Yesterday was the first game Argentina played in the World Cup, againts the Ivory Coast, which they won 2 to 1. It was fun to watch. The whole country literally stopped moving for the 90 minutes of game time. I was at an Argentine friends house from the Rotaract club I attend for a bbq before the game. All the food was great, and they made me try all the cuts of meat and the different "special" meats they prepared . . .like the liver and intestines. I tried everything to be a good sport, but I pretty much stuck to the traditional meat. By the time the game started I was so full of beef and wine by the time the game started that I could barely stay awake! I just got back from watching ... read more

Although Dany Mandlebaum delivered a camera to me on June 4th 2006, sent along with peanut butter, pictures and jasmine tea from home, it could not possibly capture Sunday afternoon, no matter how many mega-pixels. After a brisk fall stroll from home to Belgrano's (our neighborhood’s) main plaza, we visited the afternoon fair. Artists stood smiling behind their creations, toques, painted rocks, incense sticks, wooden carvings, leather belts, glass masterpieces, etc. Children ran around like wild geese laughing at the street performers tricks, chasing filthy pigeons with grand determination and grabbing on to people's legs, terrified to realize it wasn't the leg of their dad when their eyes glanced upwards. Old women and men holding hands on benches watching the world wander by, young couples kissing on the museum's steps with confidence and passion, best of ... read more

Buenos Aires is such a vast city that we decided to do it twice! (it was nothing to do with the cheap flights back to the UK), its an amazing city and I am sure in our time there we only touched the surface.... Buenos Aires - Take 1 We arrived at The Chill House hostel in Palermo at 7am in the morning, there were a lot of people up already and we thought 'Wow what a bunch of early risers' - it turned out that they had not gone to bed yet! We took breakfast in a sweet oldy worldy cafe nearby to watch England beat whoever their were playing in one of their first World Cup matches - yippee! Our first day was spent walking from Palermo, a stunning area very similar to Soho ... read more

There is this interesting phenomenon in Buenos Aires, and I will imagine throughout Argentina (though Buenos Aires and Argentina are as different as Atlanta and Georgia) that men are always in the spotlight and women seem to creep behind the scenes. In all of the high profile activities and cultural treasures of the Porteño community, women appear to be largely excluded from the public eye. Let me expound. Tango. The guidebook´s classic synonym for Buenos Aires. Despite it´s commercialization for the tourist industry, there is still an alive, underground thread of tango that plays music in small cafés for locals or dances in little rooms kept hidden as best possible from the tourist eye. Tango, the public display of a private intercourse (lyrics on love, lust, loss... all private interactions but sung to a public audience) ... read more

Evita. Gardel. Maradona. The big three. No one in Argentina can deny these individuals the position on the golden pedestal society has placed them on. They aren’t just people, these are icons. Mention Eva Peron to a Peronist who heard her speak and his eyes fill with tears. Her following was so great, so cult like, that upon her death she was mummified, preserving her image for all of eternity, and was sought after by psychotic followers turned lovers. Even today in the streets of Buenos Aires graffiti makes claim to Evita’s immortality: “Evita Lives!” and followers make diligent visits to her grave in Recoleta Cemetery. Her political predecessors make use of her image, addressing crowds carrying flags boasting her image with chesty claims of “Companeros! Companeras!” Love her as a Peronist, or hate her as ... read more

Sorry for the long break from blogging, but I'm back and plan to post more often. I just finished my first trimester of school last week, so I have been busy studying for finals, taking them, and then recuperating from them. I don't know my grades yet, but at least 2 of the three went well . . . we'll see. Hmmm, before finals my friend Paul came to visit from Washington. He worked with me at CRA. While here he stayed with mutual friends Martin (who's Argentine) and his girlfriend Erin (who's not). Paul, Martin, and I all worked together at CRA in D.C. and Paul and Erin went to college together. Anyway, we were a happy bunch and I think Paul had a pretty good time experiencing this Buenos Aires freedom. I'm posting some ... read more

So arrival back to BA from Iguazu went smooth...even were able to get on an earlier flight! That was great cuz it gave us more time to get back into town and really enjoy our last night. Did a bit more shopping then dinner accompanied with some lovely Argentine wine...ahhh. Our hotel room was fabulous. They had given away all their 'small and cozy' rooms so (darn) we had to be upgraded to one of their larger suites with large windows and balcony looking out toward the city (double darn!). I love Buenos Aires! It's such a lively town, reminds me very much of a really great European city. I would love to come back again! Afternoon flight leaving BA allowed us to relax getting back to the airport. And when the checkin counters opened they ... read more
