor was a pretty young English teacher, who enjoys wine and working for Ampora on the weekends. She appeared to be ... read more
