We had a fantastic lunch today at a place called Cumana. It sits alongside two other similarly sized restaurants, but this one had a queue outside whilst the others were fairly empty. Why? Well, they are famed for their empañadas & there is about 20 varieties on the menu for only a couple of pesos each. We can vouch for the roquefort ones, delicious. Oh, they also have paper tablecloths & crayons! After lunch, we visited the Museo de Arte Decorativo. It is an incredible mansion built for a very rich family from 1911-1917 in an 18th century french castle style. Their affluence can be attested to by the fact that the dimensions of the main room were designed to fit 3 huge tapestries previously obtained. Rodin designed the proposed fireplace but the first world war ... read more

Prior to moving to Argentina I had spent roughly 45minutes studying the Spanish language. I spent half an hour learning different words from Abbey on the car trip back from San Diego and fifteen minutes learning how to say “Who do you think you are talking to!” at the school I worked at in San Diego. This last phrase often came in handy when I would get one of the Spanish speaking students at school in trouble and they would respond by saying something snotty in Spanish which they knew I didn’t understand. I would just throw my patented phrase out there in order to keep them guessing. Unfortuantly though “who do you think you are talking to” is not a phrase which can be used when you are asking for directions, ordering a hamburger, or ... read more

Heya everyone, firstly I´m glad to see that people are putting some comments on my blog. I appreciate them, and will accept all, unless they are plain abusive. I value everyone´s opinon because every opinon in this world is equally important, and is fact somone´s truth, and to that person it is valid, as my opinon is to me. ok, well on the weekend, I decided to do some sightseeing, as my time appears to rapidly running out in BA. On Saturday I went to the old dockside worker town of La boca. This is trully a colourful place, with lots of tourists. I latter found out that the colour comes from Italin families painting there houses with left over ship paint. It was a nice somthing to do for the day anyway. Also much to ... read more

I have to be honest. This thing I am doing is hard. But hard isnt the right word. It is more than hard. It is difficult painful lonely painstaking ruthless desperate frustrating .... and heartbreaking There have been other difficulties too. Mainly that I love Buenos Aires. Today I rode the subway up to Villa Crespo for my first Spanish class. My face was drawn and I looked at people accompanied with someone else. I envied every single couple of friends or lovers because they had something that I didn´t...a coupledom. Oh how lonely lonely lonely my heart was crying! How much I wanted to give up today. How I wanted to fly home and gorge myself on blackberries and get my feet so dirty I couldnt reconize them. But there is this problem. I am ... read more

We started off our day nicely, you guessed it shopping!!! Then headed up the river delta to Tigre. After a mission getting the two trains so we could go the scenic route - we could have taken the easy option of one train but that would have been to easy, and no nice view. We arrived at an amusement park on the river. It is quite a touristy town, but we are tourist after all. We got a boat ride through the delta, quite beautiful, however we all had had coffee (kate had had 3 unfortunately) and got a little hyperactive. It is a pretty amazing place, people do actually live on the islands and the area is mainly used for paper milling?. Then headed to the frutos (fruit) markets which are not really fruit markets ... read more

Well i´ve been promising people back home that i´d make a blog of what my new home is like so here it is. I´m living in a rich surburb of BA called Recoleta, think double bay for sydney. It´s a very different life to what I´m used to. We have 2 maids here, and I think that the lady that owns the place, is from a very very wealthy family. People on the streets, dress really really nice, lots of little old lady´s with fur coats to boot. The stores around here are all brand name´s, and the restraunts are top quality. Anyhow yesterday (thursday) after I finished school, I decided that I´d go out on a photo shoot, and this turned out to be very interesting. I walked around taking photo´s of the streets and ... read more

Oink oink piggy piggy. Moo moo cow cow....but what sound does a chinchilla make? Last Saturday I got up early and stepped outside donning a rediculously large pair of sunglasses, a touch of makeup, and a winter coat. Where was I going? La Rural of course...it was the last weekend of the country fair. I like talkin "animal" and so I thought what better way to spend a day then conversing with some wooly sheep in coats, long horned bulls and of course a fuzzy little llama. The country fair was in many ways just like any country fair in The States. There were cowboys or gauchos as they are called here. There was a radio station broadcasting, horse shows, big trucks, corrals for sale, even Toyota truck exhibits. The chickens clucked like they are suppose ... read more

Unfortunately for myself and Gareth our travelling experience was soon to change due to the arrival of Dumb and Dumber a.k.a Bim and Ollie. I was awoken by two very familiar voices and a 'Christian Burial' bundle at about 11 am which was very early for us considering we were now nocturnal creatures that come out and drink at night and sleep during the day. After being dragged out of bed by Bim and Ollie it wasn't long before we were showing them the main attractions of Buenos Aires - "Here's Mint night club, over there is Opera Bay club and here's Roxies bar........" The next few days were spent dinning in steak restaurants and drinking in posh clubs such as Opera Bay. This place was amazing!!! By far the best club i've been to, check ... read more

Oh man, I have been bad bad bad....I started going on excersions to different parts of the city a couple of weeks ago, the first was to Boedo. I have been maintaining these excursions but haven´t been writing about them...so we are going to play a little game of "catch up". Let´s flip back some pages in my journal to.... 07.10.06 Yesterday was Independence Day here in Argentina. There were no fireworks, no hot dogs (except for the street vendors who sell them everyday), no cheap beer, no lush green grass, and CERTAINLY no red, white, and blue desserts with cool whip. The shocking thing about Independence Day was that there wasnt really anything to it. I asked my students today what you do traditionaly on I.D. and they said that it is more of a ... read more
